I R HOMELESS

I'm going to be abandoning the Peterborough area soon and be based in Crewe full-time. WHATEVER, but the main issue with this is I will no longer have a garage! This is causing me to sleep badly and have visions of future rows with Mrs_Bol as I fill the kitchen sink with diesel and clean Rover 220 engine parts in it. It also means ebay becomes a big shop window which I can only look through as moths fly out of my empty pockets, beano-style. TURMOIL

Obv this situation is not sustainable so I have gotta find a garage to tinker in. I have a lead on one possibility through the intranet at my wife's work, but I havent got mega faith in it coming off TBH. I have also started hassling the council about a lock-up, although I am aware of the limitations of those things. I have also boshed up some notices in nearby supermarkets and will have a look at putting somethign in the Crewe paper. Has anyone else got any tips for finding a workshop?

I am gonna keep my eyes open for some shonky looking sheds and units round and about that could be rented, affordable garage space is pretty rare i suspect so you have to put in some effort to find it.

Here is a pic of my old Fiat 130 coming out of the garage (in Altrincham) in which it lived for about 5 years, the garage cost about £50 a month I think!!! Too much for a poxy lock up.

Its difficult. I'm trying to find some new storage space for our business, and unless you want to rent a warehouse then finding small yet decent, secure space at a sensible price is an utter pain in the arse.

i just hired 2 garages of our local council

£9 a week each. about a maestro and a half in length, and a maestro and a quarter across.

(sorry for the measurement, its all i have in it at the moment!)

I have the same problem, I have the use of a large shed that is open to the elements and no electricity, but units up here are horrendously expensive....try Farmers union paper maybe?

Yeah, I hire a couple of garages off the council about £8 a week. It's not ideal cos they're so narrow and there's always broken glass and crap around them cos of the local plebs hanging about.

They have all been recently refurbished though with new doors and whatnot. They are about half hour walk from where I live which is not too bad.

Also, one of the garages next to mine is owned by an old bloke who does up old motorbikes. My heart sinks if he is there cos he keeps me talking about old bike stuff that I'm simply not interested in...I dont go on at him about Simcas and Talbots! :(

Thanks to Trigger's Retro Roadtests, a Maestro is 158"/4013.2mm long by 66"/1676.4mm wide.

That makes your garage approx 6meters/19.5' by 2meters/7.5'.

That made me LOL

1.5Maestros Long by 1.25Maestros wide is now 6 Meters long and 2 Meters wide.

Mr B,

I put an ad on Gumtree for a workshop stating it would be for hobby use, forgot all about it and got a call 2 weeks later from a farmer who had a former chicken shed to rent. Went for a look not expecting much, found it measured 20' x 40' with power, water, insulated, 25 mins from home £150 p.m. Guy in there before me had been building rally cars so its was clean & tidy, last chicken must have moved out some time ago. 8) Been there nearly 2 years now.

Guy in the shed next to mine is paying more for the same size because hes making decent £££'s spraying whiz bang Jap rocket stuff.

So is this the new Autoshite Standardised unit of car measurement then?

I'll keep an eye out for something on my travels just in case.

I was using Gumtree a couple of years ago to try and find somewhere. Difficult to find something that will suit just one person though there might be more in a more rural area than North London. Torsten came to my rescue in the end.

Try asking some mechanics or anyone else who has an industrial unit, some of them end up with places too big for their needs and you might be able to have a bit.

If you're willing to travel to Birkenhead, my mate has a 4 car garage for 80 quid a week. It's got electric and water and I think it's got a shower as well. It's all behind steel roller shutters and the garage is penned in behind a big steel gate. I was going to move in, but can't afford it on my own. It's empty and ready to be let out. It was used by a sprayer, so it's obviously clean.

Breck Pl in the middle. ;)

Gah! I know exactly how you feel Mr Bol. Thats happening to me.

You could try a few sites like www.parklet.co.uk as sometimes those who have garages from the council will sub-let them.

If you dont a bit of a drive you could try neighbouring councils. Some councils are always trying to let refurbed garages like Telford who I regsitered and got a garage with, whereas Brum Clowncil put your name down and sit on there arses. Dudley Council wouldnt let me register as I am not a resident. Alternatively, ask some mates and work colleagues.

My one garage in Telford I rented off the clowncil for about £15 fortnightly which is slightly smaller than the Sterling I've got parked in there, I had to take the rear bumper off.

I got a bit lucky with my 2nd garage which I am sub-letting off a mate for £20 a month. My other Sterling fits in there no problem as its quite deep and located on a private estate.

Good luck in your search.

The fella I got my Porka from owns a farm with barns and stuff. The mum in law works with his wife, I can ask to see if hes got any space to let cheap. Hes near Shavington too, IIRC.
