Little update

Adjusted the clutch cable and can now engage and disengage the gearbox. Trialled it worked by clutching in and out and lt allowing the car to roll down my drive. Was a pain pushing it back up the incline to clear the garage door though....

Received a package from @BobG all the way from Ohio!! (huge thank you) it included a tubular manifold and modified intake manifold. The exhaust is already sat in place the inlet needs a tweak to work but all looks good so far and if I can make it work sorts the issue of the carb sitting flat.

Refitted the rear fuel tank cover/panel and started wiring things up. Need to find a location for the temp sensor and remake a connection for the oil switch but everything else is in place.

Rad panel is swung in too so can crack on with the cooling side of things.

Looking good now. Will need to take a look at the exhaust and how i want to make/route that. Very tempted to go with a sideways mounts "devil" type setup

Thanks for reading

New cable in, ball ache on the drive tbh. Defo need a lottery win so I can have a workshop with a ramp..

Also fitted the new front badge, happy with that bit of it 😀

Slipped with a drill too and chewed up the side of my finger, smarts a little but I'll live 👍🏼

JB Weld and beer can is the kind of thing I think we've all done. Nothing wrong with that as you say, particularly if the tank's not a keeper long term. I'm just eager to see the 8 in motion, driven by the new powerplant!

Update with some pics (Videos to follow in a week or 2 hopefully, make sure you watch  ) bit too wet to check my fuel tank repair but not wet enough to stop me tinkering.

Renault R8S Weber carb turned up, came with the bracket, spring and arms for the throttle actuation so that's great  OEM so should all work fine on this.

Remember when I plugged and re drilled the inlet manifold to suit the r5 weber carb I had?? shouldn't have done that.... I've had to undo that work and spent 2 hours this evening repairing my handywork and getting the manifold ready for redrilling (again). The holes taken out to 10.2mm, tapped to m12 and then I made m12 plugs out of some 12mm aluminium bar. Arms are aching a little bit now. gave them a tight fit thread and used some Loctite to keep them in situ, followed with a quick hit with a flap wheel to take the tops off and then hit with the drill and flap wheel.

All being well (and dry) tomorrow should see the manifold redrilled and tapped and the manifold in place, and hopefully a test of the fuel tank

marked up, drilled and tapped some holes to m8, then made a pair of studs and we have a carb in place. Throttle cable is a touch short so I have ordered some internally threaded bar to extend the m6 end of the throttle cable (id of made that too if I had something to make it from)

All being well, by the end of the week I should have the exhaust parts here to tack something together. I'm still yet to check the fuel tank though....

Another quick afternoon/evening update. Throttle cable extended and fitted, yet to test but being oem I'm expecting/hopeful it will work. I've also popped the fuel that I took out back in. No leaks that I can see so dropped the car back down with a jug underneath so I can check again tomorrow 🤞🏻

And I think we are onto a winner 😁 no leaks from the tank so rear panel back on. Throttle cable linked up and checked, aaaaannnnnnnnd we have full actuation of both throttle plates 💪🏻 I've fitted up the water hoses and put a little bit of antifreeze in. Sucked through some petrol and we have a quick rough idle. Parts for the exhaust are also here so this weekends job should be getting that roughed out. I should then be able to run the car up without offending everyone.

And we are very close to being able to run up. I'm roughly measuring 2.5meters from head to tip. I decided to go the opposite way to most I've seen and then back on itself and then across the back of the car. Not going to look to closely at the welding, it will do, and with the exhaust wrap on it wont be seen. V-band connection to the manifold and then mounted the box to the engine brace so the whole thing moves as one and solid. Now its 2 bolts to drop the whole thing off.

cant wait to hear what it sounds like :D

Managed to get an air filter setup sorted. Opted for a ramair carb filter with a blank base plate. Cut it to suit the carb and bish bash bosh it's on.

Bled the heater matrix the gave it a few more miles. All seems good so far. I do have an oil leak from the fuel pump so may need to knock up a couple of new gaskets.

When given a prod it'll step out when pulling away and has a new found ability to accelerate up hill! Still chuffed.

I'm not going to lie, today probably wasn't the best day to do a decent test drive. I get up and leave the house by 5.25am, it's dark, today was very cold and the car is untested... apart from having a bit of a slide on a corner and having ice on the inside, it was great 😁 no major issues to report, one headlight has died and I think it needs another bleed as the heater doesn't seem as good as it was but 40 miles complete 💪🏻

The return home was an eye opener though, same corner I had a little fun on, there one car on its roof and another facing the wrong way in the hedge completely stoved in.....

Pretty decent afternoon down at my mates rollers. Rolled in with a 64 bhp pull and got better from there. Did a few runs to check fuelling and then spent an hour doing pulls whilst adjusting the dizzy. We were actually backing the timing off when we started seeing the number climb. WE didnt have a proper timing mark to go from so made one with some paint and adjusted from that point. Ideally I need to get a proper TDC 0deg mark on the pulley and cam cover. Took 18 degrees out of it and gained 10bhp! Car behaved really well whilst there until the end where it gained a hole in the power low down and top end started dropping. We locked it a the last good timing value that got good power and left it at that.

On the way home the hole/flat spot got bigger and then after a detour to the shops the car promptly stopped and wouldn't spark. Coil was too hot to touch so I think its dead, pretty sure it was a Chinese knock off that I had kicking around. Need to get a genuine Bosch or Lucas one in there I think. Will be interesting to see if it runs sweet again with a new one on.

Anyway, ditched the car, went home and got some tools, 30 min later when I returned it ran but only just, but good enough to get me quarter of a mile through the town and onto my drive ready for some investigation tomorrow.

Ill have a video together for you in the next few days (y)
