Rover 75 For Sale - CDT Connoisseur SE Tourer - £SOLD

Right, I might as well do a proper advert for it. 2002 Rover 75 Connoisseur (no, I didn't know it had an 'o' in it either) SE CDT Tourer. That makes it pretty much top spec so you get lots of buttons, electrically heated and operated leather seats, leccy mirrors, windows etc. Has digital climate control but needs a regas if you want cold air.

Tax March, test May, 176k miles, some service history and recent bills, 49mpg (you might get 50 if you don't hoof it), 115bhp.

Problems are crunchy third gear, intermittent clutch fault and a headlight bulb is out. Oh, and the cruise control doesn't. Benefits include RESPEK from National Trust types, women actually seem to like them and I might even include a tartan rug in the sale.

Open to swaps/exchanges, but would prefer some cash and autoshite my way.

Why are you selling this so soon? I thought you were going to use it over winter?

Posted

It needs work, other cars need work, I have absolutely zero funds. Something has to give! I'm worried it'll soften me up too much as well. Got home last night and felt like I'd driven no further than the next village. It really is superb for long distance stuff.

What is the occasional clutch problem please Ian?

A few times, the pedal has failed to return. I've pulled it up with my foot and given it a pump and it's been fine (had to do this in traffic on the M6, which was fun). It's had the slave cylinder done not long ago allegedly, so I wonder if it's the master cylinder at fault. Even if it is the slave, the gearbox needs to come off anyway (reportedly not that bad a job, as you drop the front subframe completely, leaving the engine in situ) so someone with actual money could fit a replacement one at the same time. Word is that the Freelander slave cylinder is stronger AND cheaper...

Given that I'm still trying to get the BX sorted, and that the 2CV still needs welding, I don't really need another car battling for time and non-existent funds.

Isn't the clutch thing a known issue with the 75?

I'm sure a google would bring it up?

Posted

Clutch issues are not unknown. One big benefit of these cars is a HUGE following. There is a LOT of information out there. You can also get quite a few performance mods...

Posted

Oh I know all about these bad boys.

Clutch - unless all three bits have been done concurrently (slave, master and plate) they may as well have not bothered. I take it you've already bled the system?

Headlamp - an arse of a job.

But despite that it's kinda worth it and I am kinda tempted. Don't really have too much shite to swap myself (I *should* get rid of 900 or Alfasud but I just *can't*) and I doubt you want a Golf Mk4 TDI SE. So I'll have a think. And maybe a cup of tea.

/K

I haven't bled the system. I'll give that a go (if and when I get time!) but I'd rather sell with the buyer aware that there has been a problem. Any tips for bleeding it? Access seems 'interesting.'

I quite like the Mk4 Golf, but really I need to free up some funds for the Citroens.

Aye, and the Golf is registered to my missus ;-)

£850 seems fair. Time for tea :)

Bleed that clutch, mr Wobbler.

The Master cyl on the 825 is in the same hideous position as it is on the 75; on the bulkhead above the pedal box. There's also a real bastard of a nut to undo in the footwell. Unless you have all your ribs taken out and an extra-bendy spine put in I can't see how you can humanly reach it. I was dreading changing the master cyl (I had the exact same symptoms as you).

Having bought £100 of replacement cyl I decided to bleed the clutch before I stormed in with actual spanners and, sure enough, a big hiss of air escaped when the clutch was manipulated. Bleeding my clutch has returned it to "not very good" status from being inoperative. That'll do for me.

What's the bleedin' technique? I haven't actually seen where the MC is yet, nor have I worked out how to get fluid into the thing before bleeding.

If it's as per the 825, and there's no real reason why it shouldn't be, there's a bleed nipple on the underside of the slave cylinder, which is on the radiator side of the clutch itself, under the bell housing. Dead easy to get to.

Thanks Minimad! Great link, but what a stupid bloody design! Gah.

Oh and a Mk1 Fezza and a 309? Sounds awesome!

Posted

Christ! It seems I've found an aspect of the 800 I prefer over the 75!

But not for a Fray Bentos pie I see.

Oops. Sorry Billy. I genuinely didn't spot your offer! Not sure it's the escape from modernity that I'm seeking though, thanks.

Hang on, There's a forum about shaving Ted?!

Ummm, yeah. Im a bit of a shaving freak and have rather a LOT of very old razors - the oldest is 90 years old and my daily is a 45 year old adjustable. I do use straights as well when Im feeling brave.

Sha La La Lar.

Only 'cuz you want me to stop faffing about with the Fiesta

ANYWAY, good luck with the sale and keep us all updated

I was v tempted into buying one a couple of years ago - went to see a shonky Alfa 156 and the guy also had one of these. If it hadn't been for the amazingly H - E - A - V - Y clutch I would've had it. Even Mrs P thought it was good.

Hey, We've all got to have a hobby i guess!.

I nearly bought a MG ZT CDTi a few years ago, it was a lovely drive but i found the windscreen very narrow, it was a bit like looking out of a post box!

This is true, though it still feels enormous compared to the 2CV's windscreen. Would like to try a ZT just to see how different it feels.

Hmmm. I've had a '96 Leggie Wagon before. Dull but very capable, especially in snow...

What's the story with it ie spec and what not?

Posted

this one is a 2.5 quad cam auto so whilst not as hairbrained as the 2.5 turbo it is still bloody quick and certainly not boring whilst being a tiny wee bit better on the gas.

150k on the clock - wee bit of rust here and there in the usual legacy places- wheel arches, bottom of one of the C pillars etc. Plastic bumpers have seen better but only close up and a myriad of supermarket dings etc

MOT till June, Tax till Feb

Spec wise these are minimilist - stereo, aircon (works), cruise control (doesn't) but they are solid

mechanically usual scooby problem of oil dripping from rocker covers onto hot exhaust - they all do this after a while - I am going to tackle this with the famous 'washers' bodge (cos its a boxer this is quite a job)

needs new shocks at the back

not in any hurry to get rid of it - very reliable if needing some tlc (thats te polite way of putting it!) :D

I should really spend more time working on it but the Mrs is using it all the time

I could still do with moving this one on. Does have a few issues, but you rarely see diesel tourers this cheap and there are plenty of breakers out there!

Posted

Why don't you keep it for the winter, you'll just end up with another car that you are unsure about its history/reliability or are you planning going to use the BX?

I would fix it. A leggy nine year old 75 diesel tourer with problems is probably only worth about £500 round here I'm afraid. (west wales).
