Herald suggestions will a series work?

I've just bought a very tidy '65 Herald 1200. Any suggestions for relatively painless engine swaps. I know the mighty Seth has dropped a Mazda in his, but finding one of those over here might prove a little tricky. Any other suggestions?

Stick with the 1200 - lots of Spitfire tuning goodies to get more power out of them, and they're a good basic engine. The 1500 isn't worth the hassle of fitting as it'll probably break its bottom end on the test drive.

Similarly, different final drives can make them a bit more hospitable on motorways. Think a Spitty overdrive diff is the best for cruising.

I Have been told an Essex V4 2.8 should/does drop straight in as I have been toying with what to do with mine should I evantualy get to do something, Ive started stripping the body work but every time I want to do sommat the Evil one wot I married comes up with a better idea on places to go/jobs to do. I will have to uprate to brakes from a spitty or rwd dolly as I got drums on mine. How about a 1850 dolly lump or 2000 TR7

the essex v4 is a 1.7 or 2 litre 4 pot

the essex v6 is a 2.5, 3.0, 3.1, 3.4 or 3.8 engine

the cologne v6 comes in 2.8 variety

Found a pair of carbs on a manifold in the boxes of bits I got with it, so I think I'll have a play with what's in there...........I'm not exactly Giant Haystacks, but 50/60s cars all seemed to have been designed for people modelled on the bloody Krankies................

okay I stand corrected, its the v6 2.8 jobbie im sure, I think it was the guy at triumph nuts in Cheshire that told me, but don't hold me to it.

Colc, I know what you mean about the Krankies, when I sat in my Herald to steer it onto the flat bed the first thing In my mind was sod originality that boat tiller will have to go, I need a 10 inch wheel, I could not get my legs under the wheel and drove like I had the biggest pair of boxers on \____/ :D

I'm going to ditch my wheel for something smaller, and see if I can shift the seat runners back a bit further. Why Triumph fitted a wheel that big, when the steering is that light, I fail to understand.

Someone has just "given" me a professionally rebuilt Metro turbo engine. As I know nothing about Mini/Metro enmgines, what would I need to convert this to rwd?

Posted

You'd need a new block and crank, they're completely different from the RWD A-series components. The RWD flywheel bolts conventionally to the crankshaft, whereas the Metro flywheel sits on a long taper

E.g., Marina, flywheel end at left of picture:

OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH me likes that, please may I win the Euro Lottery and have one of those. Is that red top from a Omega or Senator cos all the other motors are front wheel drive arn't they, Oh hang on,....... the Toledo was front wheel drive  but could fit a big Vauxhall engine in a Herald could I not, Being thick again, how do you get around the fuel injection and gubbins that go with it (ecu etc) or is it really not rocket science. I know pc fuel injected a older car but that seemed like an awful lot of hard work to me. I'd rather sqeeze and go.

The Toledo was RWD, it was the 1300 that was FWD. The Vauxhall engine's been around enough for the RWD stuff to ba available off-the-shelf.
