Guest Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Hello. My C4 has a new noise which is slowly driving me mental (again). I can only describe it as a drone that rises in pitch as you increase speed. From 0 - 50 mph there's a grumble and a strange jingling sound. Between 50-60 mph the drone rises in tone, and beyond 60 it goes back to the grumble. The sound is on the OS front. I thought initially that a piece of bodywork had worked loose and was catching. When that proved fruitless I thought it might be a wanked disc with runout (my 306 made a similar noise once). The problem with that little theory is that the noise occurs in the speed range mentioned whether you're on or off the brakes. Anyway, here's the video. It's quite noticeable, which is a relief because at least it's not just me hearing it. Oh and did I mention the wheel jiggle is back? I tell you what, this fucking thing can't go more than 3 months without knackering itself in some way. Unbelievable. I am going to go spare if it's the wheel bearing. I can't afford any more expenditure on the stupid thing.
AXrescuer Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 My Saab 900 made a very similar noise. Did turn out to be the front near-side wheel bearing.
Richard Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 If it's a wheel bearing you will probably be able to feel it when you turn the wheel by hand. Check all the wheels, sometimes noises can transmit.
AnthonyG Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Just get shot of it, part - ex it for something else. Its not worth all this hassle.
Guest Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Just get shot of it, part - ex it for something else. Its not worth all this hassle.Lease isn't up yet. Comical isn't it?
Station Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 I couldn't hear anything on the video? If it's wheel bearing, there should be a few degrees of turn on the wheel where the bearing won't vibrate (usually turning towards the wheel that's at fault). Horrendous amount of things gone wrong with this car!
mk1_4dr Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 I haven't watched the video, but your description certainly sound like a wheel bearing.I agree with some of the sentimenta above, in as much as, this particular PSA product had fought you every step of the way. When is the lease up?I can't help but think about how much you must have tied up in this, I wonder how much you'd have had to put into the 'Zon to do the same mileage?
scruff Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 As our friend in Jersey says - Shite is Right.Good luck with it, sounds a right PITA of a thing.
Talbotman Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 If the car is still within the terms of lease "citroen elect 3?" i would presume- the car should be still be in warranty - if your dealer deems under warranty that the bearing is not covered under the usual wear and tear nonsence - your completely within your rights under the terms of the lease to hand the car back and say thankyou and goodnite vienna to the agreement if youve reached 2/3rds of the plan.
Guest Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Hey, thanks for the comments. The lease is up in July. If I go back to Uni this year I can't have it throwing strops like this - I won't be able to afford them. Priced up the wheel bearing and I'm looking at £113.70. When you're still paying out on the stupid thing, that hurts. That hurts a lot. As I've mentioned previously, Citroen couldn't have cared less when I went back to them with the problems this car has had. E mails, letters, phone calls - fuck off, there's the door, we're not interested. Citroen don't care. I've only ever been able to get a new door seal off the dealer on the warranty, and the look of utter hatred in their eyes when they did it was as if I'd just shit in their cornflakes that morning. An utterly worthless warranty. I have had to pay for fucking EVERYTHING that has gone wrong with that car. I'm just going to add it to the list of things that shouldn't have broken on a 2006, 63,000 mile car. Yeah, I know the mileage is high for the age, but it's not mental. It's still well within the capability of a modern car. Doors misalignedFront discs fucked at 20,000 miles.4 sets of rear discs and a rear wheel bearing through consistent warpingRear pads squeal incessantly despite being greased properlyGlove box brokeCentre flap brokeKey brokeWipers misaligned and scratched the top half of the screenWheels constantly going out of alignment and jiggling at motorway speedBrake pedal effort inconsistent Juddering clutch which never shows up at service time. Add to that the astronomical cost of service parts (see evidence above) and you can see why I'm fed up. It's not neglected or driven hard and is regularly serviced. I used to think Ford were the worst for building a car down to the absolute minimum cost you could get away with. Turns out I was wrong. I don't think I've ever hated a car more. All it has to do is work, properly. It can't even do that. Pathetic. It's got to the point where I'm annoyed if I have to drive it anywhere. I've had a great day out at the IWM in Salford Quays, and then a top lunch with some friends, and I'm back home now in a foul mood because the car pisses me off. Blah blah fucking blah.
Pillock Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Do you have gap insurance, or the equivalent on it? i.e. if it gets written off, will you be liable for any outstanding HP/lease?If you're not going to be out of pocket, I'd embed it firmly and deeply in the dealer's showroom, via the plate glass window. Suggested entry speed 25-30mph. Then go out, buy something crap like a 205 dizzler for 300 notes cos that way, when it goes wrong, we'll know what the problem is. And if it costs more than 150 quid to fix, you weigh it in and buy another.I'm only being half-serious I guess, but is there no way at all you can take this bad dream of a car and get rid, walk away?
