Latest Peugeot-Tat purchase

Picked up this fantastically shabby machine last night. It's a 2002 HDI 90 ... has been in a bump and the bonnet has been replaced but not resprayed (no big deal) but the real killer is the airbags have deployed meaning the dash at the passenger side is ripped to shreds.

It's a shame actually as despite its knackered looks its otherwise a solid car - I bought it as I've moved down to Edinburgh to take up a new job and need a mingebag diesel to run me back up and down to Aberdeen to see the missus who is still there for the moment.

Its on 135k and drives flawlessly, warm heater , decent stereo and 45 plus MPG with MOT til september and tax til May. The killer of course is that the new MOT rules mean the airbags having deployed is now a failure which will most likely be its death warrant despite still being a decent useable vehicle - What is involved in changing the dash in one of these?

Either way, i paid £350 for it, knowing I'll get £200 off Henry Grays scrappy in September worst case scenario, and it's saving me a fortune meantime.

Oh and.. will this run on veg?

HDi won't like veg oil. Can you remove the airbag bulb/s for MOT or will they need to see them lit up when they turn the ignition on?

now you're down here you can come and give me a hand replacing the brakes on the subaru - :D

Paint the bootlid white for that Provincial-Hackney-Carriage look.

This may be complete bollocks, but I'm sure I read somewhere that with a bit of jiggery pokery you can wire a permanently light airbag warning light [or indeed any other ignition fed light] to come on with the ignition, but go out when you start the car.............not that I would ever condone such behaviour

You could wire it in series with the oil pressure light.

That'll be a pound please.

That looks like a great buy.

I would suggest doing what I am intending to do with the 306 and put a resistor in place of the airbag (mines not gone off but i've replaced an airbag drivers seat with a non-airbag one).

406's are great cars to drive but I bet it's a wee bit sluggish with 90bhp.

Airbag ECU from a scrappy or ebay, easily changed. Resistor across the passenger airbag terminals. In fact maybe just turning it off (the baby seat in the front kill switch).

from 01.01.12 any warning lights being on are an advisory, from April warning lights on are a big fat fail. ie if the engine managment light is on it'll be MOT failureage.

I know not at the mo about air bag lights being on as as a £12.50 Anglia, a 1971 A60 and a £150 405 diseasal have no such accoutriments.

Hammer some duck tape over the dashboard.

Does the light absolutely have to come on nowadays? I'd blank it off with sommat if not. Failing that wiring it off the oil light sounds like a plan.

Scrappy for a white boot lid = GR9 for taxi £££s.

Drivers airbag looks an easy enough change. I'd have a stab at changing the dash top if it was do able without landing myself in a shedload of strife.. anyone got any idea how you go about it?? Then i could just switch the passenger airbag off and as it would be hidden under the new dash the tester would be none the wiser

Phase 2 406 passenger airbags are unfortunately built into the dash, whereas phase 1's have them as an un-boltable unit
