I have a problem, I'm looking at sub-£500 MGF's for summer on ebay. Can you please persuade me to stop?

Just do it. Bottle of K-Seal and you're away! Please do not hold me responsible if it ends up being MEGAFAILZ.

Mgf 1.8 VVC 97 P plate the vehicle has covered just over 80k, I took this vehicle is as part exchange against another vehicle andit ran perfect until the other day when the headgasket went hence the low price , It is mot'ed until November 19th 2011.

The vehicle is in very good condition all round only a few marks here and there the inside of the wheel arches are starting to peel, The roof is in good condition has got some wear and tear but this is a 97 plate car.

The vehicle has got 4 very good tyres and has also got FSH up until 77k.

This will make a cheap little project im sure it isnt a difficult repair as i know these cars have a following but i havent got the time or space to do it.

THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START SO DONT COME EXPECTING TO HEAR IT START THE VEHICLE WILL NEED TO BE TOWED AWAY.

STRICTLY SOLD AS SEEN AS I HAVE DECLARED THE VEHICLE IS A NON RUNNER

TEXTS WONT BE ANSWERED AND SILLY OFFERS WONT BE CONSIDERED

the price is £599 firm this is a real cheap project

.

I like 'em. Do the checks, hand over the cash and enjoy the sunshine. I do a 60 mile a day commute in a £500 Fiat X1/9 turbo-... whats the worst that could happen? :D

Go and have a look on AROnline, there's a blog on there about 500 quid Fs. Suffice to say you don't get a lot for your money.

They're really great cars, but they're too unreliable. K-seal cured my partial HGF - but I feel cheated. It's frowned upon by the arsehole attitude of the MGF owner (passed down from the MGB owner), but it works and doesn't do anything bad to the car.

I don't know what might be up with that engine, but removing it on the subframe isn't a pleasant or easy job, especially as the bolts holding the subframe and engine/gearbox mounts in are usually corroded in - but I got away with breaking one out of 8 on the subframe.

The underfloor coolant pipes rust and leak, ageing rubber water pipes split if they're disturbed, the steel radiators will need replacing about now. Basically, everything associated with the cooling system, which is it's Achilles heal, is prone to age related failure. The typical MGF owner doesn't know much about mechanicals of the car, so don't expect a lot of help from so-called experts on MGF forums, there's a lot of internet bollocks passed through and it becomes gospel, when it's not even true in the first place (K-seal and airlocks in the system is prime example).

They don't have any mud/water traps, and they're really sparsely rust proofed underneath, but they seem fairly decent at rust avoiding.

Get a £750-800 MX-5 instead. This seems to be the ebay price for a tatty but still useable Eunos Roadster (JDM OMG ETC) with some Mot. Should be good for a few months, then flog it on in October. If its run out of Mot by then, a kit car builder (or enthusiastic Herald owner) will have it off you.

You can get UK market cars for that sort of money as well, but be prepared for a bit of remedial welding action to the sills and rear wheel arches, and the hood may be 'enhanced' by gaffer tape. But if you're going to drive it around with the hood up....

On the basis that one is the VVC I wouldn't as they are not as DIY friendly as a standard head. The head will come off without taking the engine out but if it needs skimming you have to lock the VVC bit correctly before removing cams.

MX-5 is a good call as there are plenty about for £7-800.Last month I traded an L.reg MX-5 to a dealer friend of mine for £750. He sold it next day for a grand.
