fleet planning

I've been doing some planning around the wish list over the next 24 months. This last 6 months of austerity has been good for me in that it has forced me to mend and make do and to behave myself in my shite dabbling. I have become more mechanically competant and know and appreciate my vehicles a lot more than I did before. We've just been ablt to secure finance for our new business venture and are kicking off next week - the plan is already set and we have some customers lined up already so I am confident that within 6 months wew will be back in shape and I can allow myself a shite budget again so - here's the plan:

Daily Drivers

We're gonna get the Missus one of those new fiat 500's with the 900 cc engine on a business lease. We'll get the company decals on it and use it as her work car/runaround

I'm going to sort the 240 Torsy to full operational order - whilst i'll be able to aford another car by then I like the torsy too much its been too loyal

Toys

Sherpa van - will be used this sumer we have some trips planned

New addition

I had thought about buying a really nice scimitar but reading Dollywobbler;s threads on his reminded me how cramped they can be and how unrelaxing the driving experience is so Ive been giving this some real thought and have decided that I'm gonna save up for a decent Series 3 Jag XJ6 or Daimler Sov. Cool, practical, quick, stylish and relatively simple to keep on the road on a modest budget. I had a nice Daimler Sov S3 a couple of years back, needed a bit of work but I got bit by the bug.

Sell up

probably sell the 850

Where does the BX fit in the grand plan once it has had a good Bollox fettleing?

An 850 AWD estate would make perfect sense as an occasional load lugger and snow machine, alongside the BX14 eco-daily. (The Impreza AWD will be going, it's my third and I'm bored of 'em.) I have been on the hunt for an 850 to break for bits and take to Thailand, so it would be sensible to also have one on the road here too. So keep me in mind if you're moving it on; they're not a common thing!

I keep planning to get something with a whiff of Kei about it, but utterly fail, so I think I'm going to just stop planning and see what I end up with.

Is it "never again" on an XJ40 after the Daimler Double six? A nice XJ40 is cheap beyond belief these days.

XJ40s are cheap, but the much-better X300 is also turning into a winning value wagon. Tempting when you see what you can get for less than a bag of sand.

not sure if BX will be a long term keeper. Will bear you in mind re 850 AWD if I can get the missus to part with it. It's dead at the moment- needs a new alternator!

I love XJ40s and the XJ300 is a cracking car and sensible but I really want another S3.....just really like them and they are falling into proper classic territory these days so maybe can't be described as shite!

DD6 is somthing everyone should do once! I would not dismiss a S3 Double Six they have less to go wrong - not as swift though!

True. I far prefer the styling of the XJ40, though such things are just personal preference. The X300 is undeniably a good car. Mechanically they are very strong, you just need to watch for rust.

I would like a V12 too, but the fuel consumption is a killer! I love the XJ40 too but have to admit the Series cars are beautiful, both inside and out. I can well see why you're tempted!

I think the XJ40 will always appeal to the shitter more than the X400 which is far too sensible by half!

Ta!

Which engine is it? If I find a breaker soon I might be able help with that.

Edit: just found this:

For the last model year (1996/1997), the 850 AWD (All Wheel Drive) model was introduced with a new 193 bhp (144 kW; 196 PS) low pressure turbo 2.4 litre engine (B5254T).

Might an alternator from a N/A fwd 850 fit? It would be worth whipping it off and posting a photo for you to compare anyway.

Can't you just change the brush/regulator pack? They cost £10-15 and you often don't even have to remove the alternator.
