hi all just wondering what to use to clean metal (steel) before priming (aerosol) so that it adheres better to the metal, im restoring an old bicycle which will be stored outside, and are there any household cleaners which do the trick ?

thanks :)

Panel wipe from an autofactors is what you ideally need, but I guess you could maybe use white spirit or something?

Whenever I've gone back to bare metal on the car I've just given it a clean with white spirit. I'm sure it's not ideal but I've never had any paint fall off or otherwise develop faults.

Household cleaners usually have salt or other ingredients which are no good for paint. Other than white spirit, try getting isopropyl alcohol from a chemists. Vinegar might even work.

Some Bilt Hamber Surfex HD would be ideal for that. If that's a bit too pricey furnish yourself with some Flash all purpose cleaner. It does a great degreasing job!

cellulose thinners does the trick - it shifts everything and leaves nothing behind.
