But they made a comment about the split rim wheels that are 2 parts with a locking ring. The fella said that they are dangerous and are banned in the US but they are still legal in the UK???

 

Are they as dangerous as they said and if so, why are they allowed to be used here?

The danger is when tyres are being fitted and they have to be inflated in a cage. When I was at college they had a picture of the aftermath of a Swedish tyre fitter sitting on a split rim wheel while blowing it up, the result was a fitter shaped impact mark in the ceiling.

Some old tyre fitters have dents from these on their foreheads as witness to lucky escapes. Not sure that they are that common now though.

On the programme they said the locking ring can come loose and then the 2 parts of the wheel rim fly apart at huge velocity. Obviously if that happened on the road it could be lethal.
