Taking a load of stuff to Chez Saabnut in La Belle France so taking my mates modern van so I would not have any problems. Stopped in Perth to load a kero tank and a log burner and continued down towards Worksop for a weekend on the 🍺 beer and to fill the van with furniture from Derby.
Just south  of Glasgow the van through up a low battery warning but it soon went off. At repeated intervals across the A66 it did it more and more often. I suspected that the charging system had gone on strike and when I moved the electric window the engine cut out! Thought I would see if I could make it but nearing Weatherby services the engine started miss firing and slower we got.
I hoped to make it into the services but had to brake for a wagon so the engine cut out and I conveniently blocked the left lane of the slip road 😀

Called the AA who arrived within 5 minutes !!! Who jump started me and got me into the services.  He looked under the bonnet, made a phone call and has just gone to Harrogate to fetch a new alternator and drive belt. May be here a while but it could be much worse!

Got to my friends near Worksop and all good. Decided to reward it with my friends icarsoft pro box and turned all the warning lights off. Today we went to Derby to finish loading and on the way back it lost power, the warning lights came back on and normal performance was resumed.

Got back to Worksop and went to look at it again and the low battery light came back on. A quick check and it is 11v. Seems like the new Lucas alternator has failed. The AA are booked to be back at 8am!

I'm afraid of electrickery, but AI tells me that, among other things, a bad engine earth can blow Alternators?

AA arrived on time as promised. Quick look showed the output post on the new Lucas alternator was loose causing intermittent charging. Soon tightened up and tested and all good once again proving Lucas stuff is all now finest Chinesium.

Top marks to the AA for superb service on both occasions this weekend. Now in Crawley and ferry from Dover booked at midnight.

Always been super impressed with the AA whenever I've had to use them, which is quite a lot with my old bangers.

Made it to chez Saabnut with no further problems. The mower however had the fuel pipe cut to drain the fuel during the burglary so had to go and buy some and still need to get some jubilee clips. The tractor has decided to start leaking diesel from the lift pump, it is missing on one cylinder which it has never done before and then the bottom hose split. Gave up on that but slow work with the mower as the grass is significantly taller than the mower.
Still all worthwhile when this greeted me at the supermarket car park
