    Datsun Cabstar 1980

I'm now the proud* owner of this absolute heap. It's got a 2L petrol H20 engine in, the cab is mostly holes and the bed is knackered. I'm going to be fixing it over the next few months and getting it restored back to a decent standard, then building it into a proper motorhome. This one has been on Salvage Hunters once and handed about between buyers for the past few years. The current plan is to sort out the running gear and electrics. The bodywork, reupholstry etc will mostly be done in Morocco (I'm driving there to see my partners family in this...) once it's structurally sound

  2. For those of you that were following the saga of the insurance mither I had with this, great news was received yesterday! I had a court date set for around 20th of April. Yesterday I received an email from my litigation team to say the third party have agreed to pay up, which means they have given in and finally admitted fault. 2.5 years after it happened!

  3. The front numberplate and mounting bracket on the Hampshire was very bent and twisted. But it looked like it would straighten out ok. Doesn’t look too bad in this photo. You can see how bent it was here: I carefully separated the numberplate and backing plate. Dressed out the damage and blasted it: The backing plates on A70s and A90s are extra long, incorporating those ears on the sides presumably to line up with the position of the mounting brackets on the bumpers. These are not available new, so I wanted to save these as often restored cars

  5. Hi! I'm Sh'eds and this is my confession. I am old enough to have had the first of my COVID jabs, but young enough that I was surprised by the speed of invite, and for the past 25 years have been driving a variety of what might kindly be termed end of life vehicles. A friend introduced me to Autoshite some years ago but I only joined last year and have made few contributions so far; something I hope to rectify now. Current fleet comprises a '87 Corvette which hasn't been on the road since 2013 but is currently undergoing some fixerating with a view to summe

    The grumpy thread

Remember my deranged neighbour who used to keep shutting my cat inside her house? Yesterday my cat vanished again - she goes out for ten minutes at a time - after a couple of hours I knew where she'd be. So I went through the charade of walking up & down the street rattling a packet of biscuits. Eventually I knocked on next door's. 'No, I've not seen your cat for three or four days'. 'I'm sorry' I retorted, 'but I no longer believe a word you say, so any chance you could go & have another special look?' This cheery banter, as you might imagine continued for a few minutes before sh

  13. Just under an hour, but a kind offer! I have a new bolt removing set (will come in handy on the Yugo and Nova projects too) which has arrived today and a bottle of penetrating oil which will be here tomorrow. I shall give that a go and see how we get on... Today I had my own MoT in the form of a health check and dentist visit (part a passed with advisories, part b - some welding needed) and I took the Mazda. On the way back I treated it to a quick hand job with the local Eastern European chaps who normally do a great job. Wasn’t until I got home and had a proper look that

  14. Left more acid goo on a few bits that I wanted to weld onto. I think I'll use this more often as it works quite well. Welded the bulkhead repairs on. (After vacuuming out the pine needles and what looked like a bird's nest). All done Next I moved onto the headlamp washer bowl with an aim to tidying up the repair piece. With everything roughly in place I drilled and the cut the slot for the washer. Tidied up then seam welded. Final trimming and bending then welded in. All lined up ok. Test fit of the grill

  17. Update......... Haven't yet got the Laurel tax dealt with, hopefully tomorrow, but I dropped the LS400 into the garage yesterday and I've already got it back with everything sorted. They'd speculatively ordered a coil pack in on the basis of my description and that did the job. Cat joints got welded-up, and as a 'bonus' while it was up in the air they found a coolant leak that turned out to be a split hose which they replaced. Luckily it wasn't the radiator (although they aren't as expensive as I'd feared). Nice to drive the old thing again, and as I start working back in the office

    1996 Citroen AX 1.5 D

I swapped my Rover for this back in February from @colc and picked it up as I was coming back into the country from a services. It gets ridiculous MPG, has laquer peel, and a lovely new rust hole in the boot. Hauling everything we had in the Rovers boot and rear seats... It's since had new tyres and I've collected a stack of spares to put on It's also been used to live out of while being in Belgium for a stretch, it's suprisingly comfortable once you get the bed set up and windows blanked out, I stuck a fold out mattress I bought for a tenner in. Useable as a kitchen, v

  20. More work has taken place on the slightly battered drivers side wing. A few light skims were applied before more blocking. It was then hit with another coat of epoxy primer. Which was then blocked again, this time using a tin of Carmine red left over from my Astramax van for a guide coat. (Van was sold in 1999!) Once it was blocked again, it then recieved a fourth coat of primer. (Yawn) It looks pretty reasonable now, but still requires a little fettling in a couple of spots around the wheel arch.

I've just bunged in a Google search for "ford anglia silver" which by chance brought me to a previous Car&Classic ad for that exact car: https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C926540 It's "Blue Mink" which was indeed one of the limited run colours at the end of production. I'm not an Anglebox fan by any means but the colour suits it well.

  28. The car will remain a mystery until a, I believe traditional, fuel station unveiling once collected, though I will make note that Mpgees were not a consideration in this potential purchase. Also whilst I have now embarked upon 5hrs of travel this appointment is to view the car and terms of sale have not yet been agreed with the seller. However, I have insurance in place for the vehicle, have transferred sufficient funds to my current account and have already purchased a Haynes BOL for the thing so I think it is safe to assume I will be driving it home late tonight!

  30. I got this back from the MOT station yesterday and did a quick oil change. While doing this I took the tyre with the puncture back to National to let them have another go at repairing it, which they seem to have made a better job of this time. While there I got them to do the tracking on the van after I'd fitted a track rod to it, it's driving straight again which is always good. I also had to do the Ibizas tracking after changing a track rod on it too. This was achieved by adjusting it, driving it, adjusting it again til it felt right. I've got it pretty good now, as my 20 mile moto

  33. The bulkhead looked pretty nasty but all in there's not much work involved. I attacked it with the big wire wheel to try and find the worst bits. Surprisingly it doesn't go much further than the ginger. I started chopping out the worst, to find a nice surprise waiting. I cut out a bit more good metal just so I can get a hoover nozzle in there! The rest is similar. The scuttle design is a bit of a weak point in these cars. I cleaned as much orange away as possible. Then hydrate 80. Made some repair pieces, wi

It's occurred to me that Mr Crackers is considerably more youthful than the majority on here, but has both the intelligence and enthusiasm to embrace not only the most advanced car of the 1960s (P6) but is also aware of a colloquism of that decade, i.e. Anglebox. Not heard that term for years, thank you.

  37. Status update: Over half way home. Issues found so far: 1. Cd player not working. Luckily I brought some tapes with me too. 2. Central door locking appears not to work on key, may just be a knack to it. 3. Driver's door doesn't open from inside. Do have spare part in boot. Hopefully an easy fix. 4. Tracking / ball joints/ tierods need moderately* urgent attention. Having the steering wheel bucking like a hose with a wasp nest up its arse at 50mph is mildly* invigorating.

Just a small update, I was scanning around for bargains to complete this and eventually found 8x4 OSB sheet to go up and then subsequently a garage roof that had recently been removed so all in I'm about £230 into it which will go up a smidge due to guttering ,strip light and outdoor socket. Always a fan of the tiny wheel flatbed It snowed heavily whilst I slapped on the preservative but I persevered due to just wanting it done! The osb flew up no bother and similarly the underlay and steel was no issue to shorten a smidge and the stiffness of the metal made it feel very f
