WUV'S GR9 SHITE CLEAROUT - choice of shite, one low price

OK, I've realised over the last few days that my fleet is rapidly spiralling out of control, and there are a few cars that I'm just not using at all, so it's time to have a bit of a cull.

First up is the 106. It's an XN, which means it's bog-basic - 954cc engine, 4-speed box, and not a great deal in the way of equipment - a pop-up sunroof is about its only concession to decadence. It's a good little car though - I was using it a fair bit up until I bought the Rover, and it's been fine, even managing a high-speed dash to Stansted when I overslept and was running late for my flight.

It's done 120-odd thousand miles so there's a bit of wear and tear - the driver's seat backrest has a rip in the fabric and the top of the steering wheel is a little worn - but it runs fine and is surprisingly nippy for its engine size. It doesn't seem to suffer too much from only having four gears either - it's not any lower-geared overall than a five-speeder, the ratios are just slightly further apart, but it maintains motorway speeds quite comfortably (although I think it needs a wheel balance as it vibrates a bit above 65) and seems to do around 50mpg. It has a full set of Peugeot wheeltrimz too, and although the bodywork isn't immaculate it's in pretty good nick overall for its age and mileage.

Only other negative points that I've noticed are a bit of brake judder from high speeds, and the stereo is not currently wired in - the previous owner had an expensive CD player in the car which he removed when I bought it, and I just shoved the original stereo back in to fill the hole. Oh, and the offside CV joint has just started to click slightly on full lock. I have to emphasise though that I haven't been over the car with a fine tooth comb though - I've treated it as a "jump in and go" car and aside from checking the oil level occasionally (it doesn't appear to have used a significant amount) I haven't really done a lot with or to it.

Anyway it's MoT'd until next May and I've recently put six months' rent on it so it's taxed until the end of Feb. I want £350 for it; here's some pics.

Next up is this stunning example of a Mitsubishi Caris... er, I mean Volvo S40. This was an accidental eBay purchase that I really have no use for at all at the moment. It's a 1.8 SE with about 163K on the clock, and it is just as competent-but-dull as my last S40, although being a 1.8 it goes slightly better. I've done absolutely nothing with this bar drive it home from St Albans, which it managed fine.

It's got a bit of history with it, and the cambelt was done at just over 120K, so got a while left in it yet. Cruise control doesn't work, but the trip computer does, as do the electric windows, central locking and the stereo. Aircon doesn't seem to blow cold either. The bonnet catch also appears to need adjusting as I haven't been able to close the bonnet fully - it's held down perfectly securely by the safety catch though. It's MoT'd till March, although the tax runs out tomorrow night. I'm after £350 for this one as well, although this is negotiable within reason. Below are some rubbish phone-cam pics.

Last but not least is the 156. I took this in part exchange against the LDV van when I sold it, and I've done very little with it since - I feel a bit bad really as it's a great car to drive, but as a daily runabout the Rover is just better suited to my needs.

It's a 1.8 Twin Spark on a V plate. Can't remember the mileage off the top of my head - I'll check tomorrow evening. It's MoT'd till around February time (will check this tomorrow too) but no tax. It drives fine, pulls well for a 1.8 and corners like a go-kart (at least in part due to those rather silly alloys).

Being an Alfa it does have a few issues - the remote button in the key has long since shuffled off this mortal coil so it needs to be unlocked via the doors in the traditional manner, and the exhaust is blowing from the flexi pipe, although not currently loudly enough to attract the attention of the powers that be. The cat has also been removed at some point in the past, although it passed its emissions test without it this year. It also needs a door mirror - it currently has a temporary chrome replacement which looks somewhat out of place. Mechanically it all seems good though, and it had a cambelt not too long ago. This one's also £350 as it is. Below is the only pic I have of it at the moment - I'll take some more over the weekend.

Sorry, should have mentioned my location  - I'm in the Norwich area.

LOL, sorry. This will be the last time, I promise. (Until I buy another Alfa, at least.)

What Cavette Said But With Me Saying It Instead Of Him.

I hope to Christ it doesn't have a leather interior and a wooden steering wheel. Because then I'm fucked.

I'm worried about that too!

It doesn't have a leather interior or a wooden steering wheel, alas. It's a standard TS with a black cloth interior.

I haven't been able to get any more pics this weekend as I didn't get a chance to get to the car during the rapidly diminishing daylight hours. Can confirm though that mileage is just over 100K and the MoT expires on 8th April, so a bit longer than I thought.

OK, so the S40's gone to pastures new. Pug is still here - that might be going on Gumtree soon, I'm sure someone will want a cheap economical little runabout for something.

Alfa's still here too - here's some more pics I took this arvo.

Side skirts are held on with screws at the moment - looks OK though I reckon.

Front seats have the Alfa logo in the backrests; interior is in reasonably good nick but does need a good valet.

This is the worst bit of grot I've found.

This is just to show the mileage.

Bit more info, as I sat in the car and had a brief play this afternoon - both front windows (electric) go up and down fine, but the rear windows (manual) don't - think the mechanisms are worn, and the n/s winder is missing. Electric sunroof tilts and slides OK. Heater fan works on the first three settings but not on the fourth - probably a fuse as lots of modern cars have a separate fuse for the maximum setting. Wipers and washers are fine. Side, head and tail lights and indicators all work; reversing and fog lights don't, although I suspect the rear fog is just a bulb as it was working, and the fronts just haven't been plugged back in. The little triangular bit of plastic trim on the driver's door which hides the wiring for the mirror is missing. The electric mirror on the driver's side works; the passenger's doesn't, for obvious reasons. Exhaust is slightly noisier than I remember it, but still no louder than the average boy racer's Saxo, and does sound nice when given some beans. Front tyres are legal but will need replacing fairly soon. That about covers it I think...

For the love of God will someone buy that Alfa please. Such a lot of car (and fun) for so little money.

the mind is strong but the wallet is weak!

I'd love it but ...no cash

Bump as the Alfa is still sat there doing bugger all. I'd advertise it on RR but it'd probably get dropped into the "budget motoring" section that nobody ever reads.

...Whereas this entire forum is a Budget Motoring section, and we all read it! :D

I reckon if you punted it on somwhere for twice that much you will probably get at least £500.
