All this guff about the "new" Transit van, lets remember the old one I say. So, a topic showing only old Transit shite pictures please.

This is (obv) a pretty hopeless shot of my old Transit recovery truck. The chassis was shagged and the truck filled two pages of failure sheets at the MOT. Still, it did me proud for a few months and saw a very handsome return when I flogged it on eBay.

I like the old transits, anything from a mk5 smiley or older are the best ones.

My old V reg 190 lwb semi high top smiley. A very good van and that old 2.5DI is a fantastic engine! Far better than the dmf crap in the last two transits! This one was in really good shape aswell, only the bottom of the rear doors had started to blister, no other rust anywhere. Sold it last year to a builder and its still about and looking pretty good.

This is my current transit. B reg mk2 100L lwb high top. Its an ex BBC broadcasting van. It is probably one of the most original left by now, having never had any welding and its only done just under 19K from new!! Powered by the superp commercial spec 2.0 pinto! Currently being converted into a camper.

This link shows how my van would have looked when in BBC use. About half way down the page and shows some of the equiptment that was fitted to the back of them.

http://www.btinternet.com/~roger.beckwi ... ad/lr5.htm

I also had an N reg 120 swb smiley that was also a great van.

And a company 52 reg mk6 lwb high top, which was ok but nowhere near as reliable as the old ones.

Here's another of the few that I had. This, iirc, was the only one that had a noisy diff.

Here's another that I applied several doses of COUNCIL ESTATE CUSTOMISING to.

TransitwithstickersSept09004a.jpg

This one was a fugging nightmare when I got it, including deciding to do 25mph flat out on the M56 on the way home before conking out at a set of lights near Helsby. I spent the hour we waited for the RAC removing some of the stupid stickers on it. The injectors needed bleeding and along with a new genuine fuel filter it ran like a dream after that.

That red one's supurb :D

I googled rusty transit and was very pleased to find a pic of one of my old ones high up in the image listings. Did many happy miles in this all over the country usually on a 50/50 mix of veg and derv if I was flush or any old oil if times were hard. The pic's after some treatment, it later got a pair of rear windows from a ldv and a roller applied mix of paint I had lying about. Ended up milka bar purple :) Sold it with looming LEZ and rusty chassis rails as a engine donor for a local scrap mans van, the body went over the bridge full of tut and the engine died through lack of oil a few months later. Sorry shame, it was our only vehicle for a good few years until the family expanded to 4.

I'll dig out a pic I have of my mates one on it's last visit to the weighbridge.

LEZ killed off all our DI'S around here

Some epic Transits here fellas...thanks...keep 'em coming eh.

As promised here's my mates one getting it. He worked it for a few years keeping it going on a shoe string travelling near and far until late last year with it's non compliance on the horizon it made no sense to get it through test again so we filled it up and run it in.

My van on the street was picked up on a rope behind my mates one. Goes around comes around hey.

Wanted that tinted front screen but ultimately couldn't be arsed to take it out

autosleeper mk2 with 2.0 pinto and stupid autobox. pretty rotten.

I also had a 1994 2.5di which was a great van. those engines were low on power but unkillable (unless it had a lucas pump and you put veg in it like me)

My 65 pickup arriving in the Uk a couple of years back. it had to travel backwards on the trailer as the rear (5 stud) axle was much narrower than the front (6 stud)! made for interesting towing...

1965?

Have you got a thread about it anywhere please Nigel?

Posted

No, sorry. I dont tend to do threads.

In brief, I found it in mid France, running on 2 cylinders, MOT exempt -and had been for well over 15 years. In a truly disgraceful state, it was used by an old boy for collecting wood from the forest- but it was all getting too much for him.

Paperwork all confirmed it to have been registered in Sept 65 -one of the very first German ones.

Once home I discovered it to be 6 volt -despite everyone telling me such a vehicle didnt exist. I had 2 Bods from Ford visit - and helpfully agreed to rebuid the starter motor, gratis, to 12 volt. All they asked for were 'first dibs' -asd & when.

Neither Bosch nor Ford recgonised any of the references on it -but they rebuilt it quickly using a combination of US & german components. Front axle swopped to more appropriate 5 studs -but retaining discs, and welding 60% completed. It woould prob MOT -if I needed it UK legal.

So its now a tatty reliable 12volt buiders truck- dry stored. It has been out a few times- but I get pikeys swarming every time it sees daylight.

Posted

Class, if you do happen to take any more pictures please post them up. I didn't even know they made them that early either, for some reason I thought they came in about 1967/8.

Posted

First build 65, on sale late 65/Early 66.... The legend is the same age as me, but I reckon I have weathered slightly better than the modern ones. I once rebuilt a 2.0 V4 in a Laundry Van, to be used to go between UK and Amshterdam in the early 90s. That was beige... It ended up with a slightly lumpy cam and a 1.5mm overbore due to wobbly bores. All 4 pistons had cracked rings on the stripdown, but it only smoked a bit. Amazing engine when finished. Last Mk1 I looked at, was a yellow Coachbuilt Camper in about 1996/7, it needed the steering box sorting for test, I had to get a Mk2 box in it, due to lack of rebuild parts. Shame to have lost the originality. I'd like a diesel LHD recovery truck, with the lumpy grille.

Posted

Did the lumpy grille one have a sort of extended front end, I seem to recall the York engined ones had to have a bigger front to accomodate the motor?

*Edit: forgot my first recovery truck was a Mk2. 2.0 petrol, it ran a bit shit until I had the points done then it was great. The ramps were a crap steel frame with lenghts of ply and they broke a couple of times when driving cars on. It didn't have a winch either so it sort of lost me money with some jobs. Sadly don't think I have a picture of it anywhere :(

What are the two cars in front of it?

I think the nearest is a Mercedes 170, and under the tarp is a Fiat 124 Spyder, very likely Abarth. I couldn't get any closer as the yard was closed (it was Sunday afternoon) and I haven't been back since.

Thanks.

To be honest, I don't know much about old separate wheelarch cars but I knew I recognised the Fiat, I just couldn't figure out what it was .
