Been contacted by a Spanish production co who are over here in July. they are looking for

  Quote

Please find attached to this mail some pictures of one of the vehicles that we are looking for, One is a Land Rover discovery from 80'90's similar to the one in the picture, The other one would be a land rover"RANCHERA""" sky blue,

Now she has sent me 2 pics of the same disco, so no help there! I did a wikki and google search, drew a blank and now I am waiting on a reply to my email asking if they are using Landrover as a generic, and who was the Ranchera really made by??Anybody throw any light on this? I am thinking either Frontera or even Rancho..... or a horrible mix of both!!!

I know where theres one  Do you think they mean a Land Rover Freelander?.

Just spoke to them again, it could be the Frontera, but then again it could be the Rancho! the car is the 'wife's car' and the disco is 'the husband's'. So I am thinking it will be the Frontera. It's old cars in a modern setting so dunno if Rancho is an option or not..... The wife's has to be pale blue, and I have never seen a Rancho that colour.

i recall they were starch based - hot fired dripped snacks - had an almost pork rind feel to them...rather than the frazzel - which as we all know looks like a bit of bacon

check this out - lethal!!

"Ingredients: Dried Potato Starch, Vegetable Oil and Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Bacon Flavour (Flavour Enhancer - 621, Flavouring), Potato Starch, Salt, Emulsifier (E471), Colours (E160b, E120)." ... "Made in Ireland"

Land Rover did have a Spanish operation, which is now a totally seperate company named Santana. Its probably the name of some Spanish market only Land Rover model, maybe the equivalent of a County or something - perhaps its a Spanish word for 'estate'?I'd do a google images search on Land Rover Santana and see what comes up.

I was wondering that too, is it a Spanish model? Google itself and Wikki didn't come up with anything, I will try images though. Ta!

The Santana take on the County was called the 'Carzola'. They also did the 'Super' versions of the Series IIIA and Series IV 88 and 109 with their own turbocharged version of the Solihull 2.25 diesel and 3.3-litre 6-cylinder versions of the established Landy 4-pots, as well civilian versions of the Land Rover 101 (called the Santana 2000) and the SIII Lightweight (which they called the 'Ligero' in a range of naff paint options). None of which are remotely like 'Ranchero'. I'd go with FredTransit's guess that if they're after a UK 4x4 from the 1990s with a name like that they probably mean the Frontera...unless they're counting grey-import Mitsubishi Pajeros?

Google images was no help BTW, lots of proper landies and the odd Ranchero yank pick up, but nothing like (I think) they are looking for. I have asked for more info, will keep you posted!

In the early 90's there was a Land Rover "90" special edition which was light blue, soft top, big wheels, spots etc and I thik V8 only - what were they called??

Matra Rancho ?

Looks sort of like a Disco from the side. Sort of. Not really UK though eh?

edit: Another guess, but maybe they mean the Range Rover 'van' with panel sides instead of windows. No idea if that had a special name

Anybody selling a disco by the way?

90SV - diesel only.

Santana, who made Land Rovers in spain, also made Suzuki SJs and Nissan Patrols. Could one of those be the mysterious Ranchero?

Diesel only in the UK. USA got a proper V8, lucky sods.

As the others have said the 90SV was the production version, but you may be thinking of the 1988 'Cariba' concept vehicle which was exactly as you describe- it had a very expensive metallic paintjob that faded from dark to light blue from the bottom of the bodywork to the top. It was only a one-off though.

I think that Cariba may have been what I was thinking of, it was a bit "challenge anneka", whereas those SV's are more tasteful...

Here's an update, I sent example pics of 1998 Vitara1998 Fronteraand a Matra Ranco

Hi Fred thanks for this. They seems to me quite new'sh. Would it be possible to have much retro 90'sh 80'sh ?

Now what? I think I am going to stuggle getting 80s small 4X4s. Just thought, anybody on here got a Lada Niva?
Posted

If you can find one that hasn't rotted to dust or been turned into a "hardore off roader", a Suzuki SJ would be about as 80's as you could get, surely?

Posted

Yes, like that. Maybe a decently spec'd 413 would be bob-on?
