Long time lurker, first time poster!

I,ve been visiting this site for more than a year after stumbling over it by accident, but I never really thought about actually posting until today (off work due to the snow, whoopee!)

I only really realised in the last couple of years that I was an autoshiter when I looked at the type of cars that I had, I used to have various gti golfs, a Rallye (wish I still had it) and finally a R32 (an excellent car which had just the right level of "kit" for me + an exhaust note do die for) but which had the bad habit of attracting every knob-end in the world who fancied a "race".

Reality bit about 3 years ago when I finally decided to get a mortgage so it had to go leaving me with my second car which became my daily, which is a mk1 jetta which I bought of one of our customers at my work (I work in a vw dealer) who was stopping driving due to his health.

After driving it through two winters I realised I was basically killing it so I bought an old polo from a friend last year and it bore the brunt of last winter (at the cost of most of its bodywork unfortunately!) and despite its looks was a great car, 100% reliable and fairly quick for a 1.4.

Sadly during the summer it was getting very ratty (real rat-look, ha!) and was going to need a fair bit of work for its mot but luckily our managing director was retiring and had promised that I could get his old audi 80 diesel (much to the disgust of our sales department who had hoped to "scrappage" it).

I dont have any pics yet of the car clean but it is in very good condition and has only covered 87000 miles and obviously has a full history, not bad for £200!

Now for the all important pics!(if i got the uploading right that is!)

Welcome, sounds like you'll fit in well. Is the Jetta on mk2 14" steels?

Posted

Welcome along. Please don't mention Passats.

Yes it is on mk2 steel wheels, I did have it running on 15"bbs alloys last year (along with coilovers - now removed!) it looked good but the ride quality was a joke plus I think it suits style of the car - I am someone else who doesnt get the whole "rat-look" fad which is sweeping through the whole vw scene at the moment - I get the feeling that at some point in the near future we will be seing a lot of these cars being put back to stock, I myself prefer period add-ons that add on to the original spec of the car, not junk like roofracks!

Thank God for that, I thought that I was the only person who ran VW's & thought that.

That looks well nice. Welcome along. Probably attracts a lot of attention in VW circles as its not rat look.

Welcome!

The Jetta looks in beautiful condition and the colour suits it. I very much like the steelies as well :D

Hello!, Your Jetta is stunning, what a great looking car, Now if that one and a "rat look" version of it was parked side by side in a car park I'd know which one I'd be fighting to get to. 8)

Here's another one of your photos I've took the liberty of posting for you!

Thanks for posting the picsfor me , I WILL work out what i'm doing wrong so that I can post them myself, plus i must get a better pic of the audi when its clean!

Welcome, mh! Tidy little Jetta you have there, I'm always pleased to see a 27-year-old car survive so well.

Posted

well it does have some rot spots but it doesnt look to bad for its years! plus driving it takes me back to my first car, a mk1 golf 1100 GL, a car which nowadays would have been worth a small fortune (going by the price of certain vw's) it is really a step back in time when you get behind the wheel of it - manual choke, 4 - speed box and a carburettor of all things!

Welcome! My brother's also into his VW's but seems to be happily keeping away from the 'distressed' rat-look scene.

Anyway, have a couple of pics of a Mk1 Jetta I spotted a few weeks ago in a residential are of Blackpool - it shows that it lives a couple of minutes walk from the seafront!

Any ideas why it has a different grille? Is it just a higher spec model or have I just discovered some VW holy grail item?

Posted

no, mine used to have exactly same grille but I "upgraded" mine with a Hella accesory grille (e-bay!) which i had to modify to accept lamps from an old mk1 GTI grille - Makes it so much better at night than the original headlamps!
