MOT Every 2 Years

Just seen this on Auto Express http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoe ... ngent.html Yes I know normally reason to ignore it but it's not the first time I've read this. Basically they want an MOT every 2 years and new cars won't need one until their 4th birthday.

So great, modern cars are more reliable anyway so shouldn't suffer major problems in that time, so saves money right? Well in my opinion it would be a disaster. How many people even bother with things like headlight bulbs, brake pads and tyres until MOT time? You'll simply have more cars being driven in a dangerous unroadworthy condition. If anything, it should be like New Zealand and be every 6 months.

Thoughts?

theres too many deathraps and cyclops' on the road as it is, yearly is the safest.

i bet the owners of certain motor linked establishment would lose millions too, mr kwik fit would bung someone a few bob to make it stay yearly

Christ no, most people already treat cars like a toaster/fridge/generic white good without this. Be a disaster. At least this way they get a basic safety check once a year.

I'm with you on that one NC, stick with annual testing, but have a "half=test", with "time to fix, no restrictions unless dangerous kind of things, no need for re-examination" 6 monthly inspection for older (not restored) vehicles. I know it sounds a bit half arsed, but on the Isle of Man, the system of no MOTs works well, as if you get randomly called in and your motor is found to be a piece of shit, they fine you in a big "I'll have your lunch money" stylee. It works, because they know the score. Too many people on the roads these days would sooner spend their money on the latest CD or lippy rather than fix the blown bulb or even fill up the washers, "cos it's going in for MOT in 9 months, innit" therefore they need to do fuck all about it.

Yeah. Keep it annual, and the 6 monther should tighten things up. Obviously restored classics would be exempt from the 6 monther, as the annual report would state it had fresh panels, paint, new chassis etc, thereby removing the need to do a bi-annual corrosion check, reserve that for the 1997 Mondeos etc.........

Exactly... normally its the MOT man that tells them that they need to get something else/it needs fixing. It'll be very dangerous if they change it.

There was a similar review in 2008. The outcome then was to leave it as it is at 311 frequency.

What has changed in two years, except the colour of the government.

I think the belief is that the general public would have their vehicle serviced properly on the intervening year to ensure standards are maintained. Some hope :roll:

6 monthly inspection for older (not restored) vehicles..

I think we have all seen "restored" vehicles that aren't fit for much more than cubing. What is restored? Resprayed on the cheap or a ground up rebuild by a fastidious profesional?

i was quite suprised at the state of a lot of shitters that i saw in the UK of recent..and as Negative said..we ve got to MOT every 6 months here in NZ..so i take pride in the Viva as it sails thru them everytime..and the check up naturally finds any wobbly bits u then have to sort out..

Is it true that in N.Z you don't need insurance?

Ah, well the ANNUAL inspection would decide on the frequency of the next inspection. If corrosion was advised on THAT test, then the 6 monther

(strangely valid for 12 months unless it should fail the 6 monther, due to the advice work not being sorted, or poorly repaired, then it would be reduced, or indeed a no-show would instantly revoke it) would be activated, with postal reminder. If no serious advice, then a 12 monther would be in force. THe system would take 12-18 moths to firm up, but it would be worth it. But only for older vehicles.

yeah thats true..but our Road Tax goes to Accident Compensation Corporation..so they pick up the bill when uve been smashed up..tho if u wipe some one out without insurance..u have to pay for their car

I can not see any reason why you would halve the frequency. On the radio they said it was to bring our system more in line with the european one. Is that it? Thats the entire justification? It seems mental, if you've already got a good system why muck about with it? I doubt very much whether any of the popular mythical 'faceless Brussels EU bureaucrats' are forcing it on the UK either. it just seems like fiddling for the sake of it. As for the cost of it, £40-£50 once a year for a registered government-trained technician to check your car out to a universal standard seems like a fuggin bargain to me. As if theres no other problems need looking at

Out here there are no MOT type safety inspections, just an emissions test every two years. The only "inspection" done at that point is just to make sure that all the glass is intact. There are some properly dangerous cars wobbling around the roads in AZ....

Yes. People get along just fine and in fact it's very handy simply being able to jump in a car and drive it. Since it's so cheap (cost me around £50) about 90% have it anyway

Another factor here is..u buy an un-MOT'd car..take it in for inspection..and then legally u have 28 days to get the problems sorted out..so u can still hoon around it with no CVs and worn out ball joints..

You wont believe how many people actually think the MOT is actually also an annual service. They dont seem to understand that an MOT is merely a yearly (see what I dont there!) check up. They dont understand that nothing will changed during the MOT, no blubs, no oil, no filters, nothing will changed unless you ask them for a seperate service.

I hear this all the time. Was saying that a lot of people will have been caught out with this weather as they will not have prepped their car for winter with the right antifreeze mix etc, when a girl at work said 'i will be okay as my car has its MOT last week'...........

I don't think it should be changed. Probably wont be. Just a bit of headline grabbing.
