Does this look a bit 'suss'

8 year old mondeo at not daft money, just what I could do with at the minute, but aside from the vendors cretinous use of the english language, there's something that makes me suspect a wrong un. Shouldn't the bumper insertd be black, for instance...

Any thoughts before I push the button?

The fact it has chavvy aftermarket pedals fitted and that he listens to radio 1 would put me off, And yes the bump strips should be place.

Mate, it's a Mondeo Gear!(sic) Grab it while it's hot!

Posted

I'd buy it purely for the "Anti-The car" safety feature. Is this something to do with rust? These look a lot like updated Sierras I think, wonder if they looked back and used some design pointers?

His somewhat limited feedback is ok, he managed to get someone to part with three and a half large ones for a 2002 Hyundai Coupe, so he may be a rather illiterate version of the Doctor...........

Something doesn't seem right about it to me. Can't put my finger on it though his description which reads more like a sales brochure, non-existant side views, generally shit photographs and the only listed bad point is 'a few minor blemishes'. Minor enough not to include in the pictures? Maybe that's why he hasn't taken many.

In actual fact the more I think about it the more it seems rather than him talking at any real length about what it's like to drive, how long he's owned it etc the more I think he's either a trader or he's trying to offload it because there's something amiss with it.

I'd suggest viewing it first and sounding him out as well as a bloody good test drive of the car.

Oh, he also tried offloading this... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... egory=9858 in December stating he wanted a diesel. So at best he's probably only had the Mondeo for a couple of months tops.

Edit: Don't ask him for the handbook, he's sold that on eBaY

and a Hyanddry coupe too.

What would be the 'going rate' for one then? Not many about for less.

[No pez-powered / poverty spec / 5-speed cars need apply]

Just before Xmas I bought a 130 tdci Ghia X. After a day with it I began to hate it. After a week it was the worst car I have owned. This despite heated leather/decent stereo/defrost screen etc etc. It was capable enough but horrible. It even stirred bile in Mrs P. I've still got the backache despite getting rid...

DON'T DO IT :twisted::twisted::twisted:

Why no pez powered ones? Saves messing with all the complexity of the diesel versions.

Lots of miles at the minute, rates are down, dino-juice up, the sumz dictate it.

I just wouldn't bother with something like that, ready to bin a DMF, turbo, injectors or fuel pump which would shit on your fuel savings.

Have a look on Autotrader's website, you'll find more 'real world' prices than you'll ever see on eBaY. Mk3 Mondeos are going for (virtually) peanuts at the moment and I think your ebay friend is going to struggle to attract many bids due to his 'buy-it-now' price. Even reasonably good 'bins' struggle on ebay because people like it as an auction and want to feel like they're (potentially) bidding for a bargain.

How about something like a C5 HDi? They should be cheaper to buy than the Mondeo as they're 'less popular' so I'd imagine you'd score a better equipped and/or newer one for the same money as the Mongdeo.

I have to admit I don't really know what cars are worth, but £1500 seems a bit much for a nine year old car with signs of ill-advised tinkering.

Posted

I don't know either.

I do know that I'm getting fed up with my 19 year old car shitting itself in some way or other every couple of weeks.

It's not the cost of fixing it up every time, which is pretty negligable, but the buggerance factor is doing my head in, and I am getting grief over it.

trade is £850 in excellent condition on that, but that doesn't look excellent!

Posted

It might be alright although it aint that cheap.

I'd want to give it a very good going over before bidding / handing over any money though. When they are working they are decent enough but they can eat suspension components for fun, DMFs do fail and odd electrical surprises can happen.

I quite like them though, not sure about that one, its more what the ad doesn't say really that would be a worry.

Front and rear bumper inserts should be black btw, only door mouldings were body coloured.

Had loads of these shitheaps. It's about a grand too much and it'll cost you a fortune when it goes wrong (which won't be long) steer well clear. Have a look at VW passats 97- I would sooner have a 13 year old TDi with 200,000 miles than a Mondeo.

The previous owner was a gardener as it comes with "rake adjustment"

Seems a bit pricy and the milage would put me off. And the fact that they explode in a horrid mess of broken flywheel, fuel rail and dead turbo.

