Papa? Nicole? -my latest shite purchase - (Car sold!)

Got a call from my cousin yesterday who had taken in a tatty Renault Clio on a part exchange, asking if I wanted it.

He was going to scrap it but as it has an MOT until Feb 2011, 3 new tyres and runs really well - the problem is it looks like something even Onslow from Keeping Up Apperances wouldnt even get into. Its got 106k on the clock.

For £160 quid though, I can't complain. As I say, it runs well and th interior is suprisingly clean and tidy. I think with a bit of TLC, arches and bumpers need rubbing down and painting, bit of trim from the scrappy, a set of cheapy wheeltrims which I have anyway, a damn good T cut and a couple of dents that should push out - then I should make a couple of quid on it!. fingers crossed anyway.

apologies for the shite pics, I took them on the way out of the door this morning, and anyway, my drives quite full now so its shoehorned in at the moment!

I'd say that'll clean up well. An oul'han* in the motor trade told me years ago that if the wheels look good and the windows are clean, that's half the battle. Autoglym Super Resin Polish FTW on paint like that.*oul-han - Ulster vernacular, meaning old-timer or veteran

oh...NICE...!!

+1 for the RATTY BRIGADE...chequer roof, roofrack and rusty bonnet is definitely on the cards yeah?

Forget wheel trims, a tin of silver hammerite ish from the local 99p shop and they will look fine. I bought some recently and it's top stuff. I'm hoping it lasts longer than the wheel silver I get at the spares place.

I used Smoothrite but did the same on my wheels on the micra - looks a treat with the 99p off ebay center caps. For total lazy arsedness I didnt even paint the middle bits hidden by the trims.

Original base models of these only had painted wheelz anyway so yeah, break out the silver smoothrite!Thats class that is. You will never fear parking that next to an MPV with child seats in the back (guaranteed parking dings on return). Bit of t-cut and some polish and jobs a goodun on this. You could probably locate the missing trim from a breaker for a fiver and a few pence worth of clips later you have an almost original old runabout there. I'd hit it anyway!

began to 'tart the old girl up' today.hopefully it will be finished by this time tomorrow.ill bung some pics up then so you can see a 'before and after' view of the shitter.

That's my kind of timescale for a restoration

Its a sad state of affairs when you consider how many films, tunes, and various other forms of entertainment are available online that i find myself looking at pictures of faded blue Clio's and I am taken by an urge to get to Halfords, buy polish, t-cut, and cloths and spend an afternoon polishing an old motor. Even if ultimately its a clunker in everyone elses eyes, the fact is with some elbow grease and a bit of ebaying for trim and you'll have a straight shiny motor there. My wife just cannot understand it. She sees nothing wrong with repairing and repainting bits of house, or doing up some old furniture but when it comes to things like fixing old machines or even cleaning up shoes she finds the whole thing a waste of time and effort. Why is that?

I know what you mean mate!.A few years ago I regulary used to do this, buy an old banger now and again, spend an afternoon cleaning it and fixing minor little things, then peddling it on.

That's come up alright hasn't it? That clay stuff seems to work well on that kinda fadey paint, is that what you used?

omg what did you use on them bumpers they look new

I used Wilkinsons spray polish (£1.99) and then a bit of T cut. Sadly the bonnet isnt great as it looks like someone has thrown Paint stripper or something on it in the past, but it looks a hell of a lot better than it did.Sprayed the front bumper with truty old black 'auto spray' from Poundland and used 'Poundlands own brand Back to Black' on the rear one.Trims cost me £2 from a Carboot sale, also got a Haynes from the 'boot as well for a quid. Rubber Car mats (2 sets) from Poundland, missing trim and clips from the local scrappy for £2. filler and paint from the depths of my garage!

And they say you can't polish a turd!Seriously, well done!

Damn have you been watching me prep cars? Wilkinson's spray polish is the business!

Well done matey, that's looking about 280% better than it did! Liking the blackness of the bumpers - they looked too far gone to be rescued with bumper care or anything like that. Shove a bit of wag in those rear arches and it's a WINNAH. Oh, on a sidenote, my mate has got a Civic with a very close match to your reg on the Clio, his is N753 EUM. Was from Leeds originally so I should imagine that's where your Renno is from too?

furkinell - you got me drooling....that Nicole and her 'summer dresses' could have been washed and brought to my tent anytime....

I thought it had potential but sir you have done yourself proud with that. Its come up beautifully and you should be very pleased with yourself. There you go then, nice shiny wee runabout for buttons, cant be bad! And isnt it nice when you can get the bits you need for a quid from a breakers or boot sale rather than "yeah, £79.95 for the trim clip mate" from a main dealer. Its the proper Autoshite way.

Posted

Cheers for the kind words guys!your right Parky, the autoshite way of doing up a car is certainly using items from Carboot sales and Poundshops! ha!

Posted

HAHA! That's chuffing brilliant. Bloody well done. :D Dunno know why, but that's making me LOL.Good drills!

Well, the Clio went to the first lad who rang this morning after it went into the local 'quids in' paper this morning. No real quibbles, full 295 asking price. He did offer me 250 but I told him its none negotiable as I have had 'loads of calls' Not a Lie as I had about 3 missed calls when I looked at my phone after playing football after work. I think that is a fair price after the 'revovation' His girlfriend was with him and the car was for her to learn to drive with. Thankfully they were not a scummy couple and seemed pleasant enough.Result. :)

Jesus, I'd say that was in 'excellent condition' from the photos! What a difference!

That really does look great! It's like AS 'Wheelers Dealers' - you could do a Brewer style round up of cost and add 'look what throwing a bucket of water over it did'.
