Renner grave yard. Update- it's here!

We had a bit of a trip out yesterday, to view a Renault 25 Baccara which is for sale. Still not decided about that, but the chap selling it is obviously a total Renault addict! The yard was full of dead and dying Fuegos, and no less than 4 21 turbos, 3 of which were Quadras!! Think there's some on here who might appreciate the pics:-

Here is the object of the trip, alongside my own TXE.

and here's a line up you're not likely to see anywhere else!

Inside the Baccara- unfortunately looking it's age!

and the controls for the "ergonomic" seats- all of which work, to be fair.

Here are the 21s:-

Oddly, in amongst all the Renaults, this 2 door Sierra shell.

Matra Murena?

I'd say it was a Matra Bagheera.Great pictures, wonder how a 21 Turbo would go on all-round space savers!

Ah, Baccara you mean? I'd forgotten! Glad you like. I didn't get chance to peek under the tarp, so not really got a clue what's underneath!

having owned 2 of these many moons ago, would love another on the drive 8)

I know that place too! Fairly local tto me.He's got some interesting stuff there - the Mk1 5s have been there at least seven years though, probably longer.

This Fuego is full of WANT.

In my dreams, however....

Those Fuego's are one car that disappeared instantly about 15 years ago. They were quite common, and then disappeared completely. Haven't seen one for years, I'd love one!

Shame there are so many with window off/open. They're reverting to the soil far quicker than they should do.....

As you may recall, I'm a bit of a 'Dashboards fanatic' and every time I see a loaded R25 dash I always go a little weak at the knees. It is one of my all time faves - the split central armrests, bubbling with switches is the stuff of dreams!

I must say, I completely agree!! I love sitting at the helm of my Starship Enterprise!! Looks great at night too!

I haven't been there in a good few years but some of them were there when I last went. They will be pretty damn rotten now sadly :( All of them will be for breaking anyway and I guess glass is easy to sell....

Out of mild interest, how much is he asking for the Baccara?

Currently under negotiation!!

what does the Z button by the shifter do?

It's not something my car has, but I think it's the cruise control on/off switch. May be wrong!

Z is for zoom, you press it and then the car transforms to a crime fighting supercar like inspector gadgets.Maybe.

Brilliant!! If only it were true!

I thought Z was for Zero. Press the button and feel the pain of what it'd depreciate to in its first few years of life

Excellent, hope you get it mate, that interior is superb!

Crikey. What a collection of tat! Really weird given how few 21s and Fuegos you see on the roads these days.

Thing is, it's the interior that lets it down the most!! It looks every day of it's age; the leather is really worn, there's a tear in the driver's seat, and the carpets are filthy. It's really sad, coz the interior in mine, which is exactly the same age, looks almost new! If it weren't for the fact that Baccaras are so very rare, and be looking elsewhere.

Hi,

that does not look too bad. I have had the Baccara floor mats in the washing mashine with no worry at all. There are also enough products to redy the leather (although a tear is a problem...). The Baccara leather is really thin and soft, quite different from the ordinary beige (monaco) or black leather.

And a bit of anorak mode for those interested:

What I would worry about is the Auto Trans. I gave one Baccara Auto away because I was so fed up with it, although I had all the parts to fix it. The gearbox had had it, but what was worse was the transmission oil cooler in front of the right wheel. It is a piece of French engineering at ist best:

- The fan seizes up due to the dirt from the front wheel. The dirt causes rust on the fan itself (normally absol. rotten), the ATF is not properly cooled (which causes those gearbox failures) and if you are lucky the stuck fan causes an under-bonnet fire.... :( :(

- the cooler itself has a contact corrosion problem (alloy and steel) and starts dissolving itself. :( Here it is - and not cheap

http://cgi.ebay.de/Olkuehler-Motoroel-R ... 25592caf72

=> one solution is to fit a Racing oil cooler under the radiator. It is way cheaper and better. You just have to get the hoses fabricated.

So, so sum it up: Check that oil cooler. Ask the seller to change the ATF and filter before the sale (sure he has a XR25 diagnostic computer). If the gearbox shifts fine it will surely be a great car. Just be prepared for some modifications.

Wikipedia says the same:

The Transmission itself was not that bad, poor quality and design of the ATF cooler, however, especially on the later AR4, resulted in one-of-the-worst automatic transmissions built reputation. The leaking ATF cooler meant quick transmission death without any warning, except for ATF stains beneath the vehicle to which not all drivers paid attention or not quickly enough. The results were disastrous.

Thanks for that Daniel. The biggest thing in it's favour is that it had a new gear box about 3000 miles ago, with a new cooler and all new cooler hoses, so not too worried about the box. As a matter of interest, my TXE has an autobox with about 60000 miles on it, which is about as long as they're supposed to last. But, it too has had a new cooler (well, a second hand replacement, but it seems sound) and the fan is working, plus it had clean ATF fluid and filter not long after I got it. Touch wood, it's working fine at the moment!!

Hi,

then I'd go for it. Sounds like someone with knowledge serviced it.

4-cylinder AR4 seem to last longer anyway. However, there are examples of R25 V6 with the AR4 with over 150.000 miles in our German forum. All other AR4/AD4/AD8 have water / ATF coolers. The ATF / air cooler seems to guarantee a longer life, as long as it works. Check here what an arse of a job it is to change the unit:

http://www.renaultforum.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?t=186

=> Thus if you service that gearbox properly it can last just as long as others.

In that condition it would fetch around 1500 Euros here. Suppose it is less in GB?

Daniel

p.s. the EX button is a kind of sport button: The gearbox will shift at higher revs.
