Out of interest. What is the blue car with what looks like a dent in the back in this photo?

Is it just because the cars dated much more quickly then (not helped I suppose by BL and co keeping designs from the 60's pretty much unchanged til the 80's) or was it that back in the 80's or 90's (when the pics appear to have been snapped) there were much more older cars knocking about, and a wider spread of ages of car than there is today, on the street view pics?

Apologies if that doesn't make sense, I can't work out how to word my question

I would guess that most of these places were not really very wel-off areas so there were a few more older cars knocking around, and back then every car maker wasn't offering the 'amazing' finance schemes you get now days that encourage everyone to buy a NEW car.

also i'd guess a lot of the cars in the street view pics are probably knocking on for 5-8 years old but to us lot they still look like NEW cars. You're right though, there are several cars that must be at least 10 years old in the old shots.

Anyway, I've spent aaaaaages on this site now, I really do love tower blocks. I now have anew desktop wallpaper for every day of the week. I love how every photo seems to have been taken on a really murky cloudy day, really adds to the atmosphere

Thanks for the extra work guys! It's amazing just how little some of these places have changed in over 20 years. I can't wait to be able to compare the newer Street View images again in 20 years time. :D

As others have suggested this thread is pure class. Loving the 'then and now' pictures, not a great deal of difference in many it would seem.

My memory of the 70s and 80s is that the stages in a car's life (new, nearly new, starting to look tired, banger, scrap) lasted about half the time and at half the mileage of a typical 1990s car. We tended to buy cars at six years old and scrap them after four years' worth of hookey MOTs- . My first (legal) car in 1987 was an eight year old £170 Chrysler Sunbeam and I remember getting parts from younger cars in the scrapyard. Volvo achieved their reputation for longevity by making cars that would last for 12-15 years.

Obviously some cars fared better than others, or there would be no examples left, but that was pretty much the lifespan of cars that got average TLC and average use.

Nice to see the tower blocks have aged so gracefully............................

I've just looked at all the Aberdeen ones.

All still standing.

Guess what I'm going to be taking pictures of this weekend...

There aren't any old photos of Aberdeen in that lot though are there? Just 'info'.

Aberdeen has got loads of tower blocks in large, open areas right by the sea. Scotland certainly knew how to build (many, many) tower blocks. :D

Just looking at another one local to me.

There are a couple of old Rovers in this pic. I nearly bought a house up this road about 7 years ago. It looked really nice, thou house was ex council and well built. Just before i put in an offer i went for one last look around and there was a burnt out 'gangsta' Merc 500SL outside and as I came out of the house a stray dog was having a shit on the drive. Nice. No offer. And then someone drove in the back of my Xantia at the roundabout up the road.

This was a good photo.

I love this photo simply because of the primered wing on the Datsun :D This is how the world looked when I was 10/11 or so. I suppose in a way its quite nice to know that some of it hasn't changed all that much.

Some great pics here, my Grandad lived in Bancroft court in Leeds, I remember as kid taking a picture of the car park when my mums Chevette was parked up (APPROX 1980). I couldnt see a picture of the place on the site but it was mentioned. Next time i'm at my mums i'll try and get a copy of the picture..

I'd love to see some period pics of Wyndham Court in Southampton, preferably featuring busy executives in Austin 3-litres and Zodiacs
