Lada Range. Note how ginger four eyes there would get taken to school in one. Somehow I doubt he was first picked for the football team

Another batch. First up is the 1977 Austin Morris range. Apart form the fact it focuses almost entirely on how economical and cheap to run the cars are it's surprisingly just how miserable the specifications were (haven't scanned the spec sheet pages, but when it listed a speedometer as a feature, you know you're in trouble)

Now Fiat, also from the heady days of 1977. The Strada and X1/9 look remarkably modern compared the the rest, but I'm going to be controversial and state that the 126 and Mirafiori Sport aside, the range looks pretty bland

Renault 1989 lineup. I don't know what it is about the 21 but I've always liked the design, although it's been a long time since I've seen one on the road. In fact, aside from the 5 it's a long time since I've seen any of them

Finally this is what would have greeted you if you had walked into a Mazda dealership in 1990. I'm guessing it must be just before the MX5 was released since all you get are teaser shots. That 626 coupe is a handsome beast

This thread is fantastic! Do you have an FSO brochure?

Posted

Sadly not, for the moment. But did someone say Stanza, Bluebird and 1978(?) Datsuns?

A real treat for you now boys and girls - a Sierra launch brochure. Well I think it's actually a magazine supplement as it's printed on shiny magazine type material. It's actually a rather interesting read as it goes in to detail about the design, how much more advanced it is than the Cortina, the aerodynamics, rust protection (lolz) and why rear wheel drive is better.

Plus of course the quasi legendary Sierra Base with grey grille and droopy mirrors. I guess that didn't last very long - can't possibly think why

Such a joy to see that Sierra brochure. I wonder how many of the base models had their front grilles painted body colour by Ford dealers before their new owners took delivery of them? I can't recall ever seeing a non-body colour one :)

Posted

All Sierra saloons being on 165/13s with the estate having 175/13s.

Seems strange that when the modern equivalents run at least a 16" wheel, even in poverty spec.

Posted

Awesome scans, thanks. The Fiat 132 looks good in orange, but I'm sure in the UK they were only ever available in Silver, Blue or Bronze.

I dont think ive ever seen on either. Funniest thing is how the brochure boasts its distinctive and people will notice it! Surely must have cost more to develop two different designs of wing mirror?

That Lada brochure is fantastically naff looking. We had a 1500 Riva Saloon when I was a kid, and went all the way to Scarborough in it amongst other places...

Also, I didn't know (or most likely forgot) that Renault made a 21 hatchback. I remember the saloons and the amazement at the Savannah having seven seats, but not the hatch.

Were they rare or something?

GR11 Stuff NC!, I enjoyed them, I also have that Sierra brochure, I bought the orginial dealer folder pack from Rootes_Arrow on ebay, It's rammed full of information on the "new" Sierra from 1982, It's a great read.

Not really. I reckon they sold about 50/50. There seemed to be loads around about 10 years ago, but they do seem to have all disappeared now. Saw loads in France earlier this year, nearly all hatchbacks. All tatty as f**k.

Wanted a car to take my sister to her wedding. Being an impoverished student at the time I rented one from where I used to work. Got a 2.0 auto Renault 21 Hatch in white, don't know what happened with the paperwork as I only got charged for a Fiesta sized car.

Thanks for the brochure scans, I like the Sierra one, I might have a SD1 brochure around somewhere.

Posted

Interesting scans, thanks! :D

I see that the Sierra Ghia was initially only available with front electric windows as standard whereas rear electric windows were an option. GL spec had the option of all 4 electric windows. :!:

Now I'm not normally a fan of Vauxhalls, however I did have a Nova Swing in Diamond White for my first car, hence I'm very cuffed I've just found the brochure for it. Whilst most ended up with Motorsport sunstrips and Kingdom bodykits, I must say that it's actually a well proportioned and pretty car, at least in 3 door guise.

Odd how the passenger mirror is an option on all of the models. I know I've said that I like older brochures as they aren't full of "lifestyle" shite, but to be honest - this one is. Seems only fun loving people will buy a Nova Swing!

I really have a burning desire to understand why the Nova Swing was fitted with a different style of door mirror to the rest of the Nova range...did GM have a batch of Chevette mirrors to use up, perhaps?

Posted

Blimey, never actually noticed that! I remember my car had 2 wing mirrors but I'm pretty sure they were the square type

I now know what my grandad paid for his Nova 1.2 Swing in lovely brown! His had a radio cassette though!

Posted

Those Corona liftbacks must have been the cheapest cars with standard aircon back in those days.

Posted

What was their market share like back then? Most of these cars have all but disappeared from UK roads, you see loads more Accraims than Corollas of that vintage.

Posted

Acclaims wouldn't have been subject to import restrictions.

Posted

I don't know about anyone else, but I really want a Crown

Posted

The Corolla saloon and coupé look sweet. :D Must have been the 1983-1987 model when they introduced the Corolla hatchback/liftbacks. :)

Time for a few more, this time from foreign shores. First we have the Mustang II, which is solid gold shite and bears a strong resemblance to the OMG REAR END EXPLOSHUN Pinto.

Nice to see that that the Ford Falcon complies with ‘Freedom of Information’ regs, if I ask it for some fuel consumption figures its obliged by law to provide em.

Posted

Mine managed around 12mpg

Posted

I love that generation Falcon for all its reinvigorated MK2 Granny-ness. Apart from those splendid digital dials, what a thoroughly miserable dashboard, though.

Posted

The Laser looks like a Mazda 323 with a new conk. Aren't a lot of Aussie Fords mostly Mazda based?
