Hi all. since passing my test 20 years ago I've owned all manner of autoshite, some of which only got sold on because I got bored. This is my current motor.

I had to search long and hard to find a pre-pilot van with the 2.0 perkins engine. Its quite possibly the worst vehicle I have ever driven, but I can't help loving it.

Before was this

I definitely would not class this as shite, a rare 740 turbo diesel. performance and economy.it was in really good nick but bit the dust when a hub bearing collapsed and it lost a wheel at speed. terrifying.

then there's this...2.3 diesel sapphire. nothing wrong with it, just totally worthless and I couldn't handle how slow it was at the time.

and this...I had some money so fulfilled a childhood ambition. an SD1 that wasnt totally rotten. a 3500SE with the V8 and manual box. sold to someone more able to give it the time and attention it deserved.

over the years there has been countless maestros, cortinas of various marques, princesses, marinas, granadas, the odd bit of american autoshite...I'll see what pics I can dig up

and there had to be one of these...

They are just as bad as everyone said and I should have known better. just awful and I lasted about a month with it.

Anyone who bowls about in an old post office Sherpa is alright with me.

Bienvenue.

Quintuple bonus points for having a Perkins engine in the LDV-Freight-Sherpa/Rover non-coupe.

Oh, and welcome along sir.

couple more...

mercedes 420se. looks quite smart, doesnt it? theres no such thing as a cheap S class though...the expense will come. this had just about everything wrong with it. fantastic car when it was going, but everytime something went wrong it cost 4 times the price to fix. £80 for a dizzy cap? thats more than I usually pay for a whole car!

and an interesting diversion...a 1981 cadillac seville with a 5.7 V8 diesel engine. this engine is usually used by our american cousins as a boat anchor. its that bad.

Seville is mega, is that one of those 'bustleback' things?

Fleetwood is the stuff of dreams!

correct. Even when new these were considered shite. diesels used to blow head gaskets for a hobby,6.0 v8-6-4 petrol didn't work properly (it had primitive computer control that was supposed to shut off cylinders when not needed, taking it down to a 4 pot for highway cruising- really too advanced for the technology of the time) and the 4.1 V8 had porous blocks. oddly, they were front wheel drive. the box sat alongside the engine and was linked to the crank by a chain. cadillac's austin allegro?

Fleetwood is the stuff of dreams!

It sure is. amazing nick for its age, and you wouldn't believe the toys its got for such an old car. electric seats, aerial, air con, electric quarterlights, auto dipping headlights, self closing boot...7.0 V8 and about 340bhp!! all for less than a second hand mondeo. not that it gets used a lot with petrol getting on for 1.40 a litre, but then its a weekend hobby car really.

you obviously like your diesels

yeah...I like the choice of running on veg if I need to, also I really can't afford to run a petrol with the mileage I'm doing at the moment. tucked away for when I feel a bit more flush is a 1989 volvo 740 GLT 16 valve. its my "keeper" and is much cherished.

Wanna bet?

My last American car before I left the Yuk, two years older than that gorgeous Fleetwood your mate has. Like you with the SD1, one of those things I always promised myself...

Welcome, fella, you're gonna fit right in!

Really nice thread and pictures I would really like to have this kind of vehicle but I'm still thinking if a hybrid car would be better. Hybrid automobiles are said to save individual's a lot of money. It seems plausible enough, does not it? Hybrid vehicles do use less gasoline than a car that utilizes only an internal combustion engine. A new study is challenging that claim, and challenging marketing claims can be tantamount to heresy.

wrong website you are at here, mate. how is spending 26 grand on a prius going to save me money? My idea of saving money is buying an old snotter for 300 quid and running it until it won't pass another MOT.

My non-hybrid van uses LESS fossil fuel than any hybrid. veg oil is a lot cheaper than petrol or diesel.
