Right, that's the BMW and Rover more likely than not sold.

I need a holiday.

I need to go to Czech if I'm away and drop some parts off for the Escort if at all possible.

I'll have a maximum of six days, maybe seven nights.

If I go to Southern Germany or Austria and buy a car, I can drive to Czech and then to England in the car, and pick up the Escort bits in Munich on the way to Czech.

So, I need to fly to Munich or Vienna, buy a car somewhere, get export plates, short term insurance, and going as soon as possible.

Ideally it'd be an old Ford for around €2000 and reliable enough to do 1500 miles in three days. I'd love to get a two door Mk2 Granada or early Capri.

Not that arsed about fuel costs.

Ambitious?

Very! I think you should make your next purchase at Goldies! You will come out either a man or dead!

Posted

It does sound quite heroic, Would it not be easiler to just buy a car over here and drive there and back in it or is your way more fun?.

Posted

I think I prefer my way. If I buy the right old car, I should get my money back, and it'd be interesting.

Is there a car which is worth tuppence in Europe but a fortune over here?

Old Fords you know about, maybe a 1970s 2 door Taunus? A '70s VW maybe? Passat estates seem to make strong money, or is the whole woodie surf thing over now?

Posted

Or, buy a decent Gunmetal or Westminster 3.2S or 4.0S XJ40 with dark leather for a few hundred quid in UK and flog it on the continent for a few thousand to bolster the budget and care even less about fuel.

Posted

I could be tempted to buy a half decent X300, but I don't trust XJ40s enough to try driving across Europeland in one.

Are Fiesta Supersports good news? There's an interesting looking one I've seen, but I'm not sure if its LHDness would put too many people off.

This. I think it is your duty as a Euro travelling Autoshite member to by a car here.

I must be missing something. What is Goldies?

Urk. That lunatic. I suspect I may just give thar a miss. She scares me. I get the feeling she probably sounds like the mad evil woman off Austin Powers.

^^^WHS. WTF is that all about?

Bless, she doesn't look that bad in the videos... and by 'that bad' I mean 'like Iggy Pop'.

And her name is Marina.....

Absolutely barking mad. Here's Roland (presumably Marina's man) demolishing a caravan.

Hmm. I've been thinking about the XJ idea. Might work that.

However, whilst idly driving this afternoon, it kicked off a new thought.

What's the fastest, comfiest, semi-economical, leather lined, air conditioned decent motor I could get for, oh, £1500?

Got to be a bit decent though. I'm not driving a fucking Daewoo all over Europe for fun.

May I suggest a 3.5 SD1 or say a BMW 635? Oh hang on.... errr.

Frogface Scorpio Cosworth 24V, natch. You can take mine for £500, but I think it has a cooling issue... and I'm still waiting for the paperwork!

Posted

24v Senator?

6 cylinder S Class Mercs of 1993 vintage fall within budget.

Or if you have your brave trousers on an Alfa 166.

Posted

I don't like LS400 Lexus. Mate of mine had one and I hated it. Felt like a giant Carina.

Frogeye Scorps are ace, but the radiators tend to balloon and kill head gaskets.

24v Senator would be good, but it's finding a rot free one.

S class Mercs should only be had with V8s.

If there's a V8 option, you know it's the one I'm gonna go for...

Unfortunately, the bloke has just been to see the 635 and knocked it back because it isn't a 'shadowline' one, so the door trims are different. Which means he'd have been buying the whole car just for the two front seats.

Posted

OK. So you're left with £750 cos of the bell end who wanted a Hankmarvinandtheshadowline. This will buy you a V6 Mondeo with leather.

Posted

It certainly would. However. He wasn't the only bloke after the 635... so time will tell.

If the bloke about the 4.2 shows up, then the plan goes ahead.

I'd be quite happy with a ST200 or 220. If I can find a cheap one.

Hirst has a leather clad Primera armchair........ Try that?
