A Few Scrapyard Photos

I had to visit a scrapyard today, unfortunately the chap who I had to see was busy, so the owner suggested that I have a look round for 15 minutes.

First off a mark 3 escort Ghia, minus its engine and a few other bits (It had the steering column cowls missing, remembering Albert Ross' previous topic). It's parked on top of some older BL stuff and the remains of a Sunbeam.

Next an oldish 3 door Range Rover in a 1970s Brown.

I've left the best until last. A not too shabby E registration Rover 213 SE Automatic

Apologies for the shite quality of picture that my phone takes, it even got part of my finger in the last one.

Agreed, Dicky! Unfortunately it's probably a victim of the scrappage ripoff; I'm only guessing here. Looks a little honey though.

Dunno, that ended a long time ago and with the price of scrap the way it is I'm sure it would have been crushed before now if it was scrappage. I suspect by the way it's been put to one side, that it may be for sale, or about to make an appearance on Ebay...

Now I am feeling old, Your upset about a mk3 Escort, I am, wtf, its on a Sunbeam and theres a mgb gt and soft top there, sayin that I loved my mk 3 Escort van in 1981, it was when they had just come out and was fitted with the xr3 engine, Van = No weight = 1600cc xr3 engine forgotten to be detuned by ford = red faced xr3 driver!! Ford soon sorted that out  TEL 276X RIP

Looks like the Sunbeams and Sherpas all came from the same place, sports car specialist or hoarder house clearance I'm guessing?

Mk3 Escort van?

EscortVan-vi.jpg

I had this in 1993. It was supposed to be a "sensible" purchase to replace my beloved Cortina Mk5, 2.0GL auto. I hated the van and flogged it on after a month. It was a very bad time...

Well, almost. They were the 1600 XR3 engine but had the VV carb which contary to popular opinion, was pretty good when it had good diaphragms. The main reason they went well was a-l-m-o-s-t XR3 power (about 5bhp less) and the 1300 box/final drive. I used to look after an X reg 1600 van which as you say, would keep up with an XR3.

Strange to see those Alpines in a yard, I thought those days had long gone. Shades of Practical Classics RIP section circa 1994. Shells don't look too bad tbh (the front of the wings haven't completely rotted away for starters), they must be of use to someone wanting to make a Tiger rep? and that hardtop is probably worth a bit of coin on the 'bay. Sorry, those get me much more interested than the Rover... must be getting old. i'll let you know when those ugly little Rondas start appealing to me (any day now, most probably)

That car and I probably crossed paths when we were younger, as it sports an East Kent registration, which is where I grew up - I reckon it must have been originally supplied by either Barretts of Canterbury, Caffyns of Deal, Arter Brothers or Ash Motor Company, the latter two being two small Austin-Rover dealers situated in villages between Dover and Canterbury, which are both now long-closed.

I thought Arter brothers were still going? when did they pack up?

My mistake. They are still in existence, although I haven't patronised their premises for about 11 years:

I really am cheered by the number of independent rural garages which are still to be found in my old manor :)

I'm afraid not, I was down there last week:
