Now I shouldn't admit this, but I can confirm that the bottom external calipers are good for stretching exhaust rubbers on.

I'm the same, got loads of old tools I've no use for but I just like them, like the 3 pairs of mitutoyo Vernier calipers I've got 😂

I’ve got loads of my grandad’s old tools from when he was a joiner. Back then part of his trade apprenticeship was making his own tool kit! He made himself a wooden tool chest to store it all in which he could pick up from home, tie onto his bicycle and head off to site.

Theres all sorts of other tools of his here too that he acquired since then. Everything from hammers, hand drills to garden tools. There’s an ancient set of gardening plant cutters sat on the window ledge in the garage I’ve been stripping the surface rust off.
Some of those old tools are still used here occasionally. I use his old hand twist drills quite a bit in the shed.

Next time the Capri is out of the garage I’ll get his tool kit out for some pics. The amount of houses up north that kit must’ve helped build!

Exactly the same as @danthecapriman, I've got an apprentice wooden toolbox, picked up from an autojumble a few years ago for £5!

I haven't even looked in it for about three years, it's buried under the bench, where it won't get damaged from errant sparks, having things dropped on it etc etc

My grandads saying, again, " better to have a tool I don't need, than need a tool I don't have!"

Never more true

@danthecapriman.. As a Vickers apprentice ('74) we all made up a steel toolbox, at the training school. Brass plate rivetted on with our names.

Also made a set of tools, calipers, marking gauges, screw jacks.... I did a little job - on the side - and turned a soft ally [insert] mallet which has worn well and has seen a fair bit of MM1000/IMP/drum action....

Nice things to have, after a lifetime....

I've got lots of everything, but can't always find the one I want.

Used my external calipers on Friday to make my exhaust fit my new flexy.

Then as mentioned earlier, pulled the exhaust rubber into place with the calipers,  because I couldn't find my wire puller.

I also made an alloy headed hammer at Aerospace. Used it often, and still do.
