I'm guessing the anti stall kicked in or something.

Hang on. These are cars being used by learners all over the country. Anti Stall! WTFBBQ! No need to learn how to use a clutch then.

I dont understand when they say ''I left it in gear just to be on the safe side'' (because the handbrake was only half-on)

Sadly most people who own 500's (myself excluded of course :P ) don't have the foggiest about how a car works, they just bought it because it was pretty.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a166 2.0 with a leaking slave cylnder and managed to drive it to the garage by leaving it in first gear while starting...but I was in the driving seat and knew what would happen!!This is even worse than "I was driving my Toyota when the accelerator jammed causing me to crash" - never thought to slip the gearbox into neutral then....

I'm guessing the anti stall kicked in or something. I can drive my car into the garage without my feet on the pedals because of it!

What a bellend!

I wish my Charmant had "anti-stall", then I wouldn't have to keep blipping the throttle when I come off the motorway.

That makes sense when the engine isn't running... It's the starting the bloody thing in gear that caused the problem (but I think pretty much everyone has done that at some point). If he'd got into the car to start it, this probably wouldn't have happened, but reading his post, I suspect he would be trundling down the road, on tick-over in first, waiting for Fiat to send him an e-mail explaining why his car was about to hit the wall before he realised anything was wrong.I'm beginning to think that a basic intelligence test should be part of the UK driving one. In Czech before you get your driving licence you have to be able to change fuses, change wheels, check and top up levels, and know the basics about keeping a car working. Here it seems that if anything isn't perfect you just sue the manufacturer for your own stupidity.

I call wind up, the lass seems to be too dim to be true.

I'd love to agree with you but there are some weapons grade dimwits on that forum who've bought 500's

I don't get what the fuss is about. The person readily admits to doing something stupid, but is merely wondering if the car should normally have stalled, thus preventing the drive-off.

I think there's a lot of sense in that. A person who at least knows how the basics of their car like brakes, handbrake, steering, suspension and tyres is a far safer driver. When I was a teenager my dad got me to do things like pads, filters, oil and spark plugs on our cars and explained how they all worked. It's made me a far safer driver! Oh and when the throttle stuck on my 504 I was able to stop safely and get out and fix it as well!

Wow, this must be spreading fast, 15 non members were viewing the thread. Anyway, What a complete bozo!

My mates dad was telling me once how years ago one of the managers who work at the docks i do was fast asleep in his car on the quay so my mates dad thought it would be funny to knock his his car with a forklift. Sadly the manager had left the ignition on whilst listening to the radio as well as being in gear and the car bump started and crashed into a stack of containers. He wasn't very happy by all accounts.

Am I right in thinking this was an Issue in the states (due to lack of manual's) that its standard speck to have to press the clutch pedal down before the starter will work, simple obvious answer to a problem caused by fools.IN fact I always start my car now with the pedal pressed down. maybe I am just a fool LOL

You'd better not let Mrs_Liberator hear you saying that.

The 500 section of the Fiat Forum is something of a hotbed of bellendery, just shows what a car forum populated by mainly non-car people is like. A more comprehensive driving test involving some awareness of how cars actually work would be a great idea.

Mrs 504GL also chose the 500 over a Panda because it's pretty, but Mrs 504GL is able to do an oil and filter change with no problems and isn't silly enough to start her car whilst it's in gear and whilst she's not in it! As I'm sure Mrs _Liberator is too ;) Are you an FF member?

What they need is a proper 500

Oh please no!

You'd have threads like

"I tried to brake from 50mph and the car is still going"

"My car is very noise when I put the throttle down and the gearbox is a bit crunchy"

etc etc :D

There are some people on there who really know their stuff to be fair but they're greatly outnumbered by the clueless and feckless people :(

Oh and BTW I have a nicely restored 500f promised to me by my dad when he shuffles off this mortal coil. Strangely enough I'm not that keen on it though my wife loves the idea. Idea of the car that is, not my dad kicking the bucket!

unfortunatley its the whole fiat forum that suffers from that, not just the 500 section.
