Not brilliant quality. 1981 Antrobus Grasstrack / Banger meeting. For the spotters.

Absolutely WONDERFUL!! There's actually a Mk 1 Cortina in the 1st shot that looks like it's about to come to a sticky end- bet whoever had it wishes they'd kept it now!! Makes you wonder what's being smashed up now that will be regretted in 20 years' time!

Excellent pics - just like the 'Memory Lane' section in PC.I-spy an Avenger GLS in the background of the 1st pic with that odd part-vynl roof.A Saab 96 also seems a strange choice for a Grass car, is it not, being fwd?

Some more. Apologies, the quality is getting worse.

I love this sort of thing, in a 2008 context it's quite difficult at first glance to separate the racers from the spectators' cars in these photos! Some of the bangerstox wouldn't have been all that old either, 6-7 years?

The oldest Mk3 Cortina or HC Viva would have been 11 years old in 1981, the oldest Escort a couple of years older. I can remember going to the stock cars in 1982 and most of the saloons were Mk2 Escorts that would be no more than 7 years old. The newest banger I saw in 1982 was a straight FIAT 128 that was still wearing its 1977/78 S plates.

OK last one. I'm including this because I can't identify the black and gold Coupe. Is it an Opel?

Amazing how little foreign stuff was on our roads back then! What's the blue saloon sitting side on to the camera in the first shot, some sort of Datsun?Could the black coupe be an Audi 100? It doesn't really look like anything I can say for definite!

Yup! That got me quite excited, it's a C110 model 240K Skyline saloon, they sold them here from 1973-1975. About 2500 came to the UK and very, very few remain.

Aussie Chrysler Valiant Charger - these were imported into the UK between 74 and 76 by Chrysler UK as a sort of range topper - along with the Valiant saloon.

I guess it would have been about 6/7 years old in 1981 but probably worth bu99er all even then - or could have been in a front end smash necessitating the Mad Max look!

And that's a white Fiat 128 "cowhipped" coupe in the foreground of the 1st picture in the second batch. Rare rare rare!I think those Aussie Chryslers were quite popular with the banger boys - makes you wonder just how many they imported. In the mid-70s Ford were importing a limited Australian and US range, as were GM (Firebird, Caprice, Blazer) and even American Motors. Makes you wonder why they are still bothering with Cadillacs today - must be faster depreciators than the Citroen C6! Still, they'll give the banger boys some fodder for 2030...

I used to go to Autocross from about 1983/4-89, small local club who ran events in Suffolk. Got a few pic's somewhere.Usually it was ex-rally/short oval Escorts, Minis etc but often there'd be strange stuff like a cut-down FD Ventora, Alfa 1750 GTV and even a Jensen Healey. I remember Civics became popular, I suppose they revved well and were competitive in pretty much bog-standard form.I really enyoyed the pic's MonzaE :D

cool pics mate..see a Viva the same as mine in the first shot..i found a Valiant Charger with a Jensen 440 in it back in Edinburgh 1987..it was in primer..sitting in a garage yard..after a lapfull of water from the glovebox being opened..they started it up..scary n awesum..they only wanted about 300squid for it...but wasnt really suitable for the Highlands..so i bought a Honda 125XL instead...regret...

Great pictures. The black car is definitely an Aussie Valiant - compare with the pictures of a complete car here:http://www.valiant.org/nz.htmlThe author doesn't say where the pics were taken - the background looks to me like Whitchurch ?