T'old man's got a Ghia X petrol one of those. Far superior car in every single way. More reliable, simpler and with chain driven cams. His is a 2.0 litre but that's a better spec than the 2.5 V6. Just as fast but loses out on the torque and noise. Fuel consumption is perfectly acceptable.

Go for the PERV. You won't regret it.

VW Passats of that era are GR10.9 for turning the rear floor area into a paddling pool, having electrical 'issues' that would make even Iveco baulk and are so unreliable you'll need about 18 recovery company cover cards just to nip to the shops and back for the bottles of wine you'll end up drinking every night.

I absolutely despise Mondeos but even they can't be as God awful as a Passat.

I've had 4 Passats [b3 pez, b4 dizzler, b5.5 pez turbo x 2] never had a problem with any of them . Octavia tdi [pd engines] are better though............

I have run petrol Mondeos for 13 years now and have never had a major problem with any of them - I have had Mk1s, Mk2s and now a Mk4. I would be vary of anything without a really good FSH that had 130k on it though, at that mileage you just can't guarantee something major won't go wrong.

Modern diesels seem to attract a lot of hate/fear on here, whether it is justified I don't know, as I have never owned a diesel and don't plan to. It does seem that all the brands you used to able to rely on to provide a good diesel (Pug, Mercedes, VW etc) all generate squeals of hatred now when anyone suggests getting a modern one.

What about a Focus dizzler estate Pog - you seemed happy enough with your last one - or a Volvo V50 (effectively the same thing). Skoda Octavias is the cabbies choice now, maybe that tells you something!

Get a Mongdeo. Not that one, it looks fishy but get another one.

Although I'm a diehard VW fan, Pisshats just can't compare on price. An '03 Passat will set you back twice that, easily, even in unwanted spec so really you could buy two Mondeos if you believe those that say they break easily. A spare, if you like.

My mate swapped a '55 Megane 225 for an '05 Mondeo TDCI Ghia X. Loves it, loves the fact it does twice the MPG and has all the electronic frippery. It is a nice car, he paid way more than that's up for but it's newer, lower mileage etc.

If I was in the market for a family car, a Mondeo would be first choice I reckon. I do like Passats but I just can't justify the massive price surge for a PD TDI and you know it's going to be an ex-fleet car that's been thrashed senseless and then clocked.

My 2000 1.9 TDi PD Passrat was a great car for the 18 months i owned it until i smashed it up. :(

I'm looking at selling the Bora at the moment for a Mondeo, I did take a Octavia II out for a test drive a few weeks ago and really liked it but it just reminded me of a taxi, It's still for sale so I'm still tempted though.

What I really want a Mondeo ST TDCI in Performance Blue though, I've seen a nice one on autotrader today near to me in the right spec and everything but the insurance quotes are over £600 and that scares me like i said in the other thread, And all this talk of DMF failer puts me off Mondeo a bit as well.

This is the Skoda

Up for £5k but I'd get it for £4.5, 86k, 2.0 TDi PD, lovely car to drive, cheap to run etc etc but a bit like a taxi though and I'm worried I'd want to sell it after less then a year as I'll be bored.

Or this.

2005 Mondeo ST TDCi 155, 82k, Sat Nav, Media pack, up for £6200 privately, Bloody lovely and a real keeper but over £600 to insure! What to do?!

Mondeo is certainly the nicer looking and will be a nicer thing to drive

As my wife works for an insurance company we get discount on our car insurance, they have quoted £525 for the Octavia with £100 XS and free breakdown, I'm only paying £350 for the Bora at the moment, but due to my crash they have put it down as my fault which has bumped it right up.

I asked for a quote on the Mondeo but it won't be until Monday before i find out what it will cost, but all the online site are quoting £650, Mind you i remember when i past my test 13 years ago paying over £1500 to insure my Nova 1.2 3rd Party only!

Has any one ever driven or got experience on a ST?, Are they as good as they look?.

Have you shopped about for insurance?

Mrs Pog used to work for Aviva/Norwich Union, and even after 'staff discount' their insurance was still considerably more than in the free market.
