Why would he need to do that?

You don’t need to answer that it’s fine.

I’d the technology was so clever, it could work out what percentage of a PHEV’s mileage was done on electricity. Obviously it can’t, as we have the “ oh , just make it half”.

The gov have obvs tried to keep things simple, the more complexity you introduce the more difficult and expensive it is to actually implement.  Yes perhaps that info is available, is it accessible on all Phevs? Is there a common standard?  If not, would legislation need to be passed to create a need for a standard? How long would it take for a Mot tester to fart around with a laptop trying to download the data?  What would be the cost of that time?  What if the obd port is non functional?

yes it is a fudge but a reasonable one and given phev drivers are incentivised to do as many miles as poss on electric for many owners it will be to their advantage.

Gas and electric smart meters all pop back readings every few minutes to some cloud server somewhere, telling our chosen supplier how much to bill us. Thanks to mesh options you can even put meters where they can’t connect directly to the magic cloud, but can connect to another meter that can.

I appreciate that cars do more around slightly* more than my house, but the basic infrastructure for measuring units used and reporting it exists on a mass scale, doesn’t seem a stretch to apply it to cars, or to have an account with a monthly averaged direct debit to cover the years motoring just like your other metered services.

Electric cars were supposed to give cheaper mileage costs to encourage people to take the plunge. Pretty much everyone who fancies doing this has now done it, so the rate per mile can go up. People will whinge, but assuming you have a reasonable charging arrangement (like solar!) then there is a massive gap between current price per mile and the equivalent proper car costs (don’t worry, just trolling, I love electric cars).

We should really be worrying about what’s next as this move shows the tempting carrot phase of moving us all to electric is over, so what’s the stick going to look like. I suspect it’s ever more expensive VED rates or price per mile if it ends up on all vehicles to price combustion engines off the road.

Don’t worry about the values of your PHEVs, we all know about this stuff, but we are quite special* and 99% of future purchasers will have no idea of the ramifications of it, or care. If you’re that worried you’ve got at least 3 years now in which to bail out……

I was thinking more along the lines of the saps who live three or more stories up and dangling an extension lead out of a window isn't an option!

Same for terraced houses.

I'm sure I've got a Tapley Aviatrics Gallons Gone meter stashed away somewhere. I bet if I say it's linked to the cloud and is AI driven, I'll win the tender to supply the UK, once I've scratched out the identifying marks.

G&Ts all round!

Three years time was just about when I’d want to get rid.

I thought of an invention where you had a retractable charging lead built into the kerb stone. You could fit it then tarmac over the supply lead back up to the house.

you csn get a strip that looks like the old cast iron drains used to take rainwater from houses to the gulley, the charge cable then just pushes in it. Problems are how do you reserve the space outside your house, and as yet planning hasn't got guidance on such ideas. (probably needs a dozen govenment quagos made up of well paid civil servants/old (private) school chums to talk about it for 5 years!).
