Many reasons NOT to buy a discovery 2. MOT PASSED!

There are three possible legal issues arising from any dud parts (whatever supplies).

First that they are not as described or of merchantable quality.

Second that they diverge so far from the original part - that the vehicle is in effect rendered 'modified' from it's original specification.

And third - in the case of collision or other accident - that a failure of a supplied part contributing to the  incident could make the supplier culpable. In the event a legal case could require disclosure of all the background to any part deemed involved including design specification and original manufacturer.

The latter would be particularly serious if there was a fatality involved.

The problem I can see there is that they'd blame the driver/mechanic anyway, regardless of what faulty parts were fitted.

I think you're right, but pretty sure that's not the way things would go😕

Couple of 3 to 4mm holes discretely* drilled someplace helps if you're not chasing concours prizes (or just value your spare time)

This worked on the kid's FreeLoader 2 okay, rest of the vehicle subsequently fell apart but it never drowned any more bulbs..........

I did exactly that, small hole at the bottom to drain, but the disco is off the road now for the foreseeable future due to extensive chassis rot so it’s sat in my unit until I can repair it.

I used to try to get allmakes stuff, but the quality dropped with them too, and then they went bust.

If you can find any, county stuff seems pretty good.

Allmakes were bought out by Britpart who took all the good parts and rebranded them in their own boxes and resold them. Then threw allmakes away. I used to buy Allmakes stuff years ago as I never had a problem with their stuff but since I had a good convo with a chap that worked in QC department I’ve stopped.

ive saved my fuel filter, if I ever get the chance to go back to the shop I’ll get them to throw it through britparts living room window wrapped in a diesel soaked rag with a note on it saying “tossers”

As well as the original All Makes, I was happy with Bearmach, but unfortunately they are no more as well.

Bearmach - now there's a blast from the past :-)

My first meeting with BritPart was around 1994 - bought a fuel pump for a 3.5 RR via Craddocks - the sort that fits down by the rear wheel arch. I got all the way from Daventry to outside the Pug factory at Ryton (15 miles) before it died and big, yellow taxi. I took the shonky pump off and went into Craddocks with it - rattled it at the counter guy and he just kind of shrugged 'Meh, BritPart innit'. Not bought from Craddocks or Britpart since.

Craddocks lost my business years ago, I ordered both sides footwell repairs and door pillars for my first RRC,  they send me two offside of everything, and then tried to blame me, and wouldn't refund the postage properly!

M&Ms down Worcester way weren't bad, but used because I used to drive past them all the time for work, or famous four seem to know what they're about, but not the cheapest

I’ve had a couple of dash bulbs out for a while now. And one more has followed. So tonight I’ve attempted to rectify at least a couple of bulbs in the heater control unit. It’s got dual control, and the right side heat button doesn’t illuminate, annoying now it’s dark early.

This one to be exact

so I set to and removed the control from the dash. I have brand new bulbs in stock, so not a penny spent.

while I was in there, I changed them all! 3 across the top that light up the display. Two for the hot/cold buttons and one for the buttons along the bottom.

and guess what! Now none of them work. Only the display bulbs. You fucking horrible hateful spiteful chunk of British SHIT.

im at a loss, I don’t know why. I put the old bulbs back in and nothing, still dark. Fuck you landrover. 🖕

I sat down for a while to cool my head.

I had used bulbs from a bag full of bulbs. Were they already blown? so I had a look through the brown envelope of bulbs and found some still in packages.

Ours has gone from a healthy thirst for ACE fluid to an addiction, perhaps we could have a synchronised burn 😁

It definitely feels like we own something designed and built by BL in the 70s...

ACE is great. Somewhere in this topic of useful Landrover info is where I rebuilt it with stainless pipes and repaired the valve block. Shout me if you want more info.

I've definitely started testing anything electrical, wherever possible, to see if it works before I actually start stripping the car down to fit bits.

I do try to make sure that I've binned anything that's taken out which doesn't work, but it's still really easy to get caught out.

I definitely got caught out on this one. I have more bulbs in random bags too that probably don’t work, but also still have another set in sealed bags so it’s a right mash 🤣

It’s broken again.

FFS

back to having difficulties starting again, exact same issue I had before. It’s been starting and running perfectly well since I changed the fuel filter last month, not an ounce of trouble, then boom. Attempted to start in the car park at work and it coughed into life. Attempted to start this morning and it wouldn’t. Fires but cuts straight out. Only once the ignition has been primed a few times will it cough itself back into life.

Thought I’d cured this. In fact I was ADAMANT I’d cured it with a decent filtray fitted. But no.

it’ll end up having the parts cannon thrown at it. Next up is injector seals or filter housing. The filter houses go porous apparently and drag air in. But why on earth has it been starting fine every day since mid November? Oh and my door is still rattling. Cunt.

🤦‍♂️

  • sutty2006 changed the title to Many reasons NOT to buy a discovery 2. Hello? Yeah it’s broken again.

Let’s try this next

hopefully get it by the weekend

On my old diesel P38, I had a major diesel drain back issue, sometimes it would almost flatten the battery before it actually dragged itself to life.

I 'fixed' it by fitting a cheapo no return valve in the supply line.

Posted

Yeah these “duckbill” non return valves are just over £20. Then there’s a bleed valve on the filter housing, they’re double at just over £40. Injector washers and o-rings are about £50 for a set if you can find the right seller on eBay for genuine ones. It starts getting expensive when you’ve already changed the pump (£140) and the filter (£18) 🙄😅

Every time I start thinking a TD5 might be a nice idea.... 🤣

Hope the cheap fix is the right one.

They’re great when they’re working.

all the while I’ve got a 4.0 v8 torque converter and adapter kit to fit soon too!

I swapped from a TDI engine to a td5

And then swapped back again.

Good way to waste the best part of £3k...😕

I must admit I keep get drawn back to a LR vehicle every now and then, but the heroes on here keep me straight...

Although a D1 3dr would probably sneak it's way in.

And that's the thing.

You either love or hate them (sometimes both!)

My life just wouldn't work without some form of landy, they're just so versatile, everything I actually need in one car.

Tractor unit? Yup

Need to move 1/2 ton of sand? Easy

Collect more firewood? Where is it?

And so on

True.

I've even come to like the agricultural growl of the 300TDI and the crashing ride.

Weird.

D1 and D2 are great …. When they work!

I would have another in a heartbeat if they weren’t so good at breaking in ways you wouldn’t think possible.

They love to crack the outlet on the in-tank sender unit. This then causes long cranks or crank no starts …. Wonder how I know about that 😆

Found one hardline leaking which I've repaired but the front ram is done🙁

Any idea if the pattern part one's for £250 are any good?

Poxy thing 😁

In context they are no worse than any other 4x4/commercial vehicle during the era in which they were built. I mean D1s are all at least 28 years old, and D2s 20 years old. They usually get run on a shoestring or very heavily or unsympathetically used on things like heavy towing or worse still off roading. I wouldn’t say there are many much better options in the 4x4 marketplace built between 1990 and 2005.

I’ve never bought one. But my advice is there are many people “deleting” the ace system. You will probably land on a good second hand ram pretty easily.
