Retro Rides Gathering - which shiteists are going?

Just curious who is going to the RR Gathering in a week or so.

I am, in the Sprinter.

Who else?

Not this time. I can't resist the track time and while beating Volvo Amazons is fun, it always seems to result in a broken gearbox not long afterwards...

Could take the Westy I s'pose...

Go on Ian, you know you want to!, I'd love to go but If I'm to do the 8 hour round trip it would have to be in something worth doing it in.

I'm hoping to, but I'm suffering from a serious lack of road-legal tat at the moment, and it's a bloody long way to go in the Innocenti. If I can sort out the coolant leaks on the Skoda (all seven of them  ) this weekend I might go down in that.

Yup-definitely(cos I'm picking up substantive Barkas stuff being hand delivered from Germany).

Either the Peugeot 204-cos its got a built in roofrack for transporting large barkas tailgates, or the knicked Dattie 411 -as a ''thank you''.

Hhmm. Dont know. Seems OK on 'local' trips.

Stuno's helping with a replacement chassis plate, I've changed the clutchplate, master cylinder -front brake shoes etc and it runs Ok now.

Waterpump has been 'glopped' -and is holding up for now. This winter it'll go for a rebuild in Birmingham. Noback seatbyet.

So-probably.

Thanks for asking Michiel

Also like to publicly thank Stuno for all his help. He took a lengthy trip across NZ to inspect a Fiat 1100 for me -not ''quite'' as described; sadly.

Looks like I'll miss it. Two cars, both currently useless, and no monies... :?

Where is it?

I'd like to go, is it a good 'atmosphere' there (meaning, not loads of VW's and cliques)?

The Haynes Motor Musuem, Sparkford, Somerset. I was visiting the Haynes Museum while on holiday in Dorset last year and stumbled upon the RRG completely by accident. I saw a couple of AS cars there, Wat's Amazon and Dollywobbler's 2CV. I got a few things from the autojumble stands as well. The pre-war Diamond diner was nice.

As to what goes there, think of the build threads on RR and, well, that's exaclty what attends! Seemed friendly enough although I was there on the Sunday and most of the cars had already left and I didn't really talk to anyone there.

I won't be going, too difficult to get the time off work and I'd have to go in the A35, and I don't want to do any more long journeys until I've got the new engine in (it's burning oil at a terrific rate). Looks like a good event, and the test track there is open for people to have a bit of fun on, whatever you drive.

Fingers crossed, and thumbs up for Stuno!

Hope there's no more bad luck for you now Nigel (he said with just a touch of selfishness involved...).

I would go but really can't risk the chance that I might go mental and kill the owner of anything painted NATO green!

Me and the e30 are off. It should be a pretty good weekend 8)

Posted

I have tickets, but I'm not sure I can be bothered with what's happened recently.

Posted

I'll be there of course. I will even heave the big old Merc around the track for a laugh.

I'm going for 3 days this time!

I have a ticket that I won't be able to use if anybody wants it ?

I'll be going, but I doubt whether I'll have anything to show. Don't write it off with the usual scene/matt black/lowered/ratlook excuses - they always have good selection of cars of all ride heights, conditions and state of modification, the scale of variation will always make this kind of thing far more interesting that some stately home meet with blinkered old buffers wanking over their Wolseleys. While you might not agree with the whole Retro Rides ethic and forum rules (I think its a victim of its own success), you'll definitely meet some decent people there.

100% agree. One of the friendliest forums I've ever been on, and the meetings are very much the same spirit with stock stuff rubbing shoulders with incredible modifed stuff, and just a little downright awful stuff. Very little.

Somerset!!! Is it me, or does putting something like this at the far end of the country sound a bit stupid?

It's only the far end if you're a bloomin' northerner! :P

Thing is though, its a cracking venue. Yeh it'd be nicer if it were somewhere a bit more central (although Somerset aint that difficult to get to) but to my mind the venue is so good that its worth the distance - the museum, the track, the camping and the space the place has make it worthwhile. I can't think of a venue with the same sort of facilities that would keep everyone happy anywhere else.

M53 > M56 > M6 > M5 > wiggle across a bit, 4hrs tops.

And don't forget that the diner did a lap of the track last year. Great stuff! Sadly it was faster than my 2CV...

The diner in question...(sans trailer on the track)

Will you have enough to buy it back -at auction?

It'll be some local rag-ends jobbie -so its unlikley the price will reflect its real worth.

Agree with that, I don't bother with the forum anymore but really enjoyed the show. It was my last UK one and almost the final outing for the 120y, after I'd got round to painting the door the right fucking colour after 11 months.

Almost probably not going.

The below reasons apply:

1. Not got much money to fritter

2. Too far to go for one day.

3. Can't be arsed camping

4. Too much fuel needed

5. Amazon interior in pieces due to my hamfisted ambitions.

6. Car show overload.

Was aiming to go, but chassis' with missing rear axles are far from ideal to drive halfway across the country :(
