Jim Bell Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 , I bet the 1800 is a real screamer! It is indeed. 130 ish bhp per tonne is a enough to build a grin.
eddyramrod Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I IZ WELJEL. Ace, well done to all parties.
Jim Bell Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Important things that I learned about about painting today. 1) Preparation is key! 2) Always paint in a suitable place. Ideally indoors, away from the wind and rain, where the air is temperate enough to allow the paint to dry. 3) Allow yourself plenty of time. Do not rush. 4) Make sure the panel is clean, keyed and free of any adhesive or residue. 5) Mask carefully. If you're unsure, take it off and begin again. I have learned that these five things are important, because I did the opposite of all five during my first attempt at painting something. Learn by your mistakes they say. And I learned a lot today. Front: Before: Masked: Rubbed and primed: Painted: Finished: It literally looks like I've altered the pic using Microsoft Paint. But it looks that in real life too. Hooray!I need to try again and do better. Rear: Before: Primed and painted: Done: Terrible effort, but at least Ive learned some things. brickwall, loserone, overrun and 2 others 5
loserone Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) I think for a fair comparison, you should also picture the OTHER side, which was the rustier / slightly crashed into an astra side to start with! [edit] actually, I'm not sure that would be a fair comparison. That arch has been bare metal since JUNE! Good work! Don't forget the front mudflap - it's in the box. Jim Bell Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I think for a fair comparison, you should also picture the OTHER side, which was the rustier / slightly crashed into an astra side to start with! Well obviously the side that was done by a lady is 1,000,000,000 times better.
overrun Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I still say it looks better after your repairs. Front, especially. BP give me a shot of this, yesterday. Having previously driven numerous MX-5's and a 1300cc 323 as well as a 323 GTR, It felt nice and familiar. The ride seems decent. Firm, yet doesn't crash over the bumps and the engine is revvy and responsive in any gear. Just like an early MX-5. The cone filter and pop-up lights on a 5dr hatch that thinks it's something of a coupe, just add to the experience. As a car for <£100, you will struggle to beat it. Also, we multi metered the battery. 12.5V at rest and 14-14.4V when running. The low cell appearance may just be the battery internals, visible through the case?As this professional diagnosis also involved wiggling the battery, to look for any sloshing acid. eddyramrod 1
loserone Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 It's a hell of a lot better than bare metal! Really pleasing to see it being looked after and more importantly enjoyed again. Battery was charged overnight last week, plus a couple of jump starts in december and january. It has been topped up once shortly after I got it - it was about where the line is - but didn't seem to need it again. I reckon with a bit of daily use it'll come back to life OK. After the charge it got as high as 13.7v. Might not be clear from the Fuelly history, but I found I was getting 3-4 MPG more from 'Super' than I was from basic supermarket shit too. I had a few tanks where I only got 25MPG..

Mr_Bo11ox Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I remember a lad on the blue forum selling one of these a couple of years ago. He was barrying it up pretty bad, painting the front panel black, stupid air filter, wanky wheels, shopping list etc, he couldnt leave it alone even though he had it up for sale. The longer it didnt sell, the less likely it was ever to sell as he cack-handedly fucked it up a little more every time he went near it. he seemed happy enough in himself though so WHATEVS

Jim Bell Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Well the sun was out, the sky was clear so I decided to fix the sunroof. It tilted, but the slide function wouldnt slide. Took the switch out and cleaned the contacts up a bit. Success! eddyramrod 1

