2006 Toyota Land Cruiser - GONE!

I didn't know where to put this but thought there may be LC lickers on this thread.

Today I was driving towards Shenington (near Banbury) and followed what I think was an 80s Land Cruiser.

Slightly unusual maybe, but not that interesting... Except it looked new. I mean brand new.  Totally immaculate, including the underside.

The body style was one of those 'short' pickups, possibly with a 4-seater cab (I couldn't tell). It was on trade plates.

Had a V6 badge on the back, couldn't smell clag so presumably pez.

What's going on? Has Toyota started making these again a la Jaguar E-type?

Bonus spot - an R5 turbo as in the mid engined rally car, in Renault works livery (yellow/white). Mega.

No photos, obviously. But this Wikipedia pic is very similar although the one I saw had slightly flared rear arches.

They did do an anniversary version.

And what I have found out since selling this thing is that the Prado (which what mine is/was) is like a “lite” version. It’s not a full fat Land Cruiser.

Those are the Amazon types, the 100 series etc. so there is still scope for a future dalliance with one.

Yes, as a way of comparing a 70 series is an outback goat farmer who castrates goats with his teeth and enjoys a good fist fight. A Prado is his townie cousin who enjoys ballet dazing, poetry and crying for no reason.

I mean I do enjoy a bit of poetry but how did you know about the crying?!

Interesting!

What markets are Toyota making these for then? Africa?

Almost certainly what you say, because I forgot until I looked at the RHSA website that the car I saw had a snorkel.

I'm with you actually, if you need a dependable off-roader without unnecessary glitz, I can't think of anything better.

Not imported to the UK - the few that are - are individually done with an IVA.

They sell all over the rest of the world where any smog control is less stringent.

They are for sale retail in Morocco for example - I think they are mid £30,000 upwards.

The older 60's are still available- various companies restore them too. Anything upwards of £80,000 for good as new.

You can still buy them new in Australia, so I reckon that's where the RHD ones are coming from. Not sure if they're even available in Japan!

Anywhere near these guys?

These have had IVA's done. Not sure how they are getting them through - they must be retro-fitting emissions gear.

The ones selling in Australia now are full modern engines with dpf and everything. If the old 6-cylinder non turbo diesel is still being made, it's probably mostly for Africa.

I don't think they meet Euro 6 or possibly other legislation - regarding safety.

I don't know, but it's possible they don't.

Think this will possibly be the penultimate post on this car from me. I put a video together explaining in brief terms what 3 1/2 years of ownership of the Land Cruiser was and introducing the Subaru.

I am going to distill my thoughts about it and relate it to the wider bullshido of Toyota and the myth that surrounds them in terms of reliability. And the fucking parts costs.

Japanese,M8,run forever they do!The Taliban use them you know,And the UN......... Seriously,on these pages as much as anywhere, there seems to be an almost religious belief that certain vehicles will last at least forever (and ever, amen!).Whilst others are the root of all evil and will definitely cause death and destruction to their owners. In reality, you probably didn't do to badly.Would guess the previous owner knew when to cash his chips in,same as you did.Are we expecting too much from vehicles that have lasted several times their design life?Did actually see one similar on the road today for the first time in ages.

I had a reminder yesterday that the MOT was due on this Land Cruiser. So like all ex-partners, I decided to go online and see how it's been getting on away from me.

So the brake light didn't get fixed until it got to the MOT. But still on the face of it not a bad return.

But the advisories sound like it's going to need a ball of money throwing at it. New tyres, brakes, and corrosion has made enough of an appearance to be written down. Plus it sounds like it's a working vehicle now given the rear seats have been removed. I don't think it's particularly easy to do that, so it's having a hard life. Good. Fucker deserves it.

I mean sure, the Subaru eats key fob batteries for breakfast, but I did a good thing I feel and have no regrets about moving it on.
