Watching this upset me as a 10 year old.

It says 1980, but I'm guessing more early 1979 due to the Cortina being a Mk4 instead of a Mk5/Cortina 80.

Fair play to Lovejoy for having the bottle to ride pilly, helmetless, on the back of a 1978 Z1000 while it's being thrashed through traffic. Trust me, 1978 tyre technology coupled with a bike that can handle like it has a hinge in the middle made this a brave stunt!

When he checks the hotel register it says April 79, the date given for films is I believe when they are/were first released.

Lovejoy was great.

Mostly shot on location so lots of background vehicles.

Note the Hull reg number on the Alfa. Ellisons of Hull brought in brand new LHD Spyders converted them to RHD and then registered them. There are a surprisingly large number of RH, KH, AT and AG registered RHD Spyders.

They threw the same white Jag and red Renault Dauphine into a quarry several times...

The Dauphine footage was used in Father Ted when Father Larry Duff was distracted by his mobile phone while driving!

Interesting, a guy round here used to do that, a bank manager's son.
