That early dashboard is ace. My dad had a 1969 Maxi (new) and it was a revelation at the time to us.He must have had a soft spot for 'em as he later had a 1974/5 one new in a pretty minging called burnt orange iirc. OFO 9M, bet it's long since scrapped.

Smashing shite, with lovely patina and general appearance - way better than my 1800 LandCrab which had a load of rot in the wings, someone had sprayed the originally white '74 Morris in Rover Brazilia (Brown) to hide the rot. Nothing came close in the snow though, bar perhaps a Shiteroen GS. Tardis-like machine with ribbon speedo and fine ride. Did the Maxi use the same shell?

Yeah, bless 'em those Maxis were a bloody good car.Solid, genuine ones like that 1500 you just sold are still popping up from time to time, some day I plan to add a nice, pre-Hydrasag, AP auto one to my current fleet.Trouble with that is, if I did, I'd soon have reason to be grateful for the car's ability to provide temporary accommodation. :(

Did the Maxi use the same shell?

No, but they shared the same doors.

I was actually thinking of you collecting this today Mr H, whilst under a certain red car i clonked my head on the tow bar, then though "Ooh wonder how Mr H Scepter is getting on with the Maxi" Glad it is in good hands.Must say though, i take my hat off to Joe for trusting fellow shite-ers with it.Then well done Cavette, for keeping it in "good shape"It all rests on Mr H Scepter now ! :D Keep us all updated, with any problems or changes

Great car there and quite an early convert to the hatchback too.

Did the Maxi use the same shell?

No, but they shared the same doors.
I think 'those doors' were used on about a dozen or so Austins, Wolseleys, Leylands and the like! GR8 for getting spares from different sources!

A belated congratulations from Australia! Textbook AS collection and AS vehicle. Did you and Mason have the obligatory 2 x Guinni outside country pub on the way back? Only gutted to have missed being there in person for that. It's a beautiful machine and what a sterling fellow Cavette is for this fine display of generosity. Flying back to blighty tonight and looking forward to seeing the car in person asap. Plus will be updating my long overdue spotting thread next week with a megahaul covering the UK, Amsterdam and Australia. Rustic felicitations once more m'colleague.

Aha - m'colleague.Tis indeed a fine & handsome carriage.Tell me when would be a good day for me to take a spin down to Stevenage & if you can take an 'executive' length lunch we'll go for a cruise.Actually, didnt stop for Guinness in country pub this time, so have broken with tradition somwhat......

Glad you're saving that premiere pint of the black stuff for when I clap eyes on it. I'm back in work on Tue I think so basically any time then onwards, just this first week I'll be surviving on little sleep from the impending sleepless nights whilst the little 'un copes with an upside down bodyclock once again. Friday lunchtime could be best, would take a very long lunchbreak for this, turning into the rest of the day in fact. Must get the Audi back on the road this week too for shite cruising convoy, exhaust issue needs attention. Oh and an MOT, must contact our resident man DaveRapid this week for that.

Cool, so potentially a Friday meeting. We'll pencil it in then m'colleague. You won't be disappointed.

Seeing the Audi and Maxi pottering around in convoy would be a marvellous sight! Well done Cavette and Mr HS.

Great purchase.Maxi 1500's must be the rarest Maxi now.I know I am biased but I do think they look best in dark green.Peter.

Went out tonight, it was a bit shit, so decided to take a 'moody' nightime shot of the motor.

Well, after 4 days of ownership & I've pootled about in her every day, she still hasnt let me down once. She starts 1st time every time & only needs choke for a hundred yards or so.I've topped up the oil, as it was registering quite low on the dipstick & have removed the speaker from the shelf under the glove box, as said shelf was coming adrift and sagging. This has now been secured with a good dose of gaffer tape & is now relatively secure. This afternoon I cleaned the back seats & door trims, which has got rid of the worst of the 39 years worth of muck, but theres a long way to go there!I've just got back from the jet wash armed with a bottle of polish to see if it will add a bit of life to the paintwork, but unfortunately the heavens opened so that has had to be put off. Saying that, the rain has now stopped......

Cool.Try and intimidate the neighbours by driving round the block slowly with only sidelights on. :D

The sun has been out today & I've had time on my hands, so I decided to T-cut & polish the Maxi, so here are a few snaps:

T-cut applied, pre rubbing in.

Its deffo breathed a bit of life into the paintwork, but still very much has that used look that is very much the Autoshite way.

I'm pretty happy with the results.

Did you miss a bit? (front valance)Looks bloomin' good though! Nice work. I can never be arsed with polishing. But then I'm not trying to impress Polish laydees...

Posted

Never usually bother polishing either, but fancied giving it a go.You're absolutely right, I have missed the front valance. Balls. Right, off to deal with that....

F*ck me, that's concours now. :D You can tell she's an early Mark 2 (October 1970) with the A U S T I N letters on the tailgate and the Mark 1 type seats. I tyhink these were dropped in late 1971 (K reg). The 1750 arrived in October 1970 and only as a Mark 2. You could spot these by the grille centre badge - the 1500 had the black badge with the silver cross, the 1750 having the black and gold chequered flag insert. IIRC the 1750 had the full wheeltrims as well?Mark 2's were all rod change. I can hear the high pitched fan whine from here, a truly classic motor. That one only needs a day with Wag and a rattle can (Connaught green?) and a front bumper to look mint. I'd do the wheels as well.

Posted

Just needs a bit of silver Hammerite on the wheels and some Morrison's boot polish on the tyres and it'll look a corker.

Drivers door isnt aligned properly which will need sorting at some point, & the wing mirror is a bit loose, but thats no doubt just a screw or something.Whats the best product for getting chrome shiny? Brasso?Front valance now sorted, for reference.

Whats the best product for getting chrome shiny?

Autosol Metal Polish/Cleaner FTW. It's abrasive enough to remove any rust spots but doesn't scratch the surface. Used to use it on the bumpers of the Zephyr
