Lankytim Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Hi gang, I've been asked to sell/break/liquidate/dispose of my bosses 1998 Saab 95. Its a petrol turbo automatic, 120k on the clock, FSH, leather interior and great condition. The only problem is the heater fan is broken, which I'm told is a common fault. There's short MOT and tax on it but I' have no idea what it's worth. Are they good breakers? I'm tempted to cruise it about myself. Of course I could just frag it.... Its the spit of this one,
cort16 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 They make shit money, which is odd because they're pretty good cars and rapid in Full Pressure turbo mode. Can you get SAAB parts now they'd de-funct? If not maybe better to break it.
ashmicro Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Saab-9-5-98-0 ... 43ac3f8c8f Can't see parts being a big problem in the short to medium term. If you like it offer him a few quid and a meat pie, that's my advice.
tonedepear Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Parts readily available from GSF/Euro. I think they're fab, only real issue they have is a sluge thing with engine oil. Lots more info here: http://www.uksaabs.eu/UKS/index.php or here http://www.saabscene.com/forum/threads/142582-SLUDGE!.
Shep Shepherd Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 A good friend of mine has owned a 9-5 "Arc" 2.0t estate for a couple of years which he bought off his father after his 9-3 was written off. Although some of its detailing is pretty poor (such as the distressingly artificial 'wooden' dash), I really like it and would consider owning one myself if no V70s were available, although I'd drop the sump and clean both it and the oil strainer before I started to use it in anger. I made sure that he got a garage to do so, as the car hadn't had an oil change for quite some time before he bought it, although it did have the modified breather kit fitted at some point. So far, so good
254575 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 user 'mateincoat' on here has a 9-5 estate. armrest is annoying.cup holder is cool. that is all
dollywobbler Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 A fairly dismal car in my experience, but hard to turn down if cheap enough. They do the job, just not anywhere near as well as its competitors. Auto box is pretty annoying in these. Five speed IIRC and it gets confused about which one to use if you nail it. Mind you, drove some pretty big distances in it and always felt comfortable when I clambered out.
gadgetgricey Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Hi there Tim, Join UKSaabs and make friends with "Saabnoob", stage 1 remap on the ECU will cost about £60 and make it seem like a totally different car. Only main issues are the sump and the breather pipes as mentioned above. Nice car, pm me if you want to sell it on. (already bought one Saab off you) Take care - Dave -
peter9000uk Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I got £650 for my v plate 2.0 auto with a lot less miles on it than that one if that helps you price it. Mine had loads of history and I did the breather mod sump drop. It took an age to sell as well. Shame is was a lovely smoke if a little thirsty
Guest Tony Hayers Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Can you get SAAB parts now they'd de-funct? If not maybe better to break it. I am told the parts side of the company is apart from the car making division of the company (like Scania) and it won't be affected.
Lankytim Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 My Boss needs to transfer the plate off the Saab on to his new Merc convertible, so he won't be getting rid for a little while. The MOT and tax run out in February so he'd better hurry up! With the busted heater motor I don't think its worth any more than scrap value. I CBA tarting it up to sell if they are worth the square root of FA. Boss said he'd give it to me FOC but would like to go halves on any profit I make should I sell it, which may be not much at all! It would probably make more sense to just cut the CAT off, drag it round to the scrappies, weigh it in and give him half of the proceeds! The money could go towards fixing up a certain Maxi in my garage... Its all a bit of a shame, really. 1 company director owner fron new, too!

Offer him 200 quid and drive it yourself. When it breaks badly or flops the test, sell bits on Ebay before checking it's weight on the local scales. No point in binning it before it actually goes wrong. You'll probably find it's a very nice thing to smoke around in.

Try getting something like a new key for a saab then you will see how easy it is to get dealer only non stock parts! I'd have a look on ebay and see how they break and frag the rest,if all of it.
Lankytim Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 Just been looking up "how to" guides on replacing the heater motor. It doesn't look too difficult to do at all.
Shep Shepherd Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Just been looking up "how to" guides on replacing the heater motor. It doesn't look too difficult to do at all. Do it! It sounds far too good to frag.
tonedepear Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I love saabs, 9-5s were better than 9-3s of their era, they're a pretty shape, and now the company have gone to the wall surely that enhances their shite credentials? What's not to like?
marcello-gandini Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 That's a good thing about owning a SAAB, there are lots of how to guides online. They've helped me through a few jobs on my mum's 9000.Parts backup for older, not new/nearly new SAABs isn't an issue at all, specialist companies like PartsForSAAB have everything a dealer could offer.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I would hold fire and see what the oracle/Felly Magic has to say before spending any money or doing anything, you might end up buying a car without a warranty or something which would be a fucking DISASTER!!!!11!!
Rocket88 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 That engine in your Maxi would be interesting................
Lankytim Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 I think it would go very well indeed, but more likely i'd end up with 2x weigh ins with no engines at all and a big hole in my bank account!

I almost LOL'd at that comment Trouble at mill?
AnthonyG Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I'd give a it a drive, and if you like it, give your boss £200 and smoke around in it until something big goes wrong, re the . It'll be nice and safe, which I remember you were worried about when doing motorway trips in that Mk4 Escort!(that was you that owned it, wasn't it? - the red 'SCROTE' off RR)
Lankytim Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Frigging hell, you remember that? Nice car that was, an ex copper I was talking to told me how they cut the top off peoples heads on frontal accidents, which put me off it a bit.
the02shed Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 As an indication of their value and sought-afterness (not their ability), I bought one of these that was traded in at work in November. '01 on an 'X' 9-5 2.3t auto saloon in black with leather, full Saab history, one owner, 53k from new. Bit biffed at the corners, but presentable enough, drove lovely, everything worked. MOT till July, taxed end of December. How much? £100. And I had to be persuaded, they really wanted rid-the key tag said 'Shit Saab' on it. I was going to weigh it in for an instant profit, instead a Saab-aholic mate took it for £150.So possibly worthy, certainly worthless.
Volksy Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 For that reason above, I'm certainly considering one when my commute becomes shorter.
Lankytim Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Thanks for all the info guys. Looks like these are pretty undesirable! We really don't need another car and its starting to look like these are worth more dead than alive. What a quandry! Should I really just have it crushed? I recon if I removed the CAT and pressed the rest then i'd get £200 + back. I could also drain all the yummy fuel out of it and stick in in my Volvo, I think the wheels may fit the 240 with wobble bolts (or whatever they call them) I could even stick the front seats in the Maxi, they're the right colour!
Cavcraft Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Pretty sure the engines out of these can be 'persuaded' into Vectras and Astras. Might be worth lobbing it up for sale on Retro-Rides as well as a Vauxhall forum.
