Rover running problem, HELP!!!!!

Bol I believe that 90s chod is most at risk from electronic ignition or fueling problems.

I have had two mint 900 series volvos die on me one totally and one with a crankcase sensor....in both circumstances the fault codes told me there was a fault but didnt specify where.

What resulted in both circumstances was a lot of cash spent on replacing electrical compinents with eithet good used or brand new. First car had your symptoms...replaced crank case sensor, coil, leads, dizzy cap, rotor before tracing the issue to a poor earth on the ignition module plate....after 300 quid plus...

Second one died completely.500 quid in parts, loads of time spent eventually sold this 960 saloon to a vicar who took a month to trace the fault to a faulty injector connection.

Problem is that most 90s survivors are mechanically pretty robust but the electronics are now 20 years plus and are starting to fail. U believe that most cars of thus period that end up scrapped will be due to such problems.

I have noticed the wiring on the BX is getting hard and brittle...difficult to work on now.

One of the reasons why I moved from volvos to psa tat is the cost of these components which in volvos can be expensive.

Bol, you need an oscilloscope. Cuts out all the guesswork when you can look at the waveform a sensor is producing, or the output from the ECU to the injectors (for example). It's pretty much essential kit if you want to work on modern stuff, It's like the difference between night and day compared to only having a multimeter. Even better for the shiter, old style CRT scopes can be had on eBay for as little as £20, I actually got a working dual channel 20mhz scope on freecycle a few weeks ago.

Ah! SCO - THAT's what that ruddy great CRT was doing on your wife's didning room table!...bet she just loves it when you wire up a grubby ecu on her linen table cloth!

Just been reading your thread on RR, a lot of it over my head but fascinating stuff none the less. The old replace stuff until it is fixed approach, even by some dealers, appears to be completely unneccessary. I really fancy giving it a go.

I have the most bizarre picture in my mind.

Anyone who said 'crank sensor', give yourself a pat on the back. The clip that holds the crank sensor wires had been dislodged (by me while changing the starter motor :oops: ) allowing them to drop down and rub on the driveshaft. The engine would start and run OK, but as soon as the driveshaft started turning the ECU must have been getting some very strange signals back hence the nonsense and ultimate arrival home on the back of a lorry.

All fixed now!

I was all ready to accept the loss of the Rover and start using that old Xsara, but looks like the Rover will live on. Great!!!! Ms_Bol reckons I looked like a child who'd accidentally dropped his favourite toy in the duck pond at the park. "We'll get you another toy' 'I DONT WANT ANOTHER TOY I WANT MINE'

Tell you wht though has anybody clocked this one? It looks like a TOTAL HONEY.

^^^ YUM!! That 220SLi looks TASTY. Never seen a later one properly with full leather seats, they look very similar to the later 800s leather.

Congrats on getting your 220 back on the road.

Glad to see its all sorted and will live to die another day. Crank sensors seem to baffle many mechanics. I bought my 240 ultra cheap as it wouldn't run. The previous owner had had the AA out to it several times and had replaced the entire ignition system bit by bit on the advice of the AA. Eventually they gave up and put it up for sale. I bought it, had it Shiply'd home, wazzed on a used crank sensor (donated FREE by a banger racer) and I was back in business! 10 min free fix. VERY satisfying!
