Selling cars advice

Quick question, My mate sold his old Vauxhall Vectra last week on gumtree for £200 with a sold as seen receipt, a few days latter it turns up on gumtree again for £525 with some lame story about how he's selling it for a 7 seater. (He's a trader who sells cars on bullshit).

(This is the link, He's re-advertised it on there for £375 this morning)

http://ipswich.gumtree.com/ipswich/95/53990595.html

This morning my mate gets a phone call from him telling him that the manifold is knackered and he wants the money for a new one or his £200 back and the car and that he'll be back at his house at 5pm tonight to get his money!.

My mate is now panicking as he doesn't know what to do, He's rang the police who said it's a civil case and can only intervene if it gets out of hand and want to know if he has any rights.

I told him to tell him to fuck off as he has no rights.

Your mate needs to tell this no-dick chancer to fuck right off. Tell him to have some mates ready at his house in case the sword swallower actually turns up for his money.

Posted

Simply tell him to get bent. Sold as seen, no warranty given or implied and the guy has accepted it on that basis. Also make it clear that turning up on the doorstep demanding money will be treated as a criminal matter, regardless of how nicey nicey he acts, or puts pressure on. Also make clear that IF he still thinks he's entitled to this £200 to instruct a solicitor and do it by the letter, as a solicitor will tell him to get bent and/or charge more than the £200 he's quibbling over. Make sure that trading standards are informed if he is a dealer deliberately misleading the public too, just to stick it to the bastard.

That's pretty much what i said, His old chap and his neighbour who's some mad scouser is going round.I can't believe that someone would behave like that though, He sold the car cheap as it had a few problems which he told the bloke who said it wasn't a problem as he was a trader anyway then decides a week later after no being able to sell it to try a fast one.

Posted

Cheers Pog, he's on my facebook chat at the moment and pasted that reply to him as that's what i think. He's complaining as my mate done the head gasket a few months back which he told him and now it's leaking, He said is leaking due to the head bolts not being re-tightened and claims that you're supposed to re-tighten after 1000 miles after you first put them in, Is that true?.Even so he still has no rights.

Posted

The guy sounds like he is 100% chancer, he needs to be politely but firmly told to FOAD. Ah, the joys of selling old snotters... this unfortunately is part of the game i'm afraid. Its just a case of standing your ground as the guy hasnt got a leg to stand on, and he will defo know it, he's just trying his luck. The wanker. At least try and get his address etc so you can sign him up for a years supply of free Supa Tenalady samples or whatever. As for the head bolts, tell him you tightened them to the max with a big red Fisher-Price plastic spanner with a smiley face on it, its nowt to do with him anyway.

Two bob dickhead that should really go and fornicate himself. Be polite and tell him there is no warranty, there are no comebacks and that if he is unhappy he should have inspected the car properly in the first place. He is supposed to be a trader after all.My guess is he's off-loaded it to someone, hidden or lied about the faults and it's come back on him and now he's trying to blame your pal.If (as I strongly believe) it's an Ecotec version then pretty much all of them sound raspy from the manifold when cold, not that that really matters as such because the daft twat has bought it now anyway.Incidentally 'sold as seen' is NOT recognised these days, did your mate describe the known faults on the advert or just suggest it needed work and have you got the link to your mate's advert?

Posted

The advert was also on Gumtree but he deleted it after it sold, It was up for £500 but he explained the faults to the cock jockey when he came to view it hence it only being £200 and sold as seen.

Posted

If he does come round, ask him to put his complaint in writing, so that you can forward ia copy to your solicitor, and a copy to Trading Standards, who will then contact him. Once the magic words solictor /Trading Standards is mentioned chancers usually melt quietly away.............

Posted

Do you happen to know what he put exactly on the receipt when this wankshaft bought the car?I can't see this coming to much but it might sway in the wankers favour if no mention of faults were put on the advert or the receipt.Hopefully 'sold as seen' might cover his arse a little but a list of faults or something like 'sold with faults as decribed' would be ideal.Having said all that if this cockwand is a trader he's pretty much fucked and even if it ever came to the County Court then it's all based on the money he paid for the car.Trying to claim for the price of a new manifold/fitting on a two hundred quid car should be quite funny, it'll be a token effort job at best.I really do believe this bell end is just trying it on though and your mate should just stand his gorund and fuck him off.

That one on PC forum is laughable, i hope you didnt lose too much sleep over it.You can tell when someone is genuinely feeling like they have some redress about a percieved bum deal, because the first thing theyll do is ring you up, put their case to you and see what you have to say about it. What they will NOT do is start rushing round getting quotes and statements from Honda dealers, genning themselves up at the CAB (which always have mega long waiting lists anyway, you never get an appointment with one within a couple of days) and preparing a massive defence like that guy claims to have done. I bet he's got a standard form which he fills out whenever he buys a car, which is probably reasonably often, and sends it off just to see what happens. Like those fuggin mobile phone twats who ring you up at home, if you do 100 cold calls and get one sale, it was worth doing. As for 'a carbon copy of this message has been sent to the CAB', dont make me laugh, theyre not youre fuggin solicitor mate. The bit about pregnant wife and kids adds plenty of negative credibility as well.Overall i would rate that message approx 2% more credible than a typical 419 Nigerian Prince Buster effort, so about 2.5% credible all told. Do you have their phone number? I think you should ring them up and ask what happened to their legal onslaught. Tell em you spent your life savings on top Noo Yoik Attorney 'Mike Strutter' to defend yourself, and the money was wasted so now youre claiming it back off 'em anyway. Ask for something like £375,000.

