Bit of a weird one this. It's obviously been overheating and / or pressurising the cooling system as there's coolant splatters all over the engine bay, but there's no sign of water in the oil or vice versa, and the engine starts first time and sounds quite healthy. Maybe it's something else, like a blocked rad or a knackered water pump. It does have a really tidy interior, though, and the underside looks pretty good too, if heavily undersealed.

Hey Wuvvum, that gold chrome bumper one I had last year was much the same.I replaced both the waterpump and head gasket. There were no signs of oil in water and the gasket wasn't split. It overheated due to the waterpump which banana'd the head. The machine shop took 18 thou off the head when they skimmed it.

If it's the 1647 it's a nice engine to work on. A proper Renault engine, not the modern shit they seem to feel the need to pump out.

Do you now own this, then?

Nope. Put a last minute 250 bid in but someone had already bid 250 and I didn't have time to get another bid in. Still, maybe I'll get a second chance offer.

Stupidly - when I'm still working on the 9 and the 18 GTX estate, I lobbed a bid in on this too, but I wasn't going over 200. Spot-on, the engines in these really are great and will go on round the clock twice without any bother if looked after. As I'm in the middle of replacing the waterpump and cambelt on the estate, I suspect that this is probably down to sludge in the cooling system somewhere - probably the rad.

It was quite a tidy car - IIRC the underside was in surprisingly good nick and the interior was pretty much immaculate. Sounded decent enough too, if a little tappety. Had the head gasket actually gone? I remember there being signs of coolant having sprayed liberally around the engine bay, but the oil looked pretty clean.

I think you may have gone back in time and ended up driving my 305 estate again.
