Holes vs MOT

The MX5 that's been sat since March 2020 has been the subject of my "Barn find". And needs to be back in the road before the summer.

Pumped up the tyres and it started first time (new battery this time last year).  Drove up and down the drive. And up to the end of the cul de sac and back.

And it will need some attention to the brakes.  They work, but not too well.

Can't see any holes underneath, but it could do with a thick layer of underseal.

The thing that's concerned me since we got the car in 2009 is the gradual deteriation of the front wings. In particular the drivers side. I have 2 second hand wings that need more paint. I started doing them in a dark green which probably won't match.

Anyway.  I have a question for the MOT testers.  Do you think I could get away with putting some gaffer tape over it, the logic being that I want to see what else it fails on.

Best of my knowledge bud, as long as its not structural or within a certain distance that it'd compromise structural rigidity, then tape is fine. The rules are to protect pedestrians and so on from sharp edges

That's what I thought.

The other question. How do I get it to the MOT station. Buy insurance on line and cancel within 14 days ?

Insurance?

OnLine  you could try "dayinsure" via a cashback site (like topcashback). Here's their T+Cs which don't seem to exclude "going for MOT".

Probably best. Most main stream insurers, even though you've got a 14 day cooling off period, will charge a service fee to cancel. Day insurance may be cheaper.

Extravagant wanker! 🤣

If it’s prepared properly a GRP job will last years. I’ve known sills welded on at a body shop last 5-6 years and start rotting out again.

True enough. Make it usable

Expanding foam and bastard file. Fixed.

With the day's newspaper of your choice behind it.  Then you know EXACTLY when the repair* was done!

You should send that to Viz top tips.

Probably need another couple of coats before it looks dark enough. It's obviously not going to be an exact match, but I'm thinking that once it's back on the road I can take it to my parents double garage and do a blow over with my old compressor.
