I always fancied an old shape Disco on 750 tyres and steel wheels like the old Camel Toephy Trophy ones had. I like narrow tyres for traction, especially in clay, which is usually all wet and slimey on the surface but is usually drier and grippier underneath.

Ah yes, my tame mechanic mate goes there and I've been along for the crack. 

He had a rough old vitara for a while which went everywhere the discos went but not the series. 

Can't remember what killed that but he started using his very shiny Hi lux. If you ever saw back to the future, it looked like Martys Hi lux at the end but in Subaru blue. 

That went surprisingly well through the rough with little regard for the paintwork. Until he tried wading at the only speed he knows and hydraulicked the engine and bent a rod. 

We towed it to the main road and called the AA who weren't daft, took one look at the state of the truck and said "Don't think so lads, good luck BYE!"

Now my mate had his own recovery truck but it was 60 miles away and we eventually got home after another mate managed to get the keys and rescue us. 

Post covid, he bombs around lanes locally in a petrol Shogun which is so far unstoppable. 

 

Anyway, back to dissolving discoveries....

Winch is off.

Winch got fixed, replaced that clip and rebuilt it a few times and got it working. Hoping to test it out tomorrow. 
 

MOT happened yesterday. It failed. Welding on the near side rear wheel arch. Typical.

More discovery abuse carried out today, along with my mate in his dishatsu. Not many pictures taken as too busy driving. Winch still broken, going to buy a new one.

265 75 16 insa turbo special traks with a 2inch suspension lift, that’s all. Anti roll bars both removed for extra articulation, makes all the difference along with removing the tow bar that used to act like a plough. I’ve used Goodrich style braided brake hoses (longer) and poly bump stops, but shortened the bump stops by 50% so they don’t take the piss. Really need cranked trailing arms on the rear now as too much articulation causes the trailing arm bushes to pop out.

Thanks,exact same tyre/lift combo I have.Rears at the limit of tread tho so I was thinking of going to 70 section all round because they've been catching the rear of the back arches.Don't really want to start cutting metal.ARB's have been removed already it seems.

Yes my arches have been cut slightly and extensions fitted. 
 

ive got a set of these if you fancy them, same 265 75 16 but the tread isn’t as aggressive. These tyres were on this when I bought it but later fitted them to alloys as spares.

Special tracks are the best for pure mud 4x4 traction. But horrible for anything else. The others are more like mud terrain but ok for on road. Depends on how stuck you want to be!

This is Silverdale pay and play. It’s every 3rd Sunday of the month and is not far from Newcastle under Lyme. I can get better location if you fancy a go. Need at least a 2 inch lift and decent tyres, but some motors are standard and limited to where they can go. The dishatsu has welded diffs so permanent 4wd but struggled with ground clearance

After the winchmax 13500 lbs winch broke pulling a dihatsu fourtrak sideways from a tree, I have in and bought this Warn xd9000 from a guy I know. They retail for about £1500 if you can find one. Bought for £500. Brand new but has been sat around for a while. 

ideally need to get a cover. But the design of the bumper makes it hard to get a cover on. Struggled with the cover for the winchmax so never bothered. 

 

had to modify the grill with a grinder. No problem. 
 

 

this is only a 9000lb winch, but that’s around 4.4 ton, which is more than enough. And the back up care for Warn winches is much better. See how we get on!

More work started on this shed today. Front wheel bearings. Don’t think I’ve ever done them on this one. But I can’t remember. They got advised on MOT and I’ve had a crunchy grindy feel from the front axle somewhere so they’re getting done. While I’m here, the swivel grease is getting changed. 

 

 

im surprised the fill and drain plugs came out. They were very rusty. I’ve left it draining until tomorrow, that stuff is horrible. It’s supposed to be oil but you can get a shot of grease to go in instead.

The orthodoxy is that if you like mudplugging grease is worse than oil but rational discussion of the subject is like getting a settlement between the Hatfields and the McCoys.

When the holes you drop into are a little deeper than expected. Once you loose traction, it’s game over, and when you’re beached on something you need a tug free. It’s all good fun!

the one shot grease is pretty easy to squeeze in! 
 

and then build up the bearing. Now, where did I put the hub nut tool? It’s in here somewhere!

Wheel bearing and swivel job this side now complete. Better fit this poly bump stop ive had for about 8 years. 
 

 

excellent. And found a hole in the inner wing, fucker. I hate this Landrover. Where’s the welder? At home? Ok, I’ve had enough for today.

Finally finished this patch. It literally is  just a patch. Seam sealed then stone chipped. It’ll need doing again in a couple of years if I still have this body on it. 
 

 

now I can start replacing the drivers side wheel bearing. Left swivel draining until I next get chance to go up.

Find one without sunroofs. This one has two. But also, the previous owner used to off-road it, then jet wash it, then wax oil it pretty much straight away. So all the mud and moisture was locked in. It’s been a mess for a long time. But if I ever find a cheap 3 door non sunroof I’ll be very tempted to buy it.

Yet more work done on this today. I’ve had a feeeling that the alternator has been on its way out for some time. Idle speed indicates sub 500rpm and the battery isn’t brilliant. But with a winch onboard I need a decent output on the alternator anyway. So it’s having a 120amp up it. It’s in there somewhere. Takes about 10 mins to remove. 
 

it’s a second hand alt, but the pulley is wrong so swapped the pulleys over. Larger one is the 300tdi pulley. 

 

Fitted. But still indicates sub 500 rpm at idle. These idle at 750rpm so not sure what’s going on there. I replaced the connector for the Rev counter on the back of the alternator as it was corroded and some strands of wire were broken but it hasn’t made any difference. So not sure on that one. Charge rate is 14.6v so I know it’s charging ok. 
 

Also replaced offside front driveshaft/Cv with one from a spare axle I had a stiff spot turning the wheel. Was an odd one to fathom as I’d already replaced the wheel bearing so it wasn’t that. With both front wheels off the ground I spun the front propshaft and the offside wheel stopped, so the diff was ok. Didn’t take any pictures because it was a greasy job but after road test it was all good! So I’m happy with that.

The discos first show in a fair few years. LR show at gaydon this weekend. 90 miles and can’t go over 60 mph as it’s still over heating above that. Nice day for it!

I hunted out my spare radiator as driving over 60 causes it to get a tad spicy. It’s buggered, half the fins fell out. But no wonder it overheats….
