chopping up the rear end is a VERY last resort, think i will be pushing it though as i don't have the skills for that

Back in the hot rodding days of the 70's narrowing a rear axle was seen as a weekends work.

Have you put the Fester on the back burner for now? It's soooo close to being finished.

Pretty much, not much to do to it.

I got abit "prod happy" and made the passengers door worse (Rust at the bottom of it)

But i'm gonna wait till i can afford a TIG, then replace the bottom skin myself :D

Other than that and getting a factory Fog Light ... and tax - it's done (i think)

Thanks for the interest thou' Warren

I am getting the key to my garage soon if you want a place to lob the Fiesta bodykit, etc in.

Thanks Dave :)

For now i have been able to squish everything into my rather tiny tin cabin.

Just need to sell it really.

What is going on with this Reliant "project" here?

I don't mean to urinate on your fried potato slices, but are you not just a teeny bit worried that you might be biting off more than you can chew??

All this talk of MX5 "conversions" strikes me as a disaster waiting to happen.

I would suggest that you put this car back together properly and methodically to the best possible standard, by all means have a crack at getting a bit more urge through stuff like exhausts and carbs, but lay off the heavy engineering for a bit.

I would say that if you progress much further down this road there is a 98% certainty that this old Rebel won't ever see the road again.

No need to worry Pog, if i require it i can get help from a number of talented people.

Totally understand what your saying, and trust me i have done my homework.

I have emailed people who own MX5's, GJR for advice and even measured up an MX5 the other day.

I have two small notepads full of things i have looked at, measured or worked out. (Obviously one notepad for the Rebel and the other for MX5)

I have pretty much covered everything, and i'm still considering standard or modified. (Even ask Patrick )

As for your theory:

"I would say that if you progress much further down this road there is a 98% certainty that this old Rebel won't ever see the road again."

I disagree, as any modifications i do to the car, can be easily removed.

I know it's alot more work than welding in afew panels on a Mk1 Fiesta, but i would like to say i pretty much know what i'm doing.

This is not going to be an overnight project, infact i plan from start to finish it taking about 2 years.

Any more questions ?

P.s

Thanks for looking at my thread :)

I have also been scribbling down more things into my notepad(s).

Feel free to ask questions :)

Yep that is a Suzuki G13B, 1.3 DOHC.

Producing roughly 100BHP as standard, +15 / 20 Bhp more with the bike carbs, not bad 'ey ?

More pictures shall be taken soon :D

Thanks John, i have some rather "different" ideas for the rest of it , so when it is all finished it's going to be very different

 Just my luck :D

Nope, as it was good to stretch the Audi's "legs" , and meet the great guy whole sold me everything.

 I predict a fairly lively little car in the making here, bearing in mind that the Rebel Racing series uses Reliant's own 850 engines, factory-sealed and restricted to 55bhp, yet still fast enough to be a bit wild in the wet.

The diff's going to be the limiting factor here as I see it, with 14mph per 1000rpm in straight 4th, you'll end up with something that does 0-62 in a shade under the time it takes to fasten the seat belts, but still runs out of steam at around 98mph.

Regals now, they have a much higher diff that's just as strong but would give you 18mph per 1000, and yes, it goes in the Rebel's casing.

Chainsaw available here if needed to "extract" suitable parts.:wink:

That's probably the best engine to put in there, they're light and I think it'll suit the whole character of the car. You won't need to cut any of the frame or body as well (hopefully).

I'll be finished with my engine crane in a couple of days, and you're welcome to use it. I have nowhere to store it so you'd be doing me a favour.

Thanks Dave that will help ALOT !

GJR -

The gearboxes that i have are SJ gearboxes and i think they are 5 speed, all i need to do now is find a small and reliable axle and it is pretty much all systems go. ... do you think Regal would be a good way to go ?

As i was thinking more along the 105E , Capri or Mk2 Escort route.

Posted

Regal diff in the Rebel casing should be capable of taking up to around 140Lb/ft of torque without severe distress, as would the stock Rebel diff, but it's too bloody low-geared.

I think I'm correct in stating that 5th in that Suzuki 'box is >1:1, so that, with a Regal diff in the Rebel axle, would make for something plenty lively yet still much more relaxing than a stock Rebel to drive.

I know of a modified Sooty van that has an Essex V6 fitted and after it broke a couple of stock diffs, the guy fitted a complete Reliant Robin axle to it, it was still fine last I heard, and they're not as strong as the axle that came with the Rebel, so I'd say go for it. You can always swap it out later if it does go into self-destruct mode. :D

I was actually going to use the Rebel Axle / Diff to see if everything worked correctly, and then if it broke resort to the "Notepad of knowledge" and replace the Axle / Diff.

Just brakes i need to sort now .... and radiator, alternator ..... yep there is ALOT more to do :D

Well done.

If I had the big thumbs up emoticon it would be displayed next to the well done.

I assume these things don't all the electronics if running on carbs ( I was advised to take the complete loom out of the Swift...).

Thanks Tayne, your words help the motivation.

Yeah there is no need for an ECU and that malarkie, all i need to do is make a short wiring loom for the alternator and sensors (Such as water Temp sensor and so on) - Easy peasy :D

May I be the first to suggest a bank of four motorcycle carbs?

Thanks Pete, much appreciated.

I will no doubt call upon your skills to help me get everything lined up on the chassis.... No time soon though
