Nicue, the pinnacle of development of the 50s and 60s compact jaguars.

I had one back in 2003 but sadly it was a spares car for an S Type I was rebuilding.

Question for you if that was a Jag it would be a MK10 I think ? So what is its Daimler name.....

No, actually.Mk 10 was bigger. This is Daimler’s equivalent to an S type, which was basically a test mule for the XJ6

It would be a Jaguar 420 which was pretty much identical apart from badges and grille and I recall the leather seats in the Daimler had a pinhole pattern in them compared to the jaguar version.  The daimler version was the Daimler Sovereign.

On the one I had the boot number plate plinth was a jaguar one and the manufacturers just drilled two holes through the jaguar logo and fitted a Daimler one over it bolted on from the back.

The 420 is different to the 420G which was a much larger car, basically a MK10 jag with some extea chrome trim and a few other changes.

Well that fills a gap in my Jag knowledge, I didn't realise that there was a model between the S type and Xj6, I have learnt a thing!

In true british motor industry fashion the MK2, S-Type and 420 were all in production at the same time, then in 1968 the XJ6 came out and they were gradually phased out until 69 (I think) when production stopped.

The S-Type and 420 are very similar and it does seem odd that they kept two very similar cars in production at the same time.

Happy to say I’ve driven a Jaguar 420 Sovereign manual. It was great, just had to remember the switch for the electric choke.

My friend and neighbour has trusted me to drive various cars to shows for him, when he had two car entries, including the 420, XJ40 Daimler and series 2 XJ6 manual.