Guest Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Sorry, I should have been clearer. I use the word 'lease' for anything on tick, which is what my car is. It's on that ghey Interest Free Finance deal that they had out a few years back. Never again......
mk1_4dr Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Seriously though, if you keep it, and it keeps breaking, it'll eventually break you. Be that mentaly of financially. Were all friends here, although I would completely understand if you didn't want to elaborate, but would the resale value even touch the sides of the outstanding H/P?It just seems that barely a week goes by without a, now legendary, WAT_ C4 rant

Also, fatha_Wat put some money to on top 'because it gets you out of that fucking awful Peugeot'.Bear in mind that at the time, the 306 probably needed about £800's worth of work, and it was continually skinting me at the time when my health was not the mintiest. When it went, the NS driveshaft was on the way out, there were some bloody awful clonks from the rear subframe and the head gasket was showing signs of farrping. I'd just spunked £300 on it anyway for a new exhaust and 4 new tyres. It had an interstellar mileage BTW, and I'd had my money's worth.Selling the C4 now I'd see what? £4K? It's worth considering. If the wheel bearing does need doing, and I'm 90% certain it will, I'll get one and get SCTSH_ANDY to fit it for me with me holding \ learning stuff. I'll then get the damn thing tracked and balanced properly at Drury Lane (so, done MY way for a change) and we'll see how we go.I'll whip the back pads off and get 'em greased. Again. And consider my options for July.I had another go in an Auris SR 180. It's the first modern I could actually see myself having if I went that way again. IF I went that way again.I would probably chuck the driver's floor mat out though. I could live with that.
scruff Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Get a Pug 205 diesel and spend what you would be spunking on the C4 on that utterly gorgeous Amazon. Just a suggestion like
icedmunkie Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Don't get me started on dealerships and warranty with cars, there not worth a wank!!Even if a garage is being nice by helping you out if the warranty is just out then there still stinging you hard and fast!Once a car is on finance there is not alot you can do and a wheel bearing wouldn't be covered under warranty unless you do hardly any miles and being a uni student you prob drive a million miles all the time!Is it with a main dealer or a secondhand garage? the latter are normally more willing to help!As for the noise I agree could be a bearing and there not that bad of a job to do! Couple of hours if you aint got a ramp to play with!
pogweasel Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 My C4 is shit.I want an Auris SR 180. And so the circle starts again.
Guest Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 My C4 is shit.I want an Auris SR 180. And so the circle starts again.I'm not buying a Focus Pog. No, no and thrice no.Are Aurises 'damaged goods' or something?I'm sort of stuck for an alternative really, in that class of car we have:Ford Focus = No.Vauxhall Astra = Fucking no way.PSA shit = What do you think?Renault = Yeah, right. No.Fiat \ Alfa = Very sensible............er, no.VAGinal cars = Overpriced, overrated, boring, no.That leaves with me with the Japanese stuff. The Civic is odd and has a shit ride. The 3 looks shit, is shit inside and has a shit ride. I'd rather eat shit than have a Qashquim, they're shit. The Auris looks shit but is usefully quick and doesn't have a shit ride. And Toyotas are supposedly reliable, are they not? I can live without a floor mat, as I've said.A well mantained older car is starting to appeal though.
Pete-M Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Wheel bearing noise can travel in strange ways. I replaced three wheel bearings on a Mk2 Golf before finding out it was the one I'd not done.Still, it drove a lot better after that.
pogweasel Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 A well mantained older car is starting to appeal though. At last. If you have an office job that does not require huge bizness mileage, there's simply no justification for a vehicle on the never-never. Ever.
Rogue trader Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 What dealer chain is it iv had dealings with Pendragon (Stratstone and Evans Halshaw) and always had problems with them, promise the world when buying and show no imterest at all when things go wrong.
Guest Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Fix the Celeste and run that, you'd be the coolest cat in Manchester.

Citroen Manchester \ Manchester South. The latter are way better nowadays but would still rather grill their bollocks over hot charcoal than admit one of the cars they supplied has a problem.
Milford Cubicle Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 An Auris? I hope you don't mind DYING OF DEATH IN AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION FIREBALL.I can't see the appeal of new cars anymore, especially as 99% of them are overcomplicated wank.
Guest Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Fix the Celeste and run that, you'd be the coolest cat in Manchester. But I'd be using it and not preserving it. They're OMG rare so rare and the Johnno thought police would have me shot. I'd be floating down Deansgate locks come the morrow.I won't rule it out. You can't get Hit40UK on a MW radio, so that's something in it's favour.
