They ARE out there!

On my way to work this morning, I was involved in an impromptu early 80s Renault drive by! Turning into a main road, I looked round just in time to see a very clean looking A reg Renault 18 driving past me in my Y reg Renault 9. It was 2-tone black (or poss dark blue) & silver; lower half black(blue?), top half silver. Looked like a mature lady driving it, so probably not enthuiast owned but obviously looked after & quite probably owned from new! I was positively salivating - wish I could have got a picture (not of me salivating...)

Probably an R18 American then. On my way to Tescos earlier I spotted an old couple getting out of an early '70's Volvo 144 which looked super clean. No means of photographing it sadly though.

Driving through Havant last week, heading the opposite way was a W reg what was either a MkI Vauxhall Senator or a Royale saloon (how do you tell the difference besides the badge?!).Spotted a few things in Cornwall the other week but noticeably less interesting stuff than when I was there in 2007. Took some pics, but got nothing outstanding.Incidentally, anyone in the ROC? I'm supposed to be & my annual subs have just been taken from my account via standing order...however....I haven't seen a mag in what feels like ages, many months or more! I know it's only a quarterly these days but still feel sure I should have had more by now. Is anyone else receiving theirs? When was your last one?

I'm not. Used to be but gave it up as a bad job a few years ago and joined RCCC. At least you get the magazine on time! You going to go to ROC / RCCC national event next month Reg?

I passed a scruffy R18 on the M40 a couple of weeks ago, metallic beige posh spec one, roof rack, alloys that looked like they hadn't been cleaned since the early 80s, insulating tape over a rear light lens. Bloke driving looked like he'd probably owned it for a long time, but it was cranking up the '40 at close to 90 for about 15 miles and seemed happy enough to do it.

A Renault 21 Turbo passed my house the other day, saturday to be precise. It was in an attractive dark grey colour, looked excellent! There was so many classics going past on the weekend, was something going on?

Pulling off the bypass on my way home from work earlier, a C-reg Renner Four pulled out just as I was turning in. Hadn't seen a 4 on the road for ages.

Seems unlikely, as I don't know the details! These things are normally quite far from me anyway (where is it?). Bromley is about the furthest I go for a car show. Not adversed to driving far, just driving far in an old relic!

Don't know but it is heading towards show season! You're in Hants aren't you? Travelled along to Portsmouth on Sunday & seemed to pass many classic yanks on the way! Got a picture of a 50s or 60s Dodge pickup truck on our side & there seemed to be lots of old American tin heading the other way too! 8)

Are you sure it was that way round? The American was lower half silver and top half black. The American2 was lower half pale met blue and the top half dark met blue. There are one or two Americans knocking about still. I'd like to know what happened to the one for sale in CCW a year or so back - like mine it was a one owner job.

You've got me doubting myself now! I suppose it could have looked like this;

it's just I was sure it had dark doors or side panels! You're the expert so I'll go with you!

Am feeling some R18 love right now :D Think it might be about time to do the jobs on my American and get it MOT'd. All this talk of visiting France because of adds on Leboncoin is making me think.Last year I picked some quality bits off various R18s in French scrapyards, including accessories such as window wind deflectors etc. There's a huge amount of decent early stuff - including some chrome bumper estates and lots of really decent Turbos on Leboncoin. Perhaps a chance to try out some translation sites for a few emails might be an idea?

I'm planning on doing a trip to some French scrapyards at some point. Probable / possible house move, small Lobster person and general business are making it more difficult to sort when at the moment though. But at some point I shall be pointing the Sprinter in the direction of the channel and going to see what can be found as from what I can gather, I could get an awful lot of relatively rare R4 bits in a couple of days.

I picked up some really rare mudflaps from a seemingly mint 1981 4 GTL. I don't know why I removed them - probably because they had them and I didn't :D Plus I might fit them to my Renault 4 - when I get one  I've started getting the R4L magazine. The latest copy arrived this morning - it's a top quality mag. Being able to understand it would help!

I've not seen a lot about to be honest, but I think that's partly due to either sleeping while being driven about at work, or just not on the roads for aslong the past few months.Last particularly notable cars just 'on the road' were a Montreal and a 405 Mi16x4 well over a month ago :(

Thanks Guys!

A quick history - Renault 18 American Mk1 73000 miles on the clock.

We bought the car one year old in 1984 and it has been kept garaged and serviced by Renault every year.

It's very clean inside as well - smells like new!

Only replaced one wing and both sills in that time.

We don't get to many shows - we're members of ROC - and it usually comes second in the 1980s class - always the bridesmaid....... :-(

As you insisted (!) here are pics from last Sunday where it came second in 1980s (!) class at Loseley Park Motor Show:

Here's some going round the track at the Renault Motorsport day at Donington in 2007 where it was second in show (1980's):

MAJOR TROUSER EXPLOSION!

That is quite remarkable, Nice to see someone that has kept one for so long as well, You must like it then!

As Brucie would say, it's my favourite!

We could never bring ourselves to justify selling it, so it has been a pampered pet.

In fact we would probably have kept all the cars we ever bought, given the opportunity - and the space and the money!! :(

Really sorry we sold our Renault 25 Monaco - it was a beaut.

Still - now we have this one.............. 6.1Litre 0-60 in 5 seconds on LPG

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I'd sooner have the R25 Monaco (Sorry) Do you have any photos of that?, Dollywobber on here has a 21 Monaco, They are great looking cars.

Yes, the Jeep is "modern" but it doesn't half growl! 8)

Here is the only R25 Monaco picture I could find quickly....more later...

Here's one of the 18 at the ROC NEC stand (when some pratt dented the door)

Someone could be overheard to say "I wouldn't want to pay that for THAT!":D

Chased around Silverstone in a Renault 18, by some DMC-12s.

There are worse ways to go.

Welcome to AS.
