Just had email from Halfords with 10% OFF everything.

Its a bugger because I bought a tool set last week and could have had an extra £10 off this week.

thought it might be useful to anyone who needs tools or bits.

Could be useful, as I want to replace The Volvo's battery on a precautionary basis at some point before the new year ;)

Where do you live Shep? If you're in or near Cheshire you're welcome to borrow my trade card, you save a small fortune on batteries with that.

I live in Southend, which is a fair old distance from Cheshire :( Thanks for the lovely and kind offer, though :)

I have a friend in Bristol who also has a trade card, so I often borrow it when I'm visiting him. It's saved me a packet in bulbs, brake pads and other bits ;)

My Halfrauds trade card saved me loads when I was rebuilding the Dutton and it works as an ice scraper too..

You'd save a heck of a lot more than 10% if you bought a battery from any other motor factors instead of Halfords

How difficult is it to get a trade card?

I got to a local parts place at the moment and because I buy loads of bits they normally put it through as trade. Halfords are open on sundays etc so would be good to get a card for them.

I'm told they've tightened up a bit now. Got mine from joing a Vauxhall forum (they don't don't offer them anymore unfortunately) but I'd imagine a headed letter (easy enough if you have a printer  ) and maybe a business card and your driving licence.

I daresay that my local Euro Car Parts or Motor Parts Direct will see me right :)

My mate was sort-of in the motor trade when he got his some years ago i.e. he worked for Halfords in Exeter ;)

Go and see Matthew at Shoebury Motor Components in Ness Road. He should be able to sort you out - nice chap.

Perhaps I will. Thanks for the tip :)

That will be the Staff Trade Card that everyone who works for them gets

His manager upgraded it to a non-staff card when he left the company, which was rather kind of him :)

I'm a bit surprised at a pro-Halfords post on an enthusiasts website. Andrew Watts, my local motor factors, has them beat on all consumables and most parts. Beat on both price and stock held. They'd probably need to offer a 30% discount to compete

I find Halfords perfectly fine if I need things like wiper blades, brake pads, lubricants, filters, batteries, cleaning products and non-model-specific bits in a hurry, although their prices aren't awfully keen. I tend to use online suppliers for anything specific to the Volvos and places like Tesco and Wilkinsons for screenwash, car shampoo, etc.

Yeah, I tend to go to the little place in town if I need something between 9 and 4 on a weekday, or 9 and 1 on a Saturday.

Outside those hours (i.e. when I'm not at work either) I use Halfords if it's something I know they stock. Yes I pay more but it beats taking a day off.

I never seem to leave Halfords feeling particularly happy, so I tend to frequent a mixture of local motor factors, or sometimes Motorworld. The only time I really go to Halfords is if I need a very specific brand of tyre shine and even then you've got to run the gauntlet of credit card sales people.

Halfords prices aren't great on general consumables, but I'm always astounded at how much they feel they can get away with charging for accessories - if you went in there and bought a set of trims, floor mats, tax disc holder and a poxy air freshener you'd probably have little change from a ton. I'm convinced the only reason they keep going is because the general public are scared of going in a normal factors and dealing with the strange staff.

This '10% off everything' is a giant con. Crewe Halfords were totally unwilling to offer any discount at all off my weekly purchase of high heeled shoes, rope, bleach and Genesis CD's. My advice is steer well clear of these shysters.

I think you're right. Most motor factor staff are a bit odd, but in common with scrapyard people, if you know what you need and (even better) you know a modicum about cars, they generally play ball :)

I worked for Halfords for several years. The half price stuff is a joke as no one in their right mind would have ever bought it at full cost (although it's not like they are the only company to do this). The Pro range tools are really good but the markup on things like blades and bulbs is outrageous. Not that any of the profit pays for staff - it's minimum wage all the way and when I left they were getting rid of full timers in the assumption they could get part timers who would want to do overtime

The mark up on their wiper blades must be good, £16 retail for a set, £5.30 with the card.

I only buy air fresheners from there generally, although I bought a can of weld through primer the other week. TBH, my local motor factors are so much cheaper that a trade card is'nt worth the bother.

I'd quite like a ratchet spanner set after changing the thermostat on a SAAB 9000.

What is the quality of their tools and equipment like? average or useless Chinese crap?

The only item I've bought there is a can of degreaser.

Posted

Standard stuff is ok..... the Pro stuff gets replaced if you bust it, it's meant to be fantastic quality but I'm never rich enough to splash.

I find their tools are good, their paint is good - the local factor's stopped doing the Upol stuff due to VOC rules - but their wipers are overpriced...

The Pro tools are good, suspect they could be provided by some company like Drapers. Paint is good, and their batteries are overpriced too.

Pro tools are quality stuff. There was a rumour they are made by the same people who make Snap-On but it seems to depend on whom you believe.

I quite like Halfords, easy/convenient and open when others aren't. Prefer local motor factors as they're cheaper and really know their stuff but Halfords aren't all bad.

The Halfords stuff is supposed to be from "Brit tool" but I read a few things saying they'd changed them recently and the newer stuff wasn't as good.

I've the big Pro set from a few years ago (seems to have more bits in it now rather than just sockets) and a set of ratchet spanners, breaker bars and haven't had any problems with anything.

The main ratchet is a bit worn but that's just from hitting it with hammers etc.
