There is talk of a Mk1 Granada round here, and it's many years since I owned one. Can any of you more technical bods think of anything that might be a dealbreaker on a 1972 GXL with the 2.5 Essex and manual box? My old one was a 3.0 GL auto, and we parted on bad terms after it ate its third set of head gaskets inside a year.

Informed opinion welcome...

The 2.5 Essex lump is a bit shit, but it should be reliable enough.

I'd be looking for rot, front subframe bushes, prop doughnut, rear cv joints and that's about it really.

Tough as old boots.

well, i dont know about a deal breaker, but if it has a type9 then the bellhousing (formoco no. 72GB7505LA)is worth a ton - 150 on its own

and the 2.5 (if running okay) is in demand by some scimitar GT owners

the 2.5 isnt that shit, just not as torque-y as the 3 litre

Thanks guys, pretty much confirmed what I already thought. Propshaft doughnut was the first job I had to do on my first Granny!

My opinion is not informed, but I say buy it whatever happens. If it's cheap that is. even if you park it up for a while and do bugger-all to it, it's not like it's going to rot away in front of your eyes is it? It's a bloody Mk1 Granny FFS, how much cooler can a car be?
