RWD Peugeot engine options for Pete

Not feeling too motivated today so I thought I'd put some info together for Pete.

Most the 504/604 engine swapping seems to go on in Australia where older pugs are popular and V8 iron is available.

So V8s that I have heard of in 504s and 604s:-

Rover 3500

Chevy small block

Leyland P76

Holden V8

This all seems very GM centric as the P76 is a derivative of the Rover V8 is a derivative of some GM boat shite :D n'est-ce pas?

I suppose that would be because the 604 auto has a GM 3 speed auto transmission and so finding a suitable bell housing to fit a GM engine would be easy.

But what if you have a manual RWD pug?

The 504 and some 505s had the BA7 gearbox and that will just explode if you put V8 power on it. What you need is a BA10 gearbox that all V6 pugs and I think some 505 GTIs came with, as well as the turbo diesels (normally aspirated diesels had the BA7).

The BA10 was also fitted to the Jeep Cherokee so I suppose that if you have yourself a BA10 then you can buy one of these

or maybe there's a better way....

You should also be aware that V6 right hand drive cars had a different bell housing to the left hand drive ones with the starter motor on the other side. The RHD ones are like rocking horse poo because it seems so many Aussie hot rodders want them.

Lastly early BA10 gearboxes had different input shaft splines on them to later ones. Clutches for early ones are now unobtainable so take care about that.

The other option you have is to keep it PRV.

The bottom end of the PRV is actually incredibly strong and can take some turbo charging (a la Renault 25 etc).

The top end has lubrication problems though.

All Peugeot sourced PRVs have rocker/cam lub problems, these engines are the same as Volvoist B27 and B28 engines and Peugeot put them in 604s and 505s.

These are all known as oddfire engines because they are a 90 degree V6 so the gap between bangs is uneven. For this reason my 604 has two contact breakers, a double contact rotor arm and two coils. Volvo used electronics.

Only early 604s got carbs and you can read about them in the Renault 30 Haynes manual.

The rest got fuel injection.

The most robust PRV engines though are the evenfire engines, most commonly available as the Volvo B280. These have offset crank pins to give a normal 6 cyl smoothness. The hottest camshaft is the B280E variant.

The Volvo engines bolt straight into a 604 and the B280 doesn't eat it's camshafts/rockers either.

However you can go bigger.

The Eagle Premier/Dodge Monaco came with a 3 litre PRV. It has low emissions cams, and the bottom crankcase won't go into a Peugeot because it's a front wheel drive transverse variant. What you do is fit the B280 camshafts and the bottom half of the crank case from any RWD PRV and then it goes into the 504/604/505 to make a 3 litre PRV. Also there was a 3 litre PRV in the Peugeot 605 Cit XM which is maybe the same engine? Anyway 165bhp as standard.

I think that these evenfire PRVs all got EFI multipoint injection so you can go megasquirt as well.

But you can go 24 valve as well.

There was a front wheel drive PRV 24 valve and I think it has fitted to early 605 and XM. Careful though because a new nonPRV V6 came out replacing the PRV and it won't fit in a RWD pug. The PRV 24 valve had 200bhp as standard but like the Dodge version you have to swap the lower crank case (not a problem if you are taking an older PRV engine out).

The ultimate PRVs I have heard of are turbo charged and breathing LPG (because it's high octane allows more boost) and I think 300bhp is obtainable.

Most of this info comes from the aussiefrogs forum and I hope it's correct.

There seems to be some PRV tuning going on in Delorean circles.

What about a SD1 Diesel, looks the ideal job to me... as seen here

In that case the VM diesel from a Cherokee will fit. And as a bonus for Pete, don't they have more cylinder heads than a V8

Mr NutJob, you're a legend. Many thanks for that.

I didn't realise they used a GM 3 speed. That is splendid news, and it means there are loads of nice engine options..

I've also been looking at turbocharging the V6. As loads of R25 turbos have died for their gearboxes I wonder how hard it would be to find an engine from one.

Found a vid of a Rover powered 504 earlier, that looked like fun but I'm probably going for something other than the Rover lump.

Chevy V8 could be the answer as it'll be easy finding an engine and box.

Corsa 1.0? Lol. Tw@s.

well I'm not so sure now...

My early Peugeot factory documentation says that the 604 has a GM 3 speed (it says GM 407 with GM torque converter)

The 505 Haynes manual says the 505 had ZF 3HP22 or 4HP22 transmission.

So I would say that a later 604 could easily have a ZF transmission or a GM one. Something you would need to check, but I suppose it can be swapped as well.

In either case the ID plate is near the selector lever on the transmission, passenger side of the car.

that would be the 2.5 turbo diesel auto which I don't think was sold in the UK

all of the diesels I have seen are 2.3. Maybe they did actually put a 2.5 in the 604 but I don't think they sold them in the UK

the 505 came with a 2.5 turbo diesel and the ZF 4HP20

The only petrol engines (and therefore the only autos in the UK) were 2.7 and 2.8

Hmm. Not much torque capacity in the GM ones either.

I'll have to investigate more. I'm gonna try and go see it on Saturday if I get the chance.

I've been sent photos of it, the sills are utterly shagged (quelle surprise) but otherwise it looks rather nice akchewelly. Original plates etc.

Have you not just got rid of something with shagged sills?

It's a 604 STi (indeed).

Yes, I've just got rid of something with shagged sills and I'm considering buying something with shagged sills and unobtanium bits.

Arghh. I don't know what to do. The SD1 has now left the building, I've found a 604 for sale, I've never had a 604, and it'd be another one off the list of things I've always wanted to own. As there are only 12 604s on the road in the UK, I'm not likely to find another in a hurry.