HillmanImp Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 What's the fuel filter made of? Solid gold? Does look really nice though in the photo above though. Might pop one of these on the Audi replacement list if it never comes back from the garage after it fucked itself outside the MOT test station. Never liked these when they were new but the pop up headlights look ace now.
Jim Bell Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Parts are made from UNOBTANIUM dude. Well I struggled anyway. The parts manager said the car didn't exist untill I showed him it. Then he said it was an import as they never sold the GTs in the UK. I patiently explained that they did, they're just very rare. He had to ring someone up in the end. Jesus probably. Another fun fact is that they never made a Haynes for the car or engine apparently either. The 1.8 DOHC 16v seems to be pretty rare. There's loads of 323f BG 1.6s still around though. brickwall 1
twosmoke300 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Try a fuel filter for a Renault koleos dci .100 quid from Renault Jim Bell 1
Jim Bell Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Spotted my real life looky-likey. The first 343f BG I've seen since taking custody of the current daily. The spotee is a 1.6 glxi 16v. Vastly inferior to the mighty GT, but nice to see one surviving. Mrs Shitpeas spotted it. If you squint, you can see how pleased whith herself she is. Do all grab a snap if you see one on the roads. trigger, michael t, brickwall and 3 others 6
overrun Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 £316 RRP What a rip-off, compared to yours. Which as I say, I thoroughly enjoyed driving back from Yorkland and is the best 100 quid car I have ever known. Jim Bell and eddyramrod 2

loserone Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 I should probably have mentioned, there's a chap on the club323F forum who runs the 'ford probe store', also MX6, MX3. Sells a few consumables for the BG too, at not-terrible prices. Parts being unobtainium are definitely an issue - I have a pile of master and slave cylinders in the 'garage' part of the spare room which didn't fit, but looked just the same. I bought six in total (and it was off the road three months waiting for the right ones to arrive.) I have some PDF copies of the russian workshop manual, plus some others for other slightly different models, if you ever needed those :S Looking very smart. In the couple of years it was mine, I only saw three others. One 1.6 in blue, in the next street along, one grey 1.6 with the 'daisy' wheels on from an MX5, and one red GT, LHD on Spanish plates. I raced round the supermarket car park to turn round and try to catch it up, but it was already away on the A66.
Jim Bell Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Well its dead. The starter motor has been turning slower (I thought the battery might be on its way) and slower over the lst week and now its ground litterally to a halt.Battery is fine and theres plenty of power, so after conflab with wiser men it was agreed that the starter motor itself is the culprit. Tried rocking the fuck out of it in gear to move it with no joy.It seems the unit itself is mounted down the back of the block underneath the inlet manifold as thats about the only play I cant see with the car on the ground. Cant even get to it to tap it. So its gonna have to sit still for a while. And the hunt for a 323f BG GT starter motor begins. As Loserone mentioned, a lot of parts are sold for these cars in error, so I think its going to be a bit of a lottery finding a correct replacemet, but I'm gonna perciveer.

Mr_Bo11ox Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Not an earthing problem??? Run a jump lead from the engine to the -ve on the battery and see if that makes any difference. If not, perhaps try taking the starter off and having a look at it - might be able to repair it. Jim Bell 1
loserone Posted September 14, 2014 Author Posted September 14, 2014 DISLIKE. Doesn't look like there's any on the FROD PBROE SOTRE either. I did manage to get a few parts posted from dealers for reasonable prices, worth ringing around a few. Stoneacre Harrogate were particularly helpful.

I'd rather have a working one to hand if it turns out to be the motor itself.

Yeah, I looked there first dude as they do have a lot of stuff in stock (even red HT leads), but not a starter. Probably gonna roll the dice on this:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280873613648?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT#ht_2100wt_954 Its a library picture, but the blurb lies seem to think it'll fit ABSOLUTELY ANY CAR IN THE WORLD, which doesnt fill me with confidence. I've given him the VIN and Reg, and hes confident its correct mind. Let the games begin.
Jim Bell Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 Well, having bought a voltmeter specifically to check the battery was good, and having subsiquently me checking the battery with the meter and declaring it fine.....................it was the battery. Starter is fine. What an dumbass noob mistake. Ah well, please insert Bosch to continue: Thats better. Treated her to a shiny new GENUINE OEM MAZDA JDM OMG fuel filter, oil and oil filter too.