I had a similar problem a few months ago.

Read this: http://www.practicalclassics.co.uk/foru ... a21e03b679

I've heard nothing since November 2009.

Fucking LOL at '...We took the car to the honda dealer and they have confirmed that it has been a preexisting condition before we bought the car and the previous owner should have known this and they are willing to give this verification to us in writing.'

What a load of absolute bollocks. No fucking wonder you didn't hear back from 'OMG the dealer said it's safe if it's warmed up but I'm not going to do that because I'm a fucking skip rat and I borrowed eleventy cajillion quid from a loan shark for this car and because my last car was a Ford Orion with no tax and MOT which I drove round with no brakes for 6 months before crashing it into the Post Office wall whilst cashing my sickness benefit cheque in this is a brand new car to me. I am terminally stupid and have seven kids by nineteen different blokes' WANKER.

reading that story on practical classics makes me think that the best way to deal with this type of scammer is to totally ignore them.

maybe if Peter had replied back saying

If you email me again I will not read it.

If you write to me I will not read it

If you call me I will not speak to

Goodbye

and then done exactly that

he was trying to be reasonable but you can't be reasonable with a scammer or a total idiot (they were one or the other)

by the same principle maybe your mate should just go out and not be there at 5pm

be in a neighbours house with a video camera and if they do any damage give the tape to the Police, because it would be criminal damage

but then what do I know?

this might be applicable

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harassment_(UK)

Protection from Harassment Act 1997

This Act was primarily created to provide protection against stalkers, but it has been used in other ways.

Under this Act, it is now an offence for a person to pursue a course of action which amounts to harassment of another individual, and that they know or ought to know amounts to harassment. Under this act the definition of harassment is behaviour which causes alarm or distress. This Act provides for a jail sentence of up to six months or a fine. There are also a variety of civil remedies that can be used including awarding of damages, and restraining orders backed by the power of arrest.

If someone came to my door demanding money I think that I would tell them that I find their behaviour alarming and distressing and consider it harrassment, and that if they do it again I would call the police. Also if they refuse to leave your property then that is immediate grounds for calling the police under traspass laws I should think.

About 15 years ago I had a Diesel Cavalier, the crank rumbled when it was warm.I phoned one of those "we buy any car" type adverts in the local paper.Asked for about half what the car would have been worth and the chap came round.I made sure the engine was stone cold but he still chipped 100 quid.Drove it onto his transporter and away he went.Next day he comes back moaning about the car.I was polite but firm and told him I didn't own a Cavalier,he did.His car his problem.Maybe it was wrong to sell it like that but hey,I needed the money and he got a car that if it was any good was worth a grand. He paid 400 quid so sod him.Never heard anything else from him

I sold an absolutely immaculate Volvo 760 GLE saloon to a bloke about eight or nine years ago. Properly mint it was, I'd used it as my car for about 6 months and the chap I bought it off is someone I'd trust with my life. We'd both looked after the 760 as it was stunningly clean, and it hadn't done many miles, 85k or thereabout.I was visiting a friends garage when an oldish chap turns up spends 15 minutes walking around the 760 (which wasn't advertised for sale) before strolling in and demanding to know who the 760 belonged to. I told him that it was mine and enquired why he was asking. Old bloke tells me that he's been after one in that colour for years and has never seen one so nice, asks me if I want to sell - which naturally I do, provided the money is right.Old bloke arranges to meet me a day or two later at the same place and for a full RAC or AA inspection on the car. Car gets inspected and mechanic can't find a single fault with it. Nothing. As I say, this thing was perfect. Old bloke eventually waves £1500 at me which I accept and he goes his merry way. Happy as a pig in shit.Months later, old bloke rings up; "This piece of shit you sold me has popped its head gasket, I demand you do something about it. I've had to pay £900 to get it done, and I want you to reimburse me for every penny". He tried every trick in the book to get me to give him money, from "My son is in the Police force" to "My wife is dying, and this bill might just finish her off" via "I thought you were a decent chap, a decent chap would pay the bill".Eventually I told him to fuck off. He did. The Volvo was still going strong two or three years ago.

Sorry Bo1 forgot to update this!, My mate wasn't at work last night but i texted him and he said the bloke never turned up so he was obviously trying his luck. The car's on gumtree again today with another £50 off and a slightly different write up... http://ipswich.gumtree.com/ipswich/55/54045255.html

It does Need a new exhaust gasket about a £1.I will not spend any more money on it so grab yourself a bargain.

Yeah right, So if it's only a £1 then why aren't you doing it... Cock.

Is that the guys actual phone number on there? Not one of these privacy service things. If so it would be satisfying to sign him up for a few 'call me back' jobs with mobile phone companies and other tireless parasites. And/or make a few appointments to go and see it, then dont turn up.

other tireless parasites.

Assorted god outfits. Their persistence knows no bounds.

SEO type companies are incredibly irritating & persistant. Not that this has any relevance to the discussion here, of course.

yep that's his number alright, just google it ...

Love the way when you google his mobile it brings up all these different ads saying "Must sell ugrading car" or "New car arriving soon". Plankton.

I might be tempted to scribble his number on a few truck stop toilet walls under the heading "Nine inch tv cock fun"He is clearly a prick who hasn't yet learned the value of getting a £2 disposable sim card for every car he sells!
