They are indeed a fine pair of shirt collars! (matey's shirt)

there are two Felicity Underhill's showing in the UK - I'd reckon there's a good chance that's the right one - nice boobs for 58!

That's just so wrong.

She will be horrified I reckon.

Susan (21) paid £12.50 for this 1955 Prefect, and bought another less ratfucked one for £9!

This 1961 Minx cost £60 in 1971. It followed a £28 1957 Ford Popular, and a £35 1959 Riley 4/68.

The days when young Women were 'Birds'. Still foxy and cute, but not like the tattoed slappers you see fighting in pubs these days.

There's something here about her having to use the starting handle to get the bastard going - now that's proper! :D

Yeah, what happened to women being "ladies?" Did they finally realise there were no "gentlemen" left or something? Whatever it was, as a sub-species they've certainly lowered their standards. Which the male did decades ago.

*Braces himself for the storm of "Sexist!" from assorted females; completely unjustified as all I'm doing is observing.

Look at the quality of old tat kids were buying back then - and that's the few who were lucky enough to have cars at all at that age. I wouldn't trust most of those bangers (and they really were bangers I reckon) to get me into town and back let alone a hundred miles down the motorway.

No wonder people knew more about cars back then, they had to. There's no way you'd consider a car like that unless you were sure you could fix it twice a week.

And I thought the owner of the Magnette was a bit of skirt as well

Probably the good old days when there was bugger all car credit about so nice new stuff was completely out of reach for yong drivers.

Even so there was still a lot of waste culture going on back then. Go back in time to a 1972 scrapyard and you'll find a lot of cars that were much better than the scrap these Guys and Girls were driving. I guess back then though, cars were so easy to fix that there was a roaring trade in secondhand bits. A mate and I once changed the engine and gearbox in a Mark 1 Escort in two hours with a tea break. About 10 bolts to undo, fuel line, king lead and a couple of other electrical connectors and crane the bugger out.

Susan would get it!

Dunno man, check out the roofrack on her Prefect. She seems a bit OMGWTF RATLOOK for my tastes. She'd be covering your Kadett with stickers and busting out the nitromors before you knew what was happening

So, did Felicity ever reply?

I'm still putting money on her being mortified........... :D

Absolutely how it should be! What will they learn from signing on the dotted for a gleaming new Citroen C1? What did they learn from saving up their hard-earned for an old Prefect? All new drivers should be restricted by law to cars of about 1.0 litre, and a minimum 15 years old. Might bring everyone's insurance down a little too... oh no sorry, we're dealing with the biggest load of gangsters outside of politics and banking.... silly me.

My sister's name is Felicity, but she isn't the one in the article. She has had her share of shite though: Imp, Lada, Charade, Maestro, Metro... (and if she ever finds out, I'm sure she won't thank me for airing that here!)

Thinking back to when i sold a few cars from home 20-25 years ago. I mainly did Minis, early Metros and the odd Escort Mark 3. Girls would come along with their Dads to buy some cheap and cheerful shitter which, to be fair, were always in nice nick.

But 4 years ago I sold my 1997 Ka to a 19 year old and her Dad looked over the car, pronounced it good enough (it was a decent one) and handed over a grand. He said basically that he didn't want her having something new as a 1st car and getting lumbered with credit.

Best of all, I sold a doom blue 518i on the B plate around 8 years ago to a guy buying it for his 18 year old Daughter. It was either that or a W123 Merc as he didn't want her driving a shoebox that would fold up in a crash. She was tidy as well, and I saw her and about 5 mates cruising around in it. A very odd, yet wonderous sight. 5 chicks in an E28.

Coincidentally, I've just won a pile of AA Drive magazines on eBay! :)

I know they are posed but the people in these pictures do look proud of their new found freedom :D

Incidentally, theres a good regular feature on Pistonheads about members' first cars. This week's was about a 1.3 Escort MK2 with newspaper and filler in the pillars. Good read :)

That is simply appalling. What cheapskate bodgery.

I would have used expanding foam.

Then there was an article about rebuilt write offs and a 'comic strip' style story of a guy going for a drive in his brand new Avenger, crashing it and the insurance company selling it to a dodgy salvage broker.

That '56 split screen moggie was identical to the one I sold last year - I really loved it but in terms of morris minors the split screen is not as practical as the 1000 - its just a little bit more cramped and little things like the engine hp and the rear axle and the size of the rear window all make the 1000 a more practical car - I did like it though - the great thing about moggys is how ridiculously cheap and easy to work on they are

Thread resurrection! What happened with facebooking Felicity Underhill? :D

I have that issue with the Hillman Revenger (New year 1975) and the real life rebuild of a front ended Grunter (TGY745M) which oddly isn't on the DVLC computa. Did you see the bit about the Marina 1.8, and 'Axminster newsagent Courtenay Popple' who rallied a 1.8 Coupe? I googled him, and he bacame a bit of a thrusting executive in the 80's and 90's.

Re: Minors. I like the split screen but it would deffo need 1098 running gear. A good one is such a pleasant thing to drive and they're a portion of piss to work on.
