Coffee and donuts with the windows and sunroof open this morning because it's nice and cool (17c) outside.

It's a nice old thing, really.

In a world of 'sameness' (look at the cars in the background) something very stylish ...

Decided to give it a modestly long run to New Orleans and back.

Made it without incident but the noise at the back needs investigation.

Drives nicely though. Averaged 24 uk mpg on the round trip.

Yesterday afternoon was a lot of rigamarole.

20241021_180242.jpg.3387e47f1c295ececb8a94f4194d8768.jpg

I had to pull pretty much all the dashboard apart.

20241021_173042.jpg.d024c46a0d295742568a4a5e331014ec.jpg

Why? To get up inside the top of the dash, behind here (in back of the passenger airbag, that netting is over the vent tube to prevent condensation drips).

20241021_173200.jpg.22d3178b5f38a141edd96fcdd3b57dc4.jpg

I needed to get this out because it had stopped working. It's the face vent damper flap actuator. The climate control had a bunch of errors and pressing the where-the-air-goes buttons didn't really do too much. The face vent damper shares space inside the airbox with the screen defrost vent and because the face one wasn't moving, it jammed the defrost and the system just said NOPE and disabled both. So, my choices were face or face and floor. Not great when the screen is misted up with fog.

20241021_173718.jpg.82c404576f3d70e55fac90745c0d86c7.jpg

Onto the bench it went. Into pieces it came. Applied power to the little silver motor and nothing happened. No movement, no current draw. Matched the error message (45 - damper not moving when commanded).

I uncrimped the end cap and checked see. The commutator was dirty and the brushes needed adjustment. Fixed that, put it together and it ran properly again.

Finally, tested the potentiometer that's attached to the output shaft, which the climate ECU uses to determine where the damper flap is and it works too so that can go back in the car this afternoon.

There are 3 damper flaps in the air box.

Face vents, screen vent, floor vents.

Each has an actuator motor which operate via the ECU.

There's physically not enough space in the top so like two doors in a hallway adjacent, only one can be opened at a time, and that happened here. The face vents got stuck open and so the screen vent flap gets jammed.

Hopefully this fixes it

sounds way more complicated that a slider with a wire on the end :D

are they all lucas actuators or will the smoke stay in these ones :D

They're Denso, so it should continue to work. In theory.

Okay. That can sit in there overnight and the glue can fully cure.

Test made, flap still works and test mode of the climate control completes successfully.

Yes, but they made the center console out of chocolate.

Yup. Seems to have mostly worked.

Dash all back together, climate control fully working with no errors.

Airbag light went out.

Hit defrost and got plenty air on the screen, which cleared quickly. Nice.

It does look good when the paint is wet and the light is kind.

Technically it's a South American word so y'all are saying it wrong.

Jag-wah is more correct.

The car made me giggle yesterday.

That was the first time I used Sport and full throttle at the same time.
