MSN Cars strikes again

Not enough to make you throw your shoe at the computer this time, but the "taking it to extremes" journalism (Clarkson does it ok in small doses) that's just lazy.

This time, a test of a Ginetta G40

It's a new track car that Ginetta will adapt for the road, it's got 150bhp and weighs 850kg (same as a Golf Mk1?) so should go a bit. Our friends at MSN say

0-62mph in 6.5 seconds, top speed 140mph

Not bad then, a pretty quick car by today's standards. He talks about it handling like a racing car and a few other things, but what's this...?

most hot hatches will leave it for dead

Leave it for dead? Have I missed out that 7 out of 10 hot hatches can do 0-60 in 5 seconds or less?

Can you spout any old drivel on a fairly high-profile website? As long as you've got a strong opinion, does informing people come second?

If that's the only thing that's important, can you at least try and be entertaining whilst you do it?

I'll give you five english pounds for every article on MSN Motors that's well written, accurate and informative. And doesn't just rehash the idea that any car that sold well, was cheap and popular, but is more than 5 years old is crap.

No, you're right. Most hot hatches are in the 7- to 9-second to sixty bracket and that's where they'll stay thanks to manufacturers insistence on just upping power levels through the front wheels and bolting on a few more spoilers.

Plus I'd wager that if I were in, say, a Clio Cup and went into a corner at speed behind a Ginetta, he'd be at home making beans on toast before I'd got decent power down. Hot hatches are lardy these days, this is a frikkin' racing car.

MSN Motors = The Beano, for adults.

I only ever see MSN Car's 'churnalism' when people post links on autoshite.

Cheers guys!

Didn't the original Lotus Seven have a Ford sidevalve engine? It's not like you need to break the sound barrier to have fun - not that the Ginetta is a slow car in any way.

Well said sir! My three (rear-engined) Fiat 500s were a barrel of fun every time I drove them. OK, so was my MG Maestro, but it's a different kind of fun. Here in Cyprus I have a Capri 1600GT... why, when they made a 3-litre? Well first, the 1600 is completely entertaining enough on these Alpine roads where I live, and second: if I held out for a 3-litre I'd still be waiting, and missing out big-time.

What a load of horse shite, it doesraise a serious question though... what about the people that read these articles and take them to be THE word on motoring?

It's written by wankers, for wankers to take seriously.

I read it for a laugh because it's so utterly piss poor.

If you read MSN motors, dont come on here complaining about what a load of shit it is, you knew that before you even clicked on the link. Thats like drinking a load of cat piss, then complaining (on a pukka forum about drinks) that it tasted poor and was of lousy nutritional value.

Good point, well made

Thanks Guys. I was blissfully unaware of MSN (I thought it was an acronym for Main Stream News!) but now I know.

Explains the previously inexplicable comments about everything from the ginetta to the cortina of "yeah, but a modern hot hatch will see it off (innit, m8, ykt)" when I know for a fact that under a ton and over 130bhp is pretty good at losing everything. Hell, I once managed to "see off" a saxo VTR with a chevanne because he slowed down for corners and I wouldn't.
